Giants Offense Continues to Struggle

by Craig Santucci on October 11th, 2011 at 1:06 am

The NY Giants offensive woes continue.

Before kick off on Sunday the New York Giants ranked #13 in passing offense; however 3rd in the their own division.   The rushing offense gets worse.   The Giants were ranked 24th in the NFL and 3rd in the NFC East.  After Sunday’s loss to Seattle running the ball continues to be a problem.

The tough, durable and productive offensive line that the Giants have had since 2005 has all but disappeared.  Ahmad Bradshaw the featured back in the Giants’ offense has not had a 100 yard rushing game this season and only 1 game over 60 yards.

New acquired center David Baas is hurt with a neck injury that has become day to day and Pro Bowl Guard Chris Snee was sent to the hospital for observations after receiving a concussion during the Giants last drive.  This will certainly cripple the Giants O line as the face a re-surging and emotional Buffalo Bills team.

NY Giants O Line: New Faces but Familiar Names

by Craig Santucci on August 4th, 2011 at 2:38 am

With the NY Giants offensive line in need of some help, big blue signed OT Stacey Andrews.  Yes, the brother of Shawn Andrews who the Giants cut last week.  If you want to find some similarities to the every prospering Philadelphia Eagles and your New York Giants…The Eagles had both brothers in Eagles green at one time in 2009.  That experiment did not work.

Only two quick seasons later…Shawn Andrews the 3x Pro Bowler has been cut by the Giants and Stacey Andrews who had been traded from Philadelphia to Seattle has been let go only to resurface as a New York Giant.

Confused?  Me too.

One would wonder why Shawn Andrews wouldn’t take a pay cut to stay with the Giants.  He is clearly head and shoulders better than his brother and he would have had the opportunity to compete for the starting left tackle job against William Beatty the Giants  2nd round pick in 2009.  The Giants currently have 16 offensive lineman in camp.  Only two players, David Baas(FA from 49er’s) and Jim Cordle from Ohio State are true centers.

The wild card is Adam Koets who can play center and guard but is currently rehabbing an ACL injury; however, will be ready to compete soon.  Koets did an excellent job in 2010 before getting hurt and is quite underrated.

Now that it’s official and David Diehl has been moved to guard(costing him $750,000 if he made 15 starts at left tackle), Andrews becomes the catalyst brought into Giants camp to push the slightly soft, William Beatty and 4th round pick James Brewer.

O-Line Purge Continues

by Dan Orlando on July 26th, 2011 at 6:58 pm

OT/G Shawn Andrews has just confirmed that he will not be returning to the Giants in 2011 as he tweeted:

“Myself and Big Blue could not come to terms on a favorable contract.”

While this move was expected, it was felt that perhaps it could be avoided after the O’Hara and Seubert cuts.

In related news, OL Kevin Boothe has signed a 2-year deal with the NYG. Boothe took a step forward last year, filling in admirably at multiple spots along the O-Line when the injury bug bit. Interesting to note that he got time in at C.

Clayton: Giants May Release Andrews

by Rich Resch on July 21st, 2011 at 1:53 pm

According to John Clayton of ESPN.com, the Giants project to be $11.3 million over the $120 million salary cap, once the new CBA is agreed upon.  This does not include restricted free agent tenders.

Clayton lists his top ten predicted cap casualties, and coming in at number ten is Shawn Andrews.

10. New York Giants G Shawn Andrews: The Giants gambled that Andrews could be a fix for the O-line, but unless he gives back a lot of money, he won’t be a Giant. His cap number is $7.5 million and the Giants are more than $11 million over the cap. Releasing him frees up $7.333 million.

There are a lot of question marks among the offensive line, including Andrews’ health, but losing Andrews would still hurt. He was a huge cog in the line last year, filling in at both tackle and guard when others went down with injuries. Still, $7.5 million is too much to pay a swing-lineman with chronic back ailments.

Jerry Reese is going to have to be awfully crafty this offseason, and possibly have a number of players re-structure deals, or he could lose some key free agents. It’s going to be an interesting offseason…

Pleasant Surprise: #9 Shawn Andrews

by Rich Resch on February 16th, 2011 at 9:59 am

9. Shawn Andrews

When the Giants added Shawn Andrews as offensive line depth, the general consensus was that it was a low risk, high reward signing.  Many were wary that Andrews was something of a headcase with a poor work ethic, but if he ever proved to be a problem, the Giants could have cut him before the season started and been right back where they started.

