Coughlin Speaks at NFL Combine

by John Fennelly on February 24th, 2012 at 3:33 pm

Giants’ head coach Tom Coughlin addressed the media today at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis.

“I feel like I was just here….I was,” the coach said.

He, of course, was referring to his team’s victory there three weeks ago in Super Bowl XLVI. Today’s presser had a different tone as the context has changed from the Super Bowl to the NFL Combine.

Every coach, GM and scout are in Indy (as they are every winter) to see the newest crop of NFL eligibles coming out of the college ranks. Mostly, this week is all about supposition for some teams and a sense of rekindled hope for others.

For the Giants, who draft dead last this season, it’s about finding some diamonds in the rough (and a tight end).

Coughlin had little to say about what the Giants would be looking for – or at – this week in Indianapolis. He did, however, have some revelations regarding the health of some players.

Coughlin’s Coaching Tree Expands With Departure of Sullivan

by John Fennelly on February 17th, 2012 at 9:57 am

Giants’ QB coach Mike Sullivan was hired last week by the Tampa Bay Buccaneers to be their offensive coordinator. New head coach Greg Schiano could not have made a better selection.

Tom Coughlin has endured in this league and his methods are now being recognized. Sullivan is part of that coaching tree, having served under Coughlin in both Jacksonville and New York, winning two Super Bowls along the way.

Sullivan, a former Army Ranger, know the value of a team concepts and hard work. He also understands loyalty. His defection to Tampa from TIMEX is a promotion for him, one the Giants can be proud of.

“I’m extremely grateful and will forever remember the fact that Coach Coughlin was the one who gave me an opportunity at Jacksonville,” Sullivan told Steven F. Holder of the Tampa Bay Times. “He gave me a chance to come up to New York and coach receivers. He gave me a chance to coach the quarterbacks….I’m forever going to be in debt to him and Jerry Reese for allowing me to pursue this incredible opportunity.”

SNY Giants Parade Coverage: Tom Coughlin Speech

by John Fennelly on February 7th, 2012 at 2:15 pm

Tom Coughlin – Head Coach, New York Giants

“Thank you. Thank you very much. It’s wonderful to be a part of this great day. Only – only – could this happen in New York.”

“Only in New York. That’s why it’s so important and so wonderful to be and to have the opportunity to be the head coach of the New York Giants and play for the New York Giants because this is the greatest city in the world and it’s wonderful that we’ve returned the Lombardi Trophy to exactly where it belongs – right here in New York.”

“Mayor Bloomberg mentioned the word “finish“. The other themes that we talked about as we got going down the stretch was keep ‘keep the dream alive’. Keep the dream alive. This is part of the dream. We have a number of players that have never experienced this and they’ll never, ever forget this for the rest of their lives.”

“Thank you for coming out and making us feel so welcome.”

“I has the honor of speaking to President Obama as we traveled over here this morning. He was very gracious. He praised our football team. He praised our mental toughness, out resiliency, our leadership, the great ability that this team possessed to finish to win so many games in the fourth quarter.”

“But the key thing is to remember this: that all things are possible for those who believe. And we always believed, we always knew we could get here. We had to put it together and it’s a great, great credit to the coaches who did a magnificent job and to our players.”

“Thank you. “

Coughlin, Giants Strive for Normalcy Among SB Chaos

by John Fennelly on February 3rd, 2012 at 2:02 pm

Tom Coughlin addressed the media this morning in what seemed to be an exercise in overkill. He stressed again the team’s intentions to keep things as normal as possible. To avoid an unnecessary disruption, he said the team would not switch hotels the day before the game as teams traditionally do at the Super Bowl.

“Good morning. We have had an outstanding week here in Indianapolis. The hospitality has been very, very good. Our practice facility has been outstanding. Our players have been excited about getting from the meeting rooms to the practice field. We’re looking forward to today – going through our normal Friday practice and going through our Saturday routine on into game day. The excitement has built up through the course of the week. We certainly are looking forward to Super Bowl XLVI. It was great to see Coach (Don) Shula here this morning. I made reference, yesterday, when I talked with Peter King. I was like, ‘How in the world did Coach Shula win 328 games?’ It’s incredible to even think about that. It was great to see him here. I talked to Mary Ann (Shula) and had the opportunity to say hello to (Don Shula), as we prepare for the Super Bowl.”

