The Giants have a big decision to make when it comes to DE Osi Umenyiora. He is in the final year of his contract and plans to make the Giants’ summer an uncomfortable one unless his fate is decided before then.
We personally here at GFB want the Giants to find a way to keep him. He has earned his place in NYG history and the team should give him a two-year extension with a competitive bonus. That would be fair for all. What do you think?

Giants’ DE Osi Umenyiora is in the final year of his contract. He is one of the game’s best at rushing the passer and separating him from the football. In fact, he’s one of the best all time when it comes to that.
He still has not heard from the Giants about his future, nor their plans for him. He would like to get a fat extension and finish his career in Blue, but the Giants are playing this one close to the vest.
GM Jerry Reese has a long memory. He remembers last year when Osi called him a “liar” and then went on a mini-wildcat strike during training camp: not quite holding out, but not participating, either.
The bad blood was shelved after Osi returned from knee surgery last October and had one of his finest seasons. This year, someone has to make a decision. Osi can hold out, which will be messy, or Reese can either pull the trigger on an extension or trade the veteran DE. Osi is ready for both of those scenarios.

The NFL Draft is roughly two weeks away and the teams in the NFC East have holes to fill. Each team will be looking to fix these weaknesses via the draft or trade, so here are a few areas of need that they will likely pursue.
Cowboys:
Offensive Guard/Center – The Cowboys became more athletic at the tackle spot last season by drafting Tyron Smith and the unit can still use an upgrade. The interior of the Cowboys line looked out matched last season by more athletic interior lineman. Both the Eagles and Giants had success pressuring the Cowboys up the middle using line stunts or a blitz.
Cornerback – The Cowboys recently released Terence Newman and Mike Jenkins was often injured during games last season. Rob Ryan needs a play maker in the secondary and the Cowboys are in a prime position to draft either the #2/3 cornerback or the #1 safety on the board.
Outside Linebacker – DeMarcus Ware is obviously one of the top 5 defensive players in the NFL, but across from him Anthony Spencer has been regressing each season. The Cowboys have to be able to play on the other side of the line of scrimmage if they want to be successful in this Rob Ryan style of defense.
Defensive End – Defensive end isn’t the most glamorous position in the 3-4 defense but the Cowboys could use some youth at the position. They have been relying on a veteran rotation at the two spots and never really had a true run stopper at either one.
Giants:
Offensive Tackle – The Giants decided to not bring back RT Kareem McKenzie and David Diehl is more suited for the right side at this point of his career. The Giants could use a legit Left Tackle that can learn from Eli and the current veteran lineman.
Tight End – Martellus Bennett is supposed to step in and solve all of the Giants’ problems at this position… I’m not sold on that. He is a gifted athlete, but he has underachieved so far in his career. He was more worried about making rap songs in Dallas than catching passes. A young athletic TE or a converted college B-ball player would be a good project for the Giants to try and develop this season.
Safety – The Giants tried to address their lack of depth at the position by drafting Chad Jones a few seasons ago, but due to his unfortunate accident they are still searching for a true 3rd safety. The Giants really came on strong last season when they ran their hybrid nickel package with 3 safeties on 2nd down and 3rd and short. This allowed the team to add athleticism and hide their biggest weakness which is linebacker.
Osi Umenyiora Trade – Trading Osi is a topic for another article, but it seems as though the Giants are aligning themselves to make this more of a possibility.

The Giants have seen what their defense looks like with Osi Umenyiora and without him. They obviously prefer it with him. The general consensus, though, is that the cap-strapped Giants will not extend the 30 year-old strip-sack specialist’s contract, sending him packing to the highest bidder.
Not so fast. The other day, Osi said he wants to remain with the club, even if it meant taking a cut in salary. Yesterday, at the NFL Combine, Giants’ GM Jerry Reese sounded as if the team was willing to accommodate Osi….from Jenny Vrentas of the Star-Ledger:
“We’ve got a lot to talk about. It could happen,” Reese said today at the NFL Scouting Combine.
“But right now, we have a lot of issues to look at. We’ve just got to formulate a good game plan and see if we can get it done.”
Umenyiora is under contract with the Giants through 2012 but has expressed frustrations through the course of the extension he signed back in 2005. He is due to earn a base salary of $3.975 million in 2012.
Reese said he has not yet met with Umenyiora or his representatives since the season ended but him not ruling out working on an extension is news.
“We are open to everything right now,” Reese said. “But we don’t know what we can do yet. We don’t even know what the cap number is going to be. There are a lot of issues that we have to fix and address. So we will see what will happen, though.”

