The Giants may come back stronger in 2012, but that does not guarantee they will repeat as Super Bowl champions. The last team to appear in the Super Bowl in consecutive seasons were the 2005 New England Patriots, who won both games.
No NFC team has gone to back-to-back Super Bowls since the 1997-8 Green Bay Packers. The last NFC team to repeat as Super Bowl champions were the 1993-4 Dallas Cowboys.
The Giants’ last two Super Bowl appearances were followed by disappointment. In 2001, the Giants failed to make the playoffs with a 7-9 record. In 2008, they went 12-4 earning the top seed in the NFC Playoffs only to be bounced by the Eagles in a terrible outing in the Divisional round.

The salary cap, free agency, the balanced schedule, the draft and injuries are five determinants that must all align in a team’s favor in order to reach the playoffs to have a shot at the Super Bowl.
