Spagnuolo to Join Saints as Defensive Coordinator

by Jon Wagner on January 20th, 2012 at 5:03 am

Former Giants’ DC Stays Out of Philly, but Ends up With Another NFC Power

One look at this year’s NFC title game matchup demonstrates how the National Football League is anything but predictable.

The defending Super Bowl champion Green Bay Packers, owners of the NFL’s best record (15-1) this season and the NFC’s top seed this year are missing from that game, as are the previous Super Bowl champs, the New Orleans Saints, despite going 13-3 this year.

In the Packers’ place are the fourth-seeded New York Giants, who only five weeks ago, were a mediocre 7-7 and fighting desperately for their playoff lives before upsetting the Packers by 17 points on Green Bay’s home field last Sunday, to continue their second magical playoff run in five seasons after missing the postseason each of the past two years.

Report: Spags Will Be Eagles’ DC

by John Fennelly on December 27th, 2011 at 12:50 pm

Rumors have surfaced that former
Giants’ DC Steve Spagnuolo may be returning to Philadelphia after he is dismissed as head coach of the St. Louis Rams next week.

Spags would assume the DC job currently being occupied by Juan Castillo, who would likely be moved back to the offensive staff.

From CSN Philly

Kevin Acee of the San Diego Union-Tribune reports that Rams owner Stan Kroenke plans to fire head coach Steve Spagnuolo after the season. According to Union-Tribune, it is “all but certain” that Spagnuolo will join Andy Reid’s staff as the Eagles’ defensive coordinator.

Acee writes that Kroenke plans to bring in Chargers’ current GM A.J. Smith, who is likely to be fired by San Diego after another underachieving season. Smith is then expected to hire Jon Gruden as his head coach in St. Louis. Acee’s sources said that Gruden plans to return to coaching in 2012 and ESPN – Gruden’s current employer – is aware of and prepared for the move.

Giants Turn Reunion Into Sloppy Homecoming For Spags

by GFB on September 20th, 2011 at 6:12 am

by Jon Wagner

No one knows better than the New York Giants and St. Louis Rams’ head coach Steve Spagnuolo that it’s entirely possible to start an NFL season 0-2 and still win a league championship.

But, that doesn’t mean anyone wants to start that way if they can help it.

Good thing for the Giants, they knew just the formula to all but guarantee a victory against their old defensive coordinator – a blueprint that included winning the turnover battle and leading in the fourth quarter.

The Giants (1-1) did both of those things during a 28-16 victory in their season home opener at Met Life Stadium on Monday night, extending Rams’ streaks to 39 straight losses when St. Louis commits more turnovers then its opposition and 44 consecutive defeats when the Rams (0-2 for a fifth straight season) trail in the fourth period.

Spagnuolo: Tom an Elite Coach

by John Fennelly on September 15th, 2011 at 2:29 pm

Former Giants defensive coordinator and current St. Louis Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo came to the defense of his former boss this morning on a conference call with reporters.

When asked if he thought Tom Coughlin was on the hot seat, took umbrance.

as per our Giants insider Mike Garafolo of the Star Ledger:

“I’m not even really going to address that. I know this much: Tom Coughlin is one of the premier elite head football coaches in this league ..and anybody that sees it otherwise, I think, is wrong in what they’re seeing. He’s proven it time and time again.”

Spagnuolo, whose Rams are also off to a rough, injury-riddled start, realizes the criticism will always be there when things go wrong.

“We are in this business and we know what it’s all about. Tom accepts it, he understands it…but I have no doubts Coach Coughlin will fight through whatever’s going on right now.”

SI’s Peter King Predicts NY Giants to WIN NFC East

by Craig Santucci on September 1st, 2010 at 3:33 pm

Can you believe it?

Sports Illustrated’s  Peter King has predicted the New York Giants to win the NFC East with a 11 & 4 record.

His reasoning for the prediction…a combination between the “NASCAR” defensive scheme where all four defensive down lineman are pash rushing ends(Tuck, Kiwi, Osi, JPP), Perry Fewell’s ability to call a defense similar to the great Steve Spagnuolo and a healthy Chris Canty.

Yes, Chris Canty.   He believes that if the New York Giants could get production from Chris Canty for 16 games the NY Giants would make a major impact in the NFC and win the division.   He still has the Green Bay Packers going to the Super Bowl; however, Peter is predicting a bounce back year for big blue.

Peter also sited the 2007 New York Giants that were coming off a terible 2006 year at 8 & 8, which was good for 3rd in the division.  Currently, this team is flying belowe the radar.  If they can get healthy there maybe some magic left.

Spag’s Ticket Punched – But To Where?

by John Fennelly on January 3rd, 2009 at 2:34 pm

Its no secret that Giants’ defensive coordinator Steve Spagnoulo‘s time with the club is nearing an end. He is the top candidate for many of the head coaching positions around the league. It appears he will interview for all them before making a decision. It is very likely that he will not be returning as Giants’ DC next season.

The skinny is Spagnuolo ranks 4th among free agent head coaches, meaning Bill Cowher, Mike Shanahan and Mike Holmgren would all be hired ahead of him.

That is, if Cowher and Holmgren are looking, which we believe they are not. That leaves Shanahan as the best candidate, and it is believed that he will take the Jets’ job.

Spags will most likely end up in Denver. We don’t think he’s crazy enough to go to Detroit, St. Louis or Oakland should those latter positions open up. The Broncos are a good fit for Steve. They have a franchise QB in Jay Cutler and a solid organization with a dedicated owner in Pat Bowlen. The piece of the puzzle that needs fixing is the defense, and that is where Spags comes in.
