In mid-November, if someone told you that the Giants had a championship-level defense and that DC Perry Fewell would be retained, you would have had them committed. As it turns out, both of those things happen to be true right now.
The Giants’ could not make the stops when they needed to at points through this season, surrendering huge parcels of yardage to even the most mediocre of offenses. The fans – and the media – called for his dismissal.
Then, suddenly, things turned around. The defense came alive in late December and have carried the Giants to the Super Bowl, and possibly beyond.
Fewell spoke to the media today….
On being a defensive coordinator in New York...“It’s a challenge every day, but I love living in New York City. I go to the office and work every day, but as long as my family is happy, I’m happy.”
On how different the game will be if TE Rob Gronkowski plays….“Very different. The speculation of if he will or if he won’t, that’s very difficult, because you can only use study. He’s been in every football game they’ve played this year so what do they do without him. It’s a difficult thing.”
On if he was fearful of losing his job during the season….“Not at all. I go back to faith. My faith is in my family and in myself and in football. Actually, I really didn’t know, because I was so focused on how to make our football team better. As I told you in Buffalo, I like puzzles. I like puzzles and I knew I could figure it out. Once we figured it out and I knew we could make a run and we could do well. So, not at all.”

The Giants are one win away from another Super bowl appearance. Let’s let that statement sink in for a moment. The team that few if any gave a chance to in August, September, October, November & December….is again making noise in January, much like the 2007 Giants.
Or are they more like the 1990 Giants?
Today during the NFC Championship press conference, Giants head coach Tom Coughlin spoke of history. He was the wide receivers coach for the 1990 Giants that won Super Bowl 25: “A lot of our players are aware of history, but that was a long time ago”
It can be said that much like the 1990 & 2007 Giants teams, this year’s Giants are “hitting their stride” at the right time. Even with what seemed to be an “officiating bias” against them, they have persevered, thrived on the controversy of spotty play at times, and ill-timed injuries at others.
It seemed like the TV networks and the league wanted a Saints vs. Packers title game. That didn’t happen. Instead we have a rematch of the 1990 battle by the bay.

Thursday is the day the media gets a shot at the Giants three coordinators: OC Kevin Gilbride, DC Perry Fewell and STC Tom Quinn. Each unit will be under the gun to keep up with the NFL’s most prolific team of 2011 – the Green Bay Packers.
Fewell on what changed to improve communication on defense…
“It was just a combination of, some of our young players started to grow up. We did have a number of young players on the field at the same time. Chase Blackburn has been a tremendous welcome coming back to our squad and being able to communicate with our guys and get on the same page with our guys. I think it’s just the work throughout the whole season, guys are listening to each other, talking to each other, and never stop communicating with each other, and believing in each other.”

When Commissioner Gordon is in trouble, he puts out the bat signal. Giants’ defensive coordinator Perry Fewell just turns to JPP, the Giants’ second year DE, who has been so dominant this season we forget how porous the rest of the defense had been most of the year.
JPP’s heroics held the defense together, while the others convalesced and/or regained their footing. The defense was rife with injury, and JPP saved the season by maturing into one of the league’s best defenders in what seems like a matter of weeks. Now that Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora are rounding back into form, the Giants’ newest superstar has some high-profile partners going into the postseason.
During Fewell’s media session today, a reporter asked him: Who is this number 90 kid ?
“I hope he shows up this week, too,” Fewell said, knowing his job is lot safer with Jason Pierre-Paul around.
Fewell on what he is expecting out of JPP at this stage of his development…
“He’s progressed every week. We just look for him to keep doing the same things he’s been doing. We’re not asking him to do any more than what he’s been doing. In practice he’s making plays. The game is coming to him naturally now and that’s fun to see for a player like him.”

SNY Insider Mike Garafolo of the Star Ledger reports that Giants’ DC Perry Fewell is under contract until the end of next season and will likely return unless he is scooped up as a head coach by another franchise.
“Despite Steve Spagnuolo’s being on the market after his being dismissed as Rams head coach, it appears the Giants are content with Fewell’s performance. The team is ranked 27th in total defense, though the No. 1 seeds in each conference – the Patriots and Packers – are ranked 31st and 32nd, respectively.”

from Rich Conforti of Ultimate NYG:
Enough is enough. It’s an issue that’s been highlighted on this Giants blog again. And again. And again. And again. And again.
The Giants Tampa 2 defense seems to get a bit more porous with each passing week. For whatever reason, this team’s personnel is not built for zone coverage. Whether it be through constantly biting on play action fakes or just sheer inability to adjust and react, the Giants’ back seven continues to look lost in zone. Game after game we see linebackers at the second level allowing receivers to cross right in front of their face for easy completions in the ten yard range.