Giants’ DE Osi Umenyiora has two well-deserved Super Bowl rings. If he gets to stay in East Rutherford to win another one, he’d be pleased. But if he does it somewhere else, so be it.
“We’re just going to have to wait and see,” Umenyiora said on ESPN’s Mike and Mike, via ProFootballTalk.com. “I can see it going either way. I can see where they would keep me, I can see where they would trade me, because it makes sense both ways. So hopefully things will work out in my interest. I know the team is going to do what’s best for them. They’ve always made the right decisions for that organization. Whether that’s keeping me or trading me, I’d love to stay, but at the end of the day I understand it’s a business and hopefully things will work out.”
Osi, 30, has played his entire nine-year career with the Giants and is entering the final year of a seven-year, $41.3 million deal. He is underpaid right now for his production (9 sacks in only nine games this season), and is scheduled to make $3.975 million this year with a $642k bonus. Osi can easily be traded at that salary. He’s cool with that.
“Me and Jerry Reese, me and the owners, Mr. Mara and Mr. Tisch, we’re all cool,” Umenyiora continued. “Even when all that stuff was going on, it wasn’t really as contentious as people would have thought. We just sat down and had a lot of conversations. We went back and forth as to what was going on. They understand it’s a business just like I understand it’s a business. If anything happens, in the event that I am traded or released, it’s not going to be bad. They would probably be doing it for my own good, in actuality, so I’ll be happy with anything that happens.”

Giants’ DE Osi Umenyiora knew he made a mistake yesterday when he didn’t attend a mandatory media session. He didn’t know just how big until yesterday, when the league docked him twenty grand, and again this morning when he met the media, who asked him little about football – focusing mainly on his forgetfulness…..
“Honest mistake. We had just went through the whole media day the day before so I wasn’t sure that this was mandatory so I went to hang out with my family. It was a mistake, a costly one, but a mistake none the less.”

Millions of people around the world have identical plans for Sunday evening. While the majority of them settle in for just another annual viewing of The Super Bowl, Giants fans will have the special privilege of actually watching their own team compete in the legendary contest.
Missing a drive to go on a beer run will not be an option this year for those that read this blog. But as I did last week, I once again ask: Why? What makes Giants Football so enthralling? What makes this 2nd Super Bowl appearance in 4 years so special?
In my view, you are only 1/2 a fan if you don’t understand how your team got to the point it did. The successes and failures of the past seasons weave the story that makes every down, every play, and every minute of Big Blue action unmissable. So for the next 3 days, I will be breaking down the Giants millennium thus far in 4 year installments. Enjoy.
2000: The Giants started the first season of the new millennium with a revival of the throwback uniforms worn before the modern era. The new look, which featured a solid blue home jersey and a lower case “ny” logo instead of “GIANTS” spelled out on the helmet, was accompanied by the removal of the neon green astro turf that coated the Meadowlands field. Giants Stadium was once again home to natural grass turf.

But the old school vibe was designed to help inspire a new attitude and direction for the storied organization. After wading through a purgatory of mediocrity throughout the majority of the 1990’s, the Giants front office was determined to restore a winning tradition to one of the league’s most iconic franchises.

The Super Bowl is one week away. The lights, the cameras, the Maxim Tailgate party and, at the center of it all, two quarterbacks taking the stage for the second time in four years.
This has become an Eli vs. Tom Bowl.
So, why am I only consumed with the Giants defensive line vs. the Pats offensive line. Mostly because the memories of the 2007 Super Bowl are still fresh.
Watching the absolute mayhem that the Giants defensive line inflicted on Tom Brady was quite a sight as the Arizona desert became a coming-out party for Justin Tuck and swan song for the Hall of Famer-to-be Michael Strahan.
Not to be forgotten was the high-flying Osi Umenyiora, who would not be denied his path to the quarterback.
As the 2007 season kicked off, I knew very little about the Pats offensive line. As the year unfolded, Matt Light and Logan Mankins made their status known as two of the best linemen in the NFL.
However, as good as those two warriors are, the Giants front four has won the battle up front on a consistent basis. And now, four years later, that battle will unfold again on the biggest stage—Super Bowl XLVI.

Giants’ DE Osi Umenyiora has only had two on-field fights in his career, both with New England OL Matt Light.
“Yeah, man, it is what it is. Me and him, I’ve actually fought him twice, actual real fight on the football field, twice,” Umenyiora said. “Me and him, we have history. We’re going to rekindle it on Sunday.”