Andrews made it through pre-season cuts unscathed, and went on to provide the Giants with a valuable sixth lineman and eventually started seven games.  Of course, like much of the Giants’ linemen, Andrews missed some time due to injuries.  But when he was on the field, Giants fans were reminded why he was a three time pro bowler with the Eagles.

Andrews’ versatility came in handy considering the Giants’ injury woes, and his considerable talents made it so that, at worst, the Giants did not miss a beat when he was inserted into the lineup.  He may figure prominently into the Giants’ future plans at offensive guard or tackle, depending on whether or not he can stay healthy.

#10: Osi Umenyiora

Surgery in Cards For Osi, O’Hara

by John Fennelly on January 4th, 2011 at 3:09 pm

Several Giants Lineman Scheduled to Go Under the Knife This Winter

Let’s get caught up with some injury news and happenings before the season gets too far in the rear view mirror, shall we….

The Giants have several players that will be needing off-season surgery. One of them is DE Osi Umenyiora, whose knee and hip kept him from practicing in full all year.

The injuries did not prevent Osi from having a great season. A league-leading 10 forced fumbles and 11.5 sacks was worthy of Pro Bowl consideration, but the nod went to linemate Justin Tuck instead.

Although the team officially listed Osi’ s injury to be a knee every week, it is his hip that will be operated on in the near future. He opted to play through the pain this year rather than have the operation last summer and miss the season.

Injured Giants: Shawn Andrews

by Charles Costello on November 17th, 2010 at 6:47 pm

From the NY Times’ Fifth Down Blog:

Giants offensive lineman Shawn Andrews, who started the past two games at left tackle in place of the injured David Diehl, did not practice on Wednesday because of his own nagging back injury.

Andrews missed all but two games the previous two seasons with the Philadelphia Eagles — including all in 2009 — because of a back injury. The Eagles released him after last season. The Giants (6-3) now face the Eagles (6-3) on Sunday.

The Giants have played with a patchwork offensive line while Diehl and center Shaun O’Hara have been sidelined and neither practiced on Wednesday as well. The backup center Adam Koets is also out with a season-ending knee injury.

Andrews, however, was not yet on the Giants’ official injury list, so his outlook for playing on Sunday is uncertain.

What We Learned From the O-Line Shakeup

by Dan Orlando on November 8th, 2010 at 3:24 am

Yesterday the Giants fielded only 2 offensive linemen in their normal slots. While Kareem McKenzie and Chris Snee stayed put on the right, the left saw Rich Seubert at C, David Diehl at LG, and Shawn Andrews debuting at LT.

The results speak for itself as New York stomped Seattle in a 41-7 rout. However, as mentioned earlier this evening, the victory had casualties. Both Diehl and Adam Koets (who spelled Seubert multiple times at C), suffered injuries. While the severity of the injuries are still unknown, the theme will likely be recurring in the near future.

Shaun O’Hara is not getting any younger or healthier. A Pro Bowler, team leader, and local product, O’hara has been a key member of the organization since arriving in 2005. Now, he is out indefinitely with a similar injury to the one that ended Strahan’s 2006 campaign prematurely. It is not likely that the Giants will continue to pay out a Pro Bowler’s salary in 2011 for an ailing player. (more…)

Koets Out, Seubert and Andrews In.

by Dan Orlando on November 7th, 2010 at 3:43 pm

All week we have heard speculation about the situation at C for the Giants. When it became apparent that Shaun O’hara would be forced to spectate, the odds on favorite to replace him was Adam Koets.

As most of you know, Koets replaced O’hara earlier this season for multiple games and despite some expected falters, was an adequate solution. Despite this, the Giants have made opted to rearrange the O-line a bit more. Rich Seubert will be shifting over from LG to snap while David Diehl returns to his 2006 guard spot.

Last but not least, the must anticipated installment of Shawn Andrews into the starting lineup will occur today as the former Eagle will get a crack at the LT job.

Shawn Andrews Continues His Comeback

by Charles Costello on September 2nd, 2010 at 2:57 pm

USA TODAY has a very interesting story on Giants’ offensive lineman Shawn Andrews, who is attempting a comeback after being diagnosed with clinical depression. It’s amazing, and very sad, to hear how Andrews has been treated.

“I’ve been called everything in letters,” he says. “Some of the stuff I’m even embarrassed to say. One said, ‘The next time I read your name, I hope it’s in an obituary.’ “

Andrews recalled another fan who once asked for his autograph. The same person turned on him after he could not find it within himself to report to training camp in 2008. “You’re a disgrace to the world,” the man told him.

Yes, the Giants need help on the offensive line. That’s why Jerry Reese and Tom Coughlin are giving Andrews a chance. But anyone with a heart has to love that he’s getting this chance.
