Last night, the Giants defeated the New England Patriots, 21-17, to become the first 9-7 team ever to reach the Super Bowl and win it. The 1979 LA Rams and the 2008 Arizona Cardinals were two others that reached the big game but both came away losers.
Watching this game, you wouldn’t think it set records for anything other than anxiety, but truth be told, several impressive records were set or tied. Some by longevity and others by skill.
Giants’ head coach Tom Coughlin became the oldest coach to win a Super Bowl at 65, topping the Rams’ Dick Vermeil who won at age 63.
Eli Manning became the first QB to open a Super Bowl with nine consecutive completions.
Punter Steve Weatherford set a record for most punts inside the 10-yard line with 3.

From our man at Capital New York, Greg Hanlon….
The fact that the 9-7 Giants are only three-point underdogs to the 13-3 Patriots, and the fact that around 85 percent of WFAN callers are predicting a double-digit Giants win, speaks to a generally accepted premise: The Giants team that started off this season 7-7 is a wholly different entity than the one that has since gone 5-0.
This is the N.F.L., after all, when the margin between mediocrity and greatness is razor-thin. Last year’s Super Bowl champions, the Green Bay Packers, made a late-season leap from one to the next. So did the last Giants Super Bowl team, in 2007.
Further evidence that such a transition is possible can be found in the person of Justin Tuck. Like the Giants, he was having an underachieving, disappointing season through the first 14 games. Since then, he has done like his team and started to play like he should.

It’s Groundhog Day. Doesn’t this week seem eerily similar to the Bill Murray classic….or is it just me…? Even Tom Coughlin used the word redundancy in his presser on Wednesday….
“I don’t know how any of you could have a question after yesterday, unbelievable. I was OK until that guy came over in the Adventureman suit and the other guy who had the number and leather helmet. Actually, that guy looked pretty good in that helmet. That was a little shaky.”
Here is what you need to know today:
- Both teams will hold morning media sessions and then practice afterward.
- Yesterday, DE Osi Umneyiora missed the mandatory media session, saying he “misunderstood the schedule” and was fined $20k by the NFL.
- Every Giant player on the Giants’ 53-man roster participated in practice – including RB Ahmad Bradshaw, who usually does not practice until Fridays. “I just hope he’s okay tomorrow,’’ Coughlin told NBC’s Peter King.
- The Pats’ Rob Gronkowski (ankle) did not practice again. His status is still ‘day-to-day’ but is expected to be in uniform Sunday night.
- John Parry, a 12-veteran, has been named the referee for Super Bowl XLVI.
Antrel Rolle says there is no more to talk about this week….
“There is nothing that needs to be said at this point. We are here and this is our final resting ground, and our team is going to go out here and be the best team possible this Sunday. Everything that has been said that needs to be said is over and done with. Nothing needs to be said at this point.”
And that’s that.
