Watch: Run and Shoot With Shaun O’Hara

by John Fennelly on January 5th, 2012 at 5:15 am

Shaun O’Hara was the Giants’ center from 2004-10 and anchored the team’s most consistent line in memory. In fact, that offensive line combination (O’Hara, Chris Snee, Rich Seubert, Kareem McKenzie and David Diehl) set an NFL record for consecutive games played as a group.

His key to this year’s offensive line’s success: what else – continuity.

He joined the Loud Mouths to break down the team and compare them to the 2007 Super Bowl Champion team.

David Baas Joins Giants

by Dan Orlando on July 27th, 2011 at 10:52 am

Former 49ers C David Baas has agreed to terms with the NYG this morning.

Obviously, he was brought in to fill the void left by an older (injury stricken) Shaun O’Hara who has been released. Like O’Hara. Baas started his career as a G but was eventually moved to C when San Francisco was bit by an injury bug at the position.

As you already know, O’Hara’s position change led to Pro Bowl level success.

O’Hara and Seubert May Not be Gone for Long

by Kel Dansby on July 26th, 2011 at 7:35 pm

The New York Giants have started free agency off with a bang. They have began shedding cap, which has meant the release of many fan favorites such as Shaun O’Hara and Rich Seubert. But it is not yet time to panic. The Giants can still bring back players that have been released at a more affordable salary.

In the case of O’Hara and Seubert they are both returning from injuries they suffered last season. The team may not yet be ready to completely redo the offensive line and could see this as the perfect time to reduce their salaries. It would allow the team to keep both players at a cap friendly price while grooming younger players to replace them next season.

Other cuts are still on the horizon and it wouldn’t be surprising to see Shawn Andrews, Brandon Jacobs, Aaron Ross, and Chris Canty suffer the same fate. Though these players may be released soon there is always the possibly of them still being a Giant again in a week’s time.

This manipulating of the cap happens every season, it just seems overwhelming now because of this post-lockout hastened free agency period. The Giants’ roster may not look much different than last year’s when everything is said and done.

O’Hara To Join Seubert; Will Be Cut

by Dan Orlando on July 26th, 2011 at 2:41 pm

Shaun O’Hara, a former captain and spokesperson for the New York Giants will be released.

Coupled with the departure of fellow veteran O-Lineman Rich Seubert, this news signals a significant remodeling of an aging unit that at one time was the strongest in the league.

O’hara was a solid if not standout player during his time in New York, which started when he was signed as a free agent in 2004. Moving from G to C, The Hillsborough native helped both RB Brandon Jacobs and Derrick Ward rush for over 1,000 yards each during the 2008 campaign.

O’Hara leaves a vacancy at C that Adam Koets will compete to fill during camp. Koets played well when O’hara was lost to injury in 2010, but suffered a torn ACL himself in Seattle.

Grading The Units: Offensive Line

by Rich Resch on July 12th, 2011 at 8:30 am

Grading The Units: Quarterbacks

There are a wide variety of opinions on the Giants’ offensive line floating out there.  Some believe the unit is aging and falling apart at the seems.  Others think that the unit, while towards the end of its prime, can still pass protect with the best of them.  I’m somewhere in the middle.

The guard play of Chris Snee and Rich Seubert has never come into question, but with Seubert injured, the Giants will have to figure out who is going to start left of center until the time when/if Seubert is healthy enough to return.  The best healthy guard on the roster besides Snee is David Diehl, who has been playing out of position at left tackle for a number of years.

Diehl has been up and down the last couple of years, and at times has been a liability in pass protection.  He would benefit from a move back to guard, but that would create another gaping hole protecting Eli Manning’s blindside.  Kareem McKenzie has aged gracefully and is still a strong option at right tackle, when he is not dealing with his own injuries.

Who is holding down the center position is also a major concern: Shaun O’Hara has fallen off a cliff the past couple of seasons and may never be the same.  Seuberts did a nice job in the middle, but, of course, he may never be the same after his injury.  Adam Koets did a solid job filling in, but – stop me if you’ve heard this one – he too has injuries to deal with.

