Mario Goes From Third Wheel to Big Wheel

by John Fennelly on February 6th, 2012 at 9:52 am

Giants’ WR Mario Manningham’s promising NFL career has been one that has been held back by incessant ailments and inconsistent performances. This year, he almost became an afterthought with both Hakeem Nicks and Victor Cruz having monster seasons.

Last night, with the Patriots pulling out all the stops to neutralize Cruz and struggling to keep up with the prolific Nicks, Mario made the best of the opportunities QB Eli Manning presented him with. His 38-yard reception on 1st-and 10 from the Giants’ 12-yard-line with 3:46 remaining jumpstarted the Giants’ game-winning drive.

“On the sideline they were going like this (gesturing a successful catch), so I knew I was in. It was a perfect throw,” Mario said. “They rolled into cover-two at the last minute and I saw the corner was acting like he was going to backpeddle, but he came up to play cover-two and I extended to the side a little bit and worked him outside. Eli (Manning) just put the ball on the money. Great pass protection, great ball. I knew where I was on the sideline. I knew I didn’t have that much room. Good thing I wear (shoe size) 11s, because if I wore 11.5s, I don’t think I’d have been in.”

Sunday Morning Update: Calm Before the Storm

by John Fennelly on February 5th, 2012 at 8:12 am

The Giants are readying for another – yes, another – primetime game. This time, though, it’s THE primetime game: the Super Bowl. Kickoff is approximately 6:40.

Last night, the team got an inspirational speech from head coach Tom Coughlin – one in which pronounced his love for the players – before they hit the hay for the 11pm curfew.

The day was an uneventful one for the Giants. One of their buses malfunctioned on the way to practice, but it did not effect any of the team’s plans. Practice went off without a hitch.

As per the pool report….

The Giants went through a crisp, 48-minute walk-through practice with every player on the team in uniform and accounted for.

Running back Ahmad Bradshaw showed barely a hint of soreness in his ankle as he went through all the scripted situations for the offense. In addition, safety Tyler Sash and defensive end Osi Umenyiora participated in the light, but focused work.

“He looked fine, no soreness, nothing you could notice,” Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said regarding Bradshaw. “This was all situational stuff, nothing unusual. It was a Saturday morning jog-through, all situations.”

Eli Manning is staying calm. When is he not calm? From NBC Sports….

What Are the Biggest Mismatches in Super Bowl XLVI?

by GFB on February 4th, 2012 at 1:03 pm

Our friends at Covers.com outlined the biggest mismatches of Super Bowl XLVI…

Vince Wilfork vs. Giants’ interior

Covers: “Wilfork was the biggest reason why Baltimore couldn’t get All-Pro Ray Rice going. On 14 of Rice’s 21 attempts, he was held to three or fewer yards….The Giants know what’s coming. In the Week 9 meeting, they only ran between the guards three times, gaining seven yards. New York center David Baas, who did not play in Week 9, is a terrible run blocker, so the Giants won’t run up the middle more than a few times. …On pass plays, the Giants must give Baas help. Otherwise, Wilfork will collapse the pocket and Eli Manning won’t be able to step up.”

GFB Editor John Fennelly: Agree. The Giants need to get Mitch Petrus in this game, put him in the middle of the line and leave him there for the next decade. He is – in my opinion – the toughest guy they have.  He’ll batter Wilfork’s thighs, tiring him out. The running game thrives when he is in there.

Saturday Morning Report: Getting Closer

by John Fennelly on February 4th, 2012 at 5:56 am

One more wakeup until the big day. There is so much blather about this game from external sources it’s hard to tell the insiders from the charlatans.  No matter, we will have the straight dope for you right here at GFB.

Here is what you need to know….

Ahmad Bradshaw did not practice Friday, citing that his foot was “a little sore”. Everyone else practiced in full except DE Osi Umenyiora (knee/ankle) and S Tyler Sash, who had his foot stepped on during practice. They were limited and are expected to play Sunday. Injury Report

Tom Coughlin has been pleased with the way the team has practiced….“So far this week, we’ve accomplished what we needed to accomplish,’’ Coughlin said Friday as per NBC’s Peter King. “The players have practiced hard and spirited. I think we’ll be well-prepared for the game.’’ Read More

In his presser, Coughlin continued to stress “finishing”…..“Again, I’ve researched the things that have transpired a year before or two weeks before. I didn’t think we finished very well. I took a grasp of that and wanted that to be the number one thing. It was the first thing we hit them with, and it’ll be the last thing they hear from us before they take the field.” Transcript

The Patriots, meanwhile, had a walkthrough at the Colts’ facility where they have been practicing all week. From Alex Marvez of FOX Sports.com…

“This is kind of like Saturday for us,” said Patriots head coach Bill Belichick, referring to the usual light session conducted on the day before a game. “We’ve had a little bit of extra time this week (to practice).

“I think we’re ready to go. We’ve worked hard this week Monday, Wednesday and Thursday in practice, and we had good practices back (in Foxborough, Mass.) last week. We went through some mental-review things out there (Friday).”

Tight end Rob Gronkowski participated in the session, which never saw players run faster than a trot while executing plays. Gronkowski practiced on a limited basis Thursday for the first time since spraining his left ankle January 22 in New England’s AFC Championship game victory over Baltimore.