Coughlin Hopes Indy is Behind Giants, Eli

by John Fennelly on January 31st, 2012 at 7:35 am

From Phil Perry of CSNNE….

Tom Coughlin is happy Super Bowl XLVI is in Colts country, and not just because the weather has been unseasonably warm.

Judging by his opening comments in his Monday media availability period, Coughlin is hoping the Colts rivalry with the Patriots will mean more local fans cheering on the Giants in Lucas Oil Stadium at the end of the week.

“I would think that the Indianapolis fans would now become Giants fans and support the Giants as well,” Coughlin said.

While Coughlin would be fine if he didn’t see a single Flying Elvis in the crowd on Sunday, he did take time Monday to praise old friend Patriots coach Bill Belichick.

Tom Coughlin Monday Presser Highlights

by John Fennelly on January 30th, 2012 at 9:02 pm

Yes, the Giants are in Indianapolis.  An incredibly warm January is coming to an end all across the country and will continue into February. Mild temperatures will make for a memorable Super Bowl week.  Tom Coughlin was in a pleasant mood and alluded to the unseasonable surroundings…apparently, the Giants did not check the Weather Channel.

“Good afternoon. To the very nice people of Indianapolis that welcomed us, we say, ‘Hello from the New York Giants and thank you for the beautiful weather.’” opened Coughlin. “We all packed as if we were coming into snow country, but obviously we didn’t do a very good of anticipating.”

On why the Giants waited until Monday to arrive in Indy…..“First of all, this is the path that we followed four years ago.  I thought it was a very good one and it came from research that I had done prior to setting the exact schedule. I felt that our players, because of arriving here when we do and because of media day tomorrow, have plenty of time to be accumulated to the hotel, to the setting, to the meeting rooms. You see these guys walking around now trying to find their way around. That’ll all be taken care of when we go to work on Wednesday. I just felt like this whole process was very good, and the way in which our schedule was established. I thought it was very good for us the last time we did it. We tinkered with it a little bit here and there, with the circumstances that we have been dealt with meeting rooms and that type of thing, but for the most part, the schedule remains the same. The flight started out like a day in which we were making a normal travel to a game, and you kind of have to catch yourself realizing you have a lot of work to do throughout the course of the week.  I think the players were excited. When we got on the plane, it was the video cameras and all of that stuff. They’re excited about it.”

On Bill Belichick……..“I certainly do admire him, and he’s done an outstanding job. He’s an exceptional football coach, and I’ve said that before. The style and the preparation…Bill is going to work very hard, as we are, at showing you something and it really isn’t what you think it is. You really have to add an element of that into how you prepare. He’s always been an exceptional defensive coach trained by the best, by Parcells. He’s also become an outstanding offensive coach and Tom Brady has helped him to really diversify and get into areas offensively that only lead to the particular strengths of the individuals involved, and he’s done a very good job of that. He’s always been an outstanding special teamer because he was a special teams coach at one time.”

On what he learned from Bill Parcells….“From Parcells, the thing that I admire mostly from Bill Parcells to George Young, Mr. Mara when I had the opportunity to tell him, was the belief in continuity, the stability. There were very few peaks and valleys. There was a feeling of pressure; the finger was always on the coaching staff and how they prepared their team and how the players responded to that. Ultimately, anyone who was around Parcells for any length of time learned how to win. That’s the biggest thing I took away from it.”

On how QB Eli Manning has performed this season and proved he is an elite quarterback… “The best thing that I can say to answer that question is his response when he was asked probably about the hundredth time that he was asked about that whole situation is, ‘Look, I’m trying to be the best quarterback that I can possibly be and to help our team win.’ And I thought, ‘Boom, that’s the answer.’ I congratulated him on his response and I told the whole team about it. I think it’s a good one. He’s never ever been anything less than a top one to me, and that’s all I care about. I certainly felt…I don’t know if I got the entire story on it. What I really heard is this business about him being elite, and he is elite, period.”
