The Giants went west 3 1/2 point underdogs and came back seven point losers. They came one play from barnstorming back against the stingy Niners in Candlestick Park after making a slew of mistakes earlier to bury themselves.
Neutral observers come away from this game believing the Giants were the better team and the Niners had upset them. That’s the way I saw it, anyway…
I’m moving on. The Giants play every game like pilots who fly by the seat of their pants. Sometimes they miss the runway while landing….The Giants are in first place after 10 weeks after all that’s happened this season with the injuries and whatnot…. I’ll take it. So should you.
Next up: Philadelphia. Last season, the Eagles came here and stole the Giants’ dreams of postseason play in a seven-minute flurry of heartbreak. This time around, the Giants will be ready. They want to bury Philly, who basically needs to win every week the rest of the way to have any chance at anything this year.
A crushing of Philadelphia would make my season. After what happened last December, that game means the most to me on the schedule this year. My mandate to the Giants: crush them.
Beat Philly, split with Dallas, put Washington out of it’s misery and then steal one of the other games on their schedule against Green Bay, New Orleans and the Jets.
That gets you to 10 wins and the NFC East crown. That is all I am asking for.
When Michael Boley got hurt yesterday, the Giants decided to go with undrafted rookie Spencer Paysinger instead of Jacquain Williams. Why do I feel Drew Rosenhaus is the reason for this…?
When the Giants replaced the injured Aaron Ross with Michael Coe yesterday in the red zone, the Niners did not challenge him. They took shots at Corey Webster, instead. They ended up kicking a FG….

1. Packers (8-0) – The defense may be their Achilles Heel, allowing 460 yards to the Chargers. They did force three turnovers and score two touchdowns, though, so it’s not all bad.
2. 49ers (7-1) – They continue to win ugly games, and now lead their division by a ridiculous five games.
3. Saints (6-3) – Few things are more important than starting off your day with a well-balanced offense. The Saints have the second best passing offense and the ninth best rushing offense.
4. Giants (6-2) – Tom Brady had won 31 straight regular season home games, and the Patriots had won 20 straight. To knock them off without your two biggest offensive (non-quarterback) weapons is impressive. Good thing the Giants were not without Jake Ballard and Victor Cruz.

1. Packers (7-0) – As long as Aaron Rodgers is healthy, the Packers are favorites to repeat.
2. 49ers (6-1) – I never dreamed I’d be ranking this team at number two, but that’s the way the season has progressed.
3. Saints (5-3) – At home, they look near-unbeatable. On the road, they’re just another talented, yet flawed team.
4. Lions (5-2) – They easily threw aside a bad Broncos team on the road like a good team should. Their +92 point differential is tops in the league.

The 4-2 Giants have a golden opportunity to put some distance between them and their division rivals this weekend. They face the 0-6 Miami Dolphins at home while the Redskins, Cowboys and Eagles face tough challenges.
Washington has lost three of their last four and now face the high-scoring Bills, who are coming off a bye. Dallas is in Philadelphia Sunday night in what is shaping up as a “must-win” for the Eagles.
If the Giants beat the Dolphins this week, they will move to 5-2. Should Washington and Dallas both lose, the Giants will have a two-game lead over the other three.

1. Packers (7-0) – It was surprising to see the Vikings play them as close as they did, but the Packers are the cream of the crop right now.
2. Saints (5-2) – Wow. We knew the Saints were far superior to the Colts, but that looked a match up of LSU and my high school football team.
3. 49ers (5-1) – Few picked the 49ers to be 5-1 right now, but looking at their schedule, this team could pretty easily end up 12-4.
4. Lions (5-2) – The luster is starting to come off, as they have now lost two straight games, albeit to good teams. They better win this week at Denver, because things get a lot tougher after their week 9 bye.

1. Packers (6-0) – The only thing I’m sure about is that the Packers are the best team in football. After that, take your pick.
2. Saints (4-2) – Yeah, they have two losses while teams below them have one, but I still believe the Saints are a step above the 49ers and Lions. It took a freak occurrence (Brees’ 3 INTs) for the Bucs to hang on at home.
3. 49ers (5-1) – Their upside is curbed by their mediocre QB, but beating the Lions in Detroit is impressive. I’d probably still pick the Lions in a rematch, but I have to give the 49ers their due.
4. Lions (5-1) – The fact that this loss came at home is surprising, but the 49ers look like they are a legitimate playoff team. We’ll see how this young squad bounces back after a loss for the first time when they host the Falcons.

1. Packers (5-0) – Scored 25 unanswered points in a tough environment to stay undefeated.
2. Saints (4-1) – Went head to head with the Panthers and needed a late scoring drive to win, but there’s no shame in that against Cam Newton’s upstart team.
3. Lions (5-0) – One of the best stories in football, the Lions just keep on rolling. For the first time this year, Calvin Johnson did not score two touchdowns (5 receptions, 130 yards, 1 TD).
4. 49ers (4-1) – The Niners put the rest of the league on alert when they hung 48 points on the Bucs. It’s hard to consider them a true Super Bowl contender with Alex Smith as their QB, but this is a solid football team.

1. Packers (4-0) – Aaron Rodgers is the best player in football right now.
2. Saints (3-1) – They didn’t blow out the Jags like they should have, but they got the win. Jimmy Graham is a breakout star at tight end.
3. Lions (4-0) – Another huge comeback, this time from down 24 in Dallas. Calvin Johnson has two touchdowns in every game, and is a serious MVP contender.
4. Giants (3-1) – Its kind of ridiculous to say a 2-1 team could have a must-win game, but a loss to the Cardinals would have been a huge blow. So far, in three out of four games, when the big plays needed to be made, the Giants were the team making them. Also, [enter obligatory Victor Cruz reference].

1. Packers (3-0) – Jermichael Finley was one of the best players non-fantasy footballers didn’t know about, until his breakout three touchdown performance to sink the Bears.
2. Saints (2-1) – Beating the Texans despite giving up the luckiest touchdown pass I’ve ever seen is another feather in this team’s cap. It was also good sign that Mark Ingram scored the game winning touchdown.
3. Lions (3-0) – The fact that they were down 20-0 to the Vikings gives me some pause, but the fact that they came back to win in overtime shows how dangerous this offense can be.
4. Giants (2-1) – A statement win over the Eagles puts them into an early three-way tie for first place in the division. The fact that so many players stepped up and no one was seriously injured was something this team sorely needed.

1. Packers (1-0) – The defending champs are a well oiled machine, and Aaron Rodgers is nearly unstoppable.
2. Eagles (1-0) – They are still rusty, and Michael Vick didn’t have a great day through the air, but they still blew out the Rams. They could be scary when they start firing on all cylinders.
3. Bears (1-0) – I thought the Bears overachieved last season, but their defense looked downright dominant against a good Falcons team.
4. Saints (0-1) – They went toe-to-toe with the champs. The loss of Colston will hurt, but Brees is good enough to weather the storm.
