The Giants had another draft that could help the franchise to a third Super Bowl title in this young century. From first-round pick RB David Wilson to seventh-round selection DT Markus Kuhn, GM Jerry Reese took useful, promising players that will either upgrade or maintain his team’s stature as a league power.
From Jared Sherman of CSNPhilly……
“The reigning Super Bowl champs know a thing or two about drafting. The core of their team is built from a slew of savvy drafts over the years. Whether it’s trading for Eli Manning, taking a bit of risk on a “toolsy” DE like Jason Pierre-Paul, or finding significant contributors in the middle and late rounds — Justin Tuck, Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw, and Mario Manningham — the Giants work the draft as well as anyone in the NFL.” (Read Full)

Veteran blogger and lifelong Giants season ticket holder Craig Santucci knows how pivotal fourth round draft picks can be for a team. This year the Giants had two of them: TE Adrien Robinson of Cincinnati and Auburn OL Brandon Mosely. He is leery about how Robinson will turn out, but Mosely – who was taken after Robinson – seems to be more of a refined product.
Giants GM Jerry Reese on Robinson: “We really think this guy has a huge up-side. He is a big, big man; long arms. He didn’t catch a lot of balls for them. But he is kind of a late bloomer who has really come on. And we think this guy is kind of a JPP of tight ends. We like these kind of people. We will get Mike Pope involved with this guy. We brought him in for one of the visits. We are excited about him. We think he can really come on and develop and be a terrific football player for us. So it is very exciting for us to get him.”

Giants first-round draft choice David Wilson was brought in to replace the loss of Brandon Jacobs and the potential loss of the often-injured Ahmad Bradshaw. He could end up being neither of those two. Pro Football Weekly’s Eric Edholm believes Wilson could end up being more like Tiki Barber….
The Giants’ drafting of first-round pick RB David Wilson from Virginia Tech makes their backfield picture — as well as perhaps their special teams — a little clearer.
The free-agent loss of Brandon Jacobs, flawed as he might have been, opened up an important job in the RB rotation, although Wilson is by no means a Jacobs doppelganger. In an interview with WFAN radio, Wilson described himself as a hybrid of the Ravens’ Ray Rice and the Texans’ Arian Foster, but we hear some Giants people see a little Tiki Barber in Wilson, too.
Like Barber, Wilson enters the NFL with the reputation as a fumbler (nine lost in 499 college touches on offense), but head coach Tom Coughlin personally worked with Barber on the way he handled the ball well into his career and appeared to curb the bad habit significantly.
The move to draft Wilson might actually have been made less with Jacobs in mind and more with projected starter Ahmad Bradshaw, whose chronic foot problems have worried the Giants. Although Bradshaw says he hopes to be ready by training camp after having bone-marrow injections to speed up the healing process, the Giants knew they needed more depth and insurance at the position. Giants GM Jerry Reese appeared on 98.7 ESPN FM Radio today with Ryan Ruocco and Stephen A. Smith this morning. Unlike Mike Francesa yesterday, they didn’t let Jerry off the hook regarding the Osi Umenyiora contract impasse…
“I don’t carry grudges. That is the offseason, that is part of the job,” Reese said via the Star-Ledger.
“In the offseason there is always some controversy about contracts. It is not just one person, it can be several different people with contract situations. That is part of my job, it is never personal, I don’t think it is personal with respect to players and it definitely is not personal with respect to me. It is just part of the business”
“We will get through this and we will see what happens moving forward. It is part of the business. It is not a big problem for me to have guys say some things. I think sometimes some people say things that they obviously really don’t mean. Everybody is trying to make as much money as they can for themselves and their families and everybody understands that and it is not personal.”
Osi knows its a business, too. But after teammate Mathias Kiwanuka scored a three-year extension last week, Osi has to be wondering if it really has become personal. Reese basically outed Osi and his agents the other day by revealing Osi had turned down extension offers the past two years.
Reese does not want to make more of this than he has to. He would like to have harmony in camp this year by making peace with one of his team’s more valued veterans.
“I’m not going to discuss Osi’s contract situation with you guys. I can say this to you, though: the New York Giants are a better football team with Osi Umenyiora on our team,” Reese went on to say.
“We respect him as a football player. Our goal is to have Osi play football with the New York Giants and retire as a Giant. That is what we would like to do first. All of our options are open as I have said before but Osi makes us a better football team, I do know that.”
We concur.

RB David Wilson was the highest-rated player on the board when the Giants picked in Round One according to Jerry Reese. Was it a coincidence that he played a need position?
Do the Giants Draft Based on BPA? Yes – But It’s Not What You Think it is.
from Matthew Cohen / GFB Analyst
Every year during the draft, The Giants say that they draft the best player available. And some years, so-called experts call them out and say that there is no way that the Giants draft pick is consistent with a best player available philosophy. So is Reese lying or are the so-called experts wrong?
I have no particular inside knowledge of the Giants war room or draft board but, like most of you, I do read their pre-draft and post-draft comments. And their draft history is available for all to analyze. My belief is that the so-called experts are wrong based on a misunderstanding of what best player available means.

According to reports, former Giants MLB Jonathan Goff has agreed to terms with the Washington Redskins.
Goff, a fifth-round selection in the 2008 NFL Draft, started all 16 games for the Giants in 2010 and was entrenched to do the same last year when he blew out his knee in training camp and missed the entire season. He became an unrestricted free agent last month.
The Giants chose not to pursue Goff, re-signing Chase Blackburn and trading for Keith Rivers instead. Rivers’ presence moves Michael Boley to MLB, where he can continue his role as the play caller in the Giants’ base defense.
The team also has hopes that one of their second-year LBs (Mark Herzlich, Greg Jones) can continue to develop in the middle.
from CSN Washington:
The 26-year-old Vanderbilt alum will compete for a backup spot at inside linebacker behind London Fletcher and Perry Riley. He will be going up against Lorenzo Alexander, former Giants teammate Bryan Kehl, and the just-drafted Keenan Robinson.
There were reports that the Redskins had tried out Goff before re-signing London Fletcher earlier this month.

We may never know whether or not the Giants were shopping Osi Umenyiora during the recently completed NFL Draft, but what we do know is that Osi is not–by any stretch–guaranteed to return next season. Jerry Reese addressed the trade speculation over the weekend:
“Our first choice with respect to Osi is that he will play for the Giants and retire a Giant,” Reese said. “That is what we would like to happen. Osi has been offered an extension two years in a row now, so we would still like to make it work. Hopefully, it will work out.”

Giants’ third-round selection Jayron Hosley held a conference call with the media today. His spun some yarns about his college roomie at VT (Giants first-round pick, David Wilson), compared himself to some of the league’s most talented CBs and told reporters he came our of college early because the college game was getting too easy for him….

Seasons like that of the past two NFL champions only underscore the significance of adding depth to a team that’s already a serious championship contender.
No team knows that better than the New York Giants, who have recently been on both sides of that equation.
Learning From the Past:
Two years ago, the Green Bay Packers, severely decimated by several key injuries on both offense and defense, were a mediocre 8-6 before they got healthy enough and also relied on a deep enough roster to end the Giants’ season with a late-season win over New York that sparked an historic run as the first NFC six seed to win a Super Bowl.
