Odds Are Against Giants Repeating

by John Fennelly on February 8th, 2012 at 12:25 pm

The Giants may come back stronger in 2012, but that does not guarantee they will repeat as Super Bowl champions. The last team to appear in the Super Bowl in consecutive seasons were the 2005 New England Patriots, who won both games.

No NFC team has gone to back-to-back Super Bowls since the 1997-8 Green Bay Packers. The last NFC team to repeat as Super Bowl champions were the 1993-4 Dallas Cowboys.

The Giants’ last two Super Bowl appearances were followed by disappointment. In 2001, the Giants failed to make the playoffs with a 7-9 record. In 2008, they went 12-4 earning the top seed in the NFC Playoffs only to be bounced by the Eagles in a terrible outing in the Divisional round.

The league resets every year. Dynasties are thing of the past. Parity has seeped in to the foundation of the league. The salary cap, free agency, the balanced schedule, the draft and injuries are five determinants that must all align in a team’s favor in order to reach the playoffs to have a shot at the Super Bowl.

by John Fennelly on February 8th, 2012 at 11:43 am

The Giants are on top of the football world right now, but this offseason they will have some tough decisions to make personnel-wise.

WR Mario Manningham is a free agent. RB Brandon Jacobs is still overpaid and has been running his mouth and Osi Umenyiora won’t get the contract extension he’s looking for.

Several other players will be testing the free agent marketplace while some will be looking at pay cuts – or worse.

The Daily News panel discusses which of the Giants free agent players is least likely to return to the team next season.

The Giants did not sleep much Sunday night. How could they? The high from the Super Bowl win kept the adrenaline at peak levels.

Today the team will be received by the City of New York in tickertape parade up the Canyon of Heroes in Lower Manhattan. SNY will be covering it live beginning at 10:45 am.

Yesterday morning, Head coach Tom Coughlin and SB XLVI MVP Eli Manning met the media one more time in Indianapolis.

Coughlin was asked what traits his team possesses that allow them to finish so well….

“Mental toughness, resiliency, resolve,” he stated. “We keep playing, we keep fighting, and we’re highly competitive. We do have great trust in each other, great belief that we can finish, and that if we keep playing one play at a time as hard as we can go that we will find a way to win…”
