Even if Eli Manning loses Super Bowl XLVI, he still has an opportunity to become the top QB in the Manning clan. With brother Peyton’s future still uncertain, Eli – at 30 – has much more ahead of him (and possibly a few more championships to win). Big brother, who will be 36, is coming off major neck surgery and suddenly his prospects are not as promising as Eli’s. Funny how things work out, huh?
From the esteemed Philadelphia journalist John Smallwood, one of the few, true pros left in the business….
TO BE HONEST, this isn’t a debate I contemplated having.
On one hand, I’ve always believed that the accomplishments of New York Giants quarterback Eli Manning have been shortchanged because they have been judged in comparison to those of his older brother, Peyton, of the Indianapolis Colts.
I never agreed with those Eagles fans who had so much contempt for the Giants that they refused to ever give Eli his full due, even on those occasions when he clearly outplayed whoever was quarterbacking the Eagles.
Sure he has had some clunkers, but for most of the past 5 years, Eli Manning has been a top-tier quarterback.

Some people have gotten the memo. Others have not: This is Eli’s world. We’re all just living in it.
Even though Tom Brady is going to be in Super Bowl XLVI in the House that Peyton Built, It’s Eli Manning‘s show. If his Giants win this game, there’s no denying who’s era we’re living in….
Reporter: Are you going to talk to Peyton about the noise in the stadium?
Eli: “I don’t think he’s ever been the away team in his own stadium.”
These are the type of questions the NFL’s most-clutch QB is getting these days.
About his brother. About Tom Brady. About his ‘claim’ that he is elite. About everything but him…
Reporter: Do you have a relationship with Tom Brady?
Eli: “Not like Peyton probably. I’ve seen him around and we’re always friendly. He’s always been nice to me. So besides that, we’re not real close”
Excuse me if I’m missing something, but hasn’t Eli beaten Tom Brady the last two times they met? Why are they still treating Eli like the poor relative all the time?
Peyton, who missed all of 2011 with a neck injury, is now suddenly living in Eli’s shadow.
Josh Alper of NBC San Diego says that page has been turned for some time…
“Peyton is old news, basically. Eli is the player who it once seemed was being forced into the role of franchise quarterback simply because his last name was Manning. The Eli story is fresher, which, along with the unlikelihood of finding yourself even contemplating such a changing of the guard, makes it an easy one for people to buy into.
Eli is in another Super Bowl. Against Brady. With big brother by his side like Apollo Creed and Rocky. Two Mannings vs one Brady.

Is it too early to start talking about the NFL MVP? Of course not. We are just like everyone else, we like to speculate, too…
The NFL a QB league and a QB has won the award the past four years and will probabaly continue to win it going forward. The NFL is being dominated by one team right now: the Green Bay Packers, and they are on a historic run.
The leader of the Pack is QB Aaron Rodgers, who has 37 TD passes in 12 games this season, putting him on a pace to challenge Tom Brady’s 50 in 2007. He also has thrown only 5 INTs and has a QB rating of 125.3, which would also be an NFL record.
Rodgers was named NFC Offensive Player of the Month in September, October and November this year. He clearly has the inside track.

Say what you will if you’re a critic of New York Giants’ quarterback Eli Manning.
It’s all been said countless times before… Manning doesn’t exude the same type of on-field leadership skills as his brother, Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Peyton Manning. And, he simply hasn’t had, nor will he seemingly ever possess the overall quarterback skills of Peyton.
But, one criticism of the younger Manning signal caller that would be unfounded is that he lacks toughness.

The Colts agreed to terms Wednesday with former Giants QB Kerry Collins, who may be asked to come right in and start if Peyton Manning hasn’t completely recovered from offseason neck surgery when the season opens Sept. 11. The signing has drawn mixed reviews…
“We don’t even know him, we ain’t vanilla, man, we ain’t no simple offense,” receiver Reggie Wayne said. “So for him to come in here and be the starter, I don’t see it. I think that’s a step back.”

With the Albany conundrum put to rest, the whole Giants organization can take a deep breath. The move just wasn’t doable this year.
Logistically, it made no sense. There is too much housekeeping to do down here. Uprooting an entire organization 150 miles north at the drop of a hat was just too tall a task. Especially if your organization is, well, disorganized.
2011 has not been a normal year. There have been no mini-camps, no rookie camp, no OTAs, no free agent signings and limited monitoring of players rehabbing from off-season surgeries.
The Giants made the right decision. I know it pained John Mara to break his word to the powers that be in Albany, but he has to do what is best for his people. This was best.

Yes, folks…it’s a Saturday in the offseason. That usually means we post at a leisurely pace unless something breaks. Tomorrow we will be at the Giants 25th anniversary event and we will have much to report.
But today, we present some material sent to us by our colleagues over at TMZ.com…..it appears the Brothers Manning were seen shooting a TV promo here in town….dressed as cops…
from TMZ……”Peyton Manning and younger brother Eli were spotted in Brooklyn last month sporting police uniforms for a video shoot. TMZ spoke to a rep from DirecTV who tells us the whole thing is part of a project for DirecTV — but insisted it’s NOT a commercial. We’re told Eli had one really great performance … but Peyton was far more consistent.”

Eli Manning has been taking a few hits this season for his 25 INTs and the fact that his Giants failed to make the playoff for the second consecutive season, despite going 18-14 over that span.
Solace can be found for Eli, however, in Bloomberg BusinessWeek‘s Power 100 which ranks the most powerful athletes in the world.
Brother Peyton is No.1, but Eli is the top NY-based athlete on the list at No.17. The Yankees’ Derek Jeter is second at No. 26.

Good news for the Giants as they prepare for the Titans?
The brothers huddled in a stadium tunnel, hands tucked into their pockets, heads bowed as if in prayer. As equipment bags were shuttled back and forth behind them, Peyton and Eli Manning stole one last moment after a blowout game that brought joy to neither of them. Long Eli’s protector and sometimes his tormentor, Peyton steered the conversation away from his Colts’ 38–14 battering of Eli’s Giants and instead brought up New York’s Week 3 opponent, the Titans. The Colts play Tennessee twice a year, and Peyton’s knowledge of the Titans’ defensive schemes is vast. After doing everything in his power to beat Eli, Peyton was already eager to help him. Satisfied that his little brother was of sound body and mind, Peyton hugged him, slapped him on the backside and scheduled a fraternal chalk talk. Eli’s eyes came to life. “I’ll call you Tuesday,” Eli said. (Sports Illustrated, 9/27)
The Giants are hoping that that phone call included plenty of talk about how to beat Tennessee.