Here are some snippets from yesterday’s pressers with the Giants’ offensive and defensive coordinators – Kevin Gilbride and Perry Fewell - and ST coordinator Tom Quinn:
Gilbride on the Redskins’ pass rush….
“They’re a blitz team. The last few teams we’ve played are blitz teams. Each of them are a little bit different philosophically in how they accomplish it, but you have two, to me, outstanding rushers. Their two outside linebackers are both terrific players. If you’re not careful, you concentrate so much on those two that it opens up opportunities elsewhere.”
Gilbride on RB Brandon Jacobs, who has amped up his performance while backfield partner Ahmad Bradshaw deals with foot woes….
“I think he’s shown more confidence in terms of being aggressive, going after people and you can only do that if you’re comfortable with your assignments and the way that the game flows. I think he’s done a good job….The obvious thing just looking at him, he’s running with great confidence so his cuts are much more precise, much more authoritative. He looks more physical and I think when you’re feeling confident about what you’re doing you let it flow and that’s what it looks like he’s doing. The million dollar question is why and I don’t have an answer for that. I’m just happy that it’s starting to manifest itself and I think he’s doing a good job. It’s been fun to watch and it’s definitely helped. There’s no question.”

The final four games of this Giants season are crucial to both Perry Fewell and Kevin Gilbride – the Giants’ defensive and offensive coordinators.
Both have had to juggle personnel in key spots all season long due to the team’s extensive rash of injuries.
The result has been right about where one would expect it to be under the circumstances. The team is 6-6 after twelve games. They realize that injuries are part of the game and they also know they are expected to achieve the team’s goals regardless of the hand they are dealt.
For several seasons now, both coaches have treaded water. It’s time they lived up to expectations and coached to the level of their resumes.
The two men spoke with reporters yesterday:

Needs to Have Solid Showing vs Packers to Save Face
Giants’ DC Perry Fewell was supposed to be the anti-Bill Sheridan. That he may be, but his results are proving that he is no different. The Giants’ defense is still vulnerable to big plays and they are destined to collapse again for the third season in a row.
Fewell still has some straws to grasp at. He has five games to prove he is worth retaining. The players seem to like him, although you’d never know it by their performance.
Sheridan was not so lucky. He lost the players. Then he lost too many games. Fewell has the players on his side, but that alone will not salvage his tenure as Giants’ DC. He has decided to fight for his job and is challenging his players to fight along with him:
“Obviously we need to play with more energy. We have to play with more passion. That was a game against a playoff football team, we have aspirations of being a playoff team. Sometimes it’s just the will. It’s the will to get it done. We didn’t will ourselves to get it done. That’s what I can’t explain, why we didn’t will ourselves to get it done because we prepared well enough to get it done and we just didn’t do it.”

Every Thursday, the Giants three coordinators – Tom Quinn (special teams) Perry Fewell (defense) and Kevin Gilbride (offense) meet with the media. This week, the three have a lot on their plate as the Giants’ roster keeps shifting shape due to injuries, inexperience and underperformance.
19 yards rushing, just a bad game all around?
Gilbride: It was a bad game all around. There’s no question. You hope that it was an aberration, that it’s not a downward spiral. We actually thought we were making some headway, not as fast or as much as you’d like, but we thought it would get better and improve. But last week is not what you were looking for.
How much concern do you have with the position changes on the offensive line?
Gilbride: You always have concern, whatever the position change is that takes place. Obviously up there it can have an impact everything. Not just passing game, but everything, run game, pass game, protection of the quarterback, what have you. You’re concerned and you just hope that whoever you put in there is going to rise up and play the way you think he can, or he wouldn’t be on the team. We wouldn’t put him in in the first place. We’re confident. We have some guys in the backup role who can play.