There is some intriguing depth, but even bigger questions.  Is William Beatty ready to take over as the full time left tackle?  Can Shawn Andrews stay healthy for long enough to be a factor?  Where do youngsters Mitch Petrus and James Brewer fit in?

The optimist in me thinks that the Giants’ coaches can succeed in cobbling together a sufficient line for the 2011 season, much like they did in 2010.  The pessimist in me thinks that the line will be a disaster unless a legitimate left tackle emerges from the group or is added via free agency.  The truth is probably somewhere in the middle.

Advanced Stats: Giants Interior Linemen

by Rich Resch on June 16th, 2011 at 10:00 am

Recently we looked at Pro Football Focus’ system that graded the best and worst tackles in the league.  Today, we examine their rankings of the best and worst guards and centers of 2010.

Chris Snee ranked as the #8 tackle, while Rich Seubert came in at #13.

Snee has been our best lineman for some time, but it’s great to see Seubert recognized for his great play.  2010 was probably his best year as a professional, as he was forced to move inside to center due to injury and made the transition seamlessly.

As for the best centers…well, Shaun O’Hara was not on this list.  He did, however, rank as the third worst starting center of 2010, behind only Jeff Faine of the Buccaneers and Eugene Amano of the Titans.

Not surprising, considering O’Hara’s troubles trying to play through injury last season.  Like all of us, he’s the oldest he’s ever been, and he’s not getting any younger.  We can hope that his troubles were mainly due to his being injured, but there’s a real possibility that his days as a positive NFL contributor are over.

Prove me wrong, Shaun.  Prove me wrong…

Giants Conclude Workouts

by Charles Costello on June 11th, 2011 at 6:35 am

Dan Benton, our contributor from Giants 101 has a report from yesterday’s workout at Bergen Catholic High School in Oradell, NJ. Twenty seven Giants were in attendance, and players addressed the media following the workout.

Here’s what Benton posted from Giants center Shaun O’Hara talking about this week’s workouts and the labor situation:

“It’s good to get football back on the brain. It was an opportunity to teach the younger players. Aside from being teammates, a lot of us are friends and it was a great chance to bond this week. Guys appreciate that.”

“The business side of the league is never pretty for the players and it’s never pretty for the fans. This is the ultimate manifestation of that. There’s no more respected an owner than John Mara. What the players love about him is that he’s not in it for the business, he’s in it for the game. The problem is that there are 31 other guys who all have to agree on the same thing.”

O’Hara: ‘We Owe It to Our Fans’

by Charles Costello on May 19th, 2011 at 5:56 am

Giants center Shaun O’Hara on Monday’s court ruling which kept the lockout in place:

“I don’t think it hurt the players. We would have welcomed the opportunity to go back and train at our facilities and we would have liked to have really gotten together as a team and been able to do some things to get ready for the season. Hopefully June 3rd, we will hear some good news.”

O’Hara on the likelihood of players and owners reaching a deal:

“It is something that is doable. There is no reason for us to not have something in place before training camp. That would be a travesty for everybody involved. As we get closer to that, I think everybody understands that and they will realize a sense of urgency. We don’t have a choice. We owe it to our fans, we owe it to the NFL to get it done. Baseball is America’s favorite pastime. But there is nothing more American than NFL football.”

Giants in the News: Shaun O’Hara

by Charles Costello on May 17th, 2011 at 2:53 pm

Shaun O’Hara isn’t letting the lockout sack his good work.

The Giants center has written a children’s book to teach kids how to make smart decisions with money. O’Hara is set to embark on a school tour to promote the book and to make children aware of the basics of finance. He will speak at 10 a.m. at Peekskill Middle School on June 1.

From the Peekskill-Cortland Patch:

“I remember my dad selling the family car when he wanted to start a business,” says O’Hara. “There was no going into debt–no credit cards. My parents taught us to spend what we earned and be fiscally responsible.”

Meanwhile, the 3rd Annual Shaun O’Hara Foundation Golf Outing and Banquet will take place tomorrow at the Trump National Golf & Country Club in Bedminster, NJ. Here’s some info:

This event will feature your favorite current and former New York Giants, as well as celebrities from other NFL teams and professional sports.
