The WheelHouse debates if Jets head coach Rex Ryan deserves credit for the Giants’ Super Bowl run.

This morning only one NY coach had to stand in front of a podium and outwardly admit defeat. Yesterday, the Jets went through the motions like a mail-order bride on her wedding night and now the brash Rex Ryan will be spending his January watching Tom Coughlin’s Giants make a run at a 4th World Title.
Today’s press conference, which featured a defeated and somewhat less jovial Ryan signaled a shift that was two years in the making. The Giants didn’t recover in 2009 after a wasted 12-4 ‘08 season. Instead, they choked in their first real challenge of the season and slid down the standings for the following weeks. Mark Sanchez and Sexy Rexy proceeded to earn sports page cover stories nationwide.

A season of Hard Knocks, two AFC Title game trips, and the removal of the word “Giants” from the top of their home field, brought us to this past July. The Giants were seemingly stagnant. Their apparent apathy to the departure of Kevin Boss, Steve Smith, and nearly Ahmad Bradshaw did little to quell the rumors that the organization was taking a knee after the lockout. Perhaps Coughlin and Kevin Gilbride had been retained simply because of the uncertainty ahead after the 2010 collapse.

The Grinch Bowl is heating up. Both the Jets and Giants are gaining confidence this week through the “rivalry” game that has so much more meaning than who owns New York.
The Jets for some reason possess some type of swagger. They are an 8-6 team with a plethora of problems that threaten their third consecutive playoff appearance under head coach Rex Ryan. We understand that Ryan has revived the Jets and brought them to the doorstep of the Super Bowl only to be denied both times.
His bravado is wearing thin. Jet fans are nervous, especially after getting disemboweled by the Eagles last week in a game that exemplified everything that is wrong with this team. His words are beginning to ring hollow.
“Rex loves to talk the game,” said NFL Network analyst Joe Theismann. “At some point it becomes just noise.”

Jets head coach Rex Ryan is never at a loss for words, and today was no different. The Jets simply got brutalized by the Philadelphia Eagles yesterday and Ryan did not seem to want to speak too much about the spanking nor about the injuries to QB Mark Sanchez and RB Joe McKnight. You can read more about Jet-centric stuff over at The Jets Blog.
Here are some nuggets from Ryan about the Giants, this week’s game and the two clubs’ effort to coexist in the same space – courtesy of the Jets Media Relations Department:
On if he feels the Jets are the “Big Brother”:
Well, certainly we were the better team in the first two years. We made the playoffs, went to the championship game. To say a team’s better than you that never went to the playoffs is ridiculous. Clearly, we were the better team my first two years here and we get to prove it on Saturday who the best team is this year. Quite honestly, both of us are having disappointing years, but it comes down to who beats who. It doesn’t matter about the other things, you’re basically the same record and everything’s at stake, so the proof’s in the pudding. Whoever wins this game, I think is clearly the best team in New York.

“I’m not backing down from one comment,” Ryan said. “I believe we are the best team in New York. My goal is to be the best team in the National Football League, not just in New York. I’m not backing down one bit from that statement. I believe that will be the case.”
Ryan can’t resist the trash talk.

From our colleagues over at Giants 101….Jets coach Rex Ryan chimes in on Eli Manning‘s recent statements:
“Eli’s saying he can be in the conversation, [and] I certainly understand where he’s coming from. He’s won a Super Bowl,” Ryan said. “Is he Tom Brady and Peyton? Probably not. But he’s pretty damned good.”

Jets’ coach Rex Ryan is at it again. He gets in front of a microphone and the inside voice comes flowing out.
Today, in his first presser of the year, he commented on playing the Giants on Christmas Eve….
That one is going to be a special game. Oh, it’s just going to be another game. No, it’s not. We all know what that game stands for. That one is one you’re going to get your tickets for early. That one is going to be a beauty.
Ryan also revealed the Jets’ process in signing Plaxico Burress…READ

The draft is over, Eli and company have finished up in Hoboken, and the players are locked out. That means there’s not much to report on the second Sunday in May (with the exception of the developing story out of Albany posted below this one). But this is football, these are the New York Giants, and no matter what Rex Ryan says, the Giants always matter around here. Here’s a look at a few stories:
Gary Myers defends the Giants and thinks that Rex Ryan’s insecurities are being revealed when he talks about the Jets being the big brother: “I’ve said many times Ryan is quite entertaining and his trash-talking and speaking from the heart is refreshing compared to so many NFL head coaches. But he’s on the verge of a credibility issue here. At some point, the Jets have to win the Super Bowl or nobody is ever going to take him seriously. And he doesn’t further his own cause by belittling the Giants, an institution in this town.” NY Daily News
Bob Raissman says that the NFL Network disrespected Bob Papa by making him audition for his job, then replacing him with Brad Nessler: “This was despicable and gutless, too. If NFLN honchos wanted to fire Papa, which they obviously did, why not just immediately tell him his services were no longer needed? Instead, they dragged him through the mud, humiliated him.” NY Daily News
Newsday counts down the Top 10 Giants of all-time. At No. 10: Tiki Barber: “The diminutive running back overcame fumbling problems early in his career and blossomed into the team’s all-time leading rusher. Barber finished with 10,449 rushing yards and 55 rushing touchdowns. He retired a year before the Giants won Super Bowl XLII, and his critical remarks of Eli Manning and Tom Coughlin have brought about criticism of Barber himself by many Giants’ fans. At his Ring of Honor induction ceremony in August 2010, Barber was the only member of the elite group who was booed by fans. Even so, it’s tough to overlook his on-field accomplishments, which could put him in line for a Hall of Fame induction.” Newsday

One more day until the NFL Draft…
In other news, the Giants opened their facility to players yesterday. Only three managed to show….there is mass confusion abound in this current labor climate. Is the lockout lifted, or not..?
from our colleague at the WSJ, Aditi Kinkhabwala….
One day after federal judge Susan Nelson issued a ruling lifting the lockout the NFL’s owners had imposed on the players, only one thing was clear: nobody had any idea what on Earth is supposed to happen next. Rather than giving us a proper strike, one with picket signs and giant rats and daily sidewalk press conferences, the NFL has produced the sort of labor battle only a lawyer could love……Some players didn’t know if they could use the team’s workout facilities. Coaches didn’t know if they could actually greet their players. Agents were basically useless and reporters were reduced to standing around and keeping score….
Chris Canty came to work yesterday as did Brandon Jacobs and Mario Manningham. Canty was permitted to work out, but the others were not. The Giants reportedly will allow players into TPC, but will limit their activities going forward.

I know many of our readers disagree with my advocacy for Giants OC Kevin Gilbride and want to see the team part ways with him. Just keep in mind that you can all consider yourself in the Buddy Ryan school of thought.
Way back in the mid-1990′s when Rex’ dad and Gilbride were coordinators for Jack Pardee’s Houston Oilers, there was an ugly incident that occurred on the sidelines during a nationally-televised game vs the Jets.
