QB Eli Manning was still considered a green novice when his Giants were up against the accomplished one – Tom Brady – and the 18-0 New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLII.
This time around, he is much more an equal to Brady and his team is every bit – if not more – talented than Bill Belichick’s bunch. Manning was asked how different he is now as compared to four years ago.
“Anytime you have four more years of experience you should be a better quarterback and a better player – a better understanding of your offense, better control of what’s going on. I think I’ve made improvements in those four years,” Eli said. “I’ve worked hard to try to become a better quarterback and make better decisions and be a better leader. Those are some of the things I’ve worked on.”

Eli Manning met with the media Tuesday and said he felt good despite getting the snot knocked out of him during Sunday’s big win vs San Francisco. His gritty performance had laid to rest much of the debate about whether or not he is elite. He was asked if he had any regrets in staking that claim before the season…
“No. I don’t have any regrets. I thought I gave an honest answer,” Eli stated. “I didn’t regret it at the time or think anything of it at the time. Obviously it’s been made into a big deal, but I can’t always control that. I’m worried about getting ready to play this game and go out there and play my best football and get the team to play our best football. That’s my job. My job is to play the game. It’s your job to talk and make up stories.”
He addressed the team, mostly aiming his message at the newer guys who have never been this far in the postseason. The Super Bowl XLII MVP was business-like in his approach. No time to slip up now….
“I just told them a little bit about how to prepare for this – handle all of your business with tickets, getting that stuff done, just a few things on the mindset of this week. We have to have great preparation. ‘Prepare this week like you’re playing the game this week’,” Eli said.

A few final thoughts before the NFC Championhip Game tonight. Kickoff is scheduled for 6:40. The game will be broadcast on FOX with Joe Buck and Troy Aikman providing the call (which is not a bad thing, b/c if they doing your games late in the season, that means things are going well..)

WHEN SF HAS THE BALL
8 man box. Put pressure on Alex Smith to beat you. Where? On the outside. He is most comfortable with the inside passes, ie a crossing route or seam pass. Make him make the harder and more precise throw to the edge of the field. If he is able to make a perfect throw deep and out, it may be a big play, but make him earn that. New Orleans gave him inside throws and Smith had a good day.
It is the reverse for the SF running game. Take away the edge and maintain the lane discipline. Iupati likes to pull to spring those edge runs.
Who is the one player that is dynamic in the offense? Vernon Davis. Bracket him. I’ll take my chances with Webster in 1 on 1 vs Crabtree. And as noted this week, without Braylon Edwards, I am comfortable with Ross in 1 on 1 also, with maybe some deep help from Phillips if required. After reviewing more film from the Packers game last week, I was impressed with how well Ross did vs Jordy Nelson. Everyone saw the play where Ross got beat on the slugo where Osi had the sack strip, but Ross held his own against a quality WR, owing more to the simplified man coverage assignments he is getting. Ginn is questionable, but even if he plays he is a step down from Edwards. Once again, there is nothing that can consistently roast this Giants defense except TE Davis. That doesn’t mean that Hunter or a guy like Walker can’t beat you for a nice 15 yd gain to move the sticks, but that is the battle. The war is Vernon Davis.

There is little time to celebrate this morning, unfortunately. If you want to get the Super Bowl from the WildCard round, you have to put your head down and keep barreling forward.
The Giants’ dismantling of the defending champion Packers at Lambeau Field last night was a thrill for all fans of the Blue, but in the overall scheme of things it was just Chapter Two.
Chapter Three will be another daunting task: Jim Harbaugh’s rough-and-tumble 49ers at Candlestick Park. The advantage will go to the hosts (San Fran is a 2 1/2 point morning line favorite), but the Giants are the more experienced post-season team.
The way these two teams have been playing, there’s no way even the most pedestrian fan can resist.
“For us to come in here and win, we knew we would have to play one of our best games and I think we did that,” said Giants’ defensive captain Justin Tuck. “I don’t think they have anything to hang their heads about. I just think it just seems like our time.”

The NY Giants are going to California! The Road Warriors soundly defeated the Packers and overcame some of the worst and disgusting officiating in recent memory. Tremendous win! How many people would have forecast that Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees would be gone from the playoffs?! It’s the Giants vs SF for a ticket to Indianapolis.
Normally one of the things that we preach when you go on the road is the need for TDs, not FGs. But in the first drive, the Giants got a FG and it was G-R-E-A-T! We tweeted at the time:
“The first third down conversion to MM was really important. Normally I want and need 7 but I can handle 3 because #nyg took GB’s emotion”
Green Bay came into the game with a lot of emotion. The Giants took Green Bay’s best punch, drove the ball and put up 3. That first 3rd down conversion when Eli hit Mario Manningham on 3rd and 8 for 19 yards was GINORMOUS. That is a play that will go unnoticed by many, but it should not go unnoticed by any of us. It settled down the team. This wasn’t going to be ATL, where the offense would go through a first quarter drought. The message was that this Giant team was going to play for four quarters. Eli was money, Mario was money, the coaches were money, the Giants were money.

I am not a big fan of everything that Mike Francesa says, but I was listening to him give his monologue Friday and I think he made a lot of very good points:
1) The Giants are a big play team. They are #1 in the league in plays for 30+ yds. Do not try to make them a possession/run team.
2) The Packers have won their last 13 in Lambeau. This is not going to be an easy game in any scenario.
3) The Giants do have a shot, a credible shot. (Of course..) They will need the pass rush to win this game.

Packers’ DT B.J. Raji’s comments about the Giants’ offensive line being soft caused a stir in the Giants’ locker room locker room yesterday. Well, not really. The Giants don’t really care what Raji or anyone else has to say at this point….
“If you need extra motivation this time of year, there’s something wrong,” said OL Kevin Boothe. “It doesn’t change our preparation.” (See video above for more comments).
The Giants are more than ready for the trip to Green Bay. After a productive week of practice, they feel they can go in and give the defending Super Bowl champs all they can handle.
“We’re anxious,” said RB Ahmad Bradshaw, who was back at practice yesterday. “Ready to get out there and play. We have a lot to prove.”
If Raji is looking for tough guys, he can look no further than TE Jake Ballard, who is playing through a slight tear in his knee.
“A PCL is not like a sprained ankle,” Ballard told reporters yesterday. “It’s not like two days it hurts and then the next day ‘oh, this feels great’. It’s going to take time and and we don’t have a lot of time right now. It feels about the same…”
Head coach Tom Coughlin didn’t feel like doing much talking yesterday but gave an affirmative assessment of the play of DE Dave Tollefson, who has quietly become a key player on the Giants’ defense.
“He’s done an outstanding job for us,” Coughlin said without hesitation. “He’s been there all year, right through the thick and thin. As other people were not able to play he did and he contributed very well. He had a big game the last time we played Green Bay.”

The Giants are two days away from facing down the Packers at chilly Lambeau Field in the NFC Divisional Playoffs. They are as healthy as they have been for some time, with everyone (with the exception of LB Mark Herzlich) expected to practice today.
Yesterday, RB Danny Ware (concussion) was cleared for action while others – RB Ahmad Bradshaw (foot, back), S Deon Grant, CB Aaron Ross (concussion), DE Osi Umenyiora (ankle, knee) and CB Corey Webster (hamstring) were held out for precautionary reasons.
The 10-7 Giants have a tall task ahead of them in the 15-1 Packers, but from the outside (and the inside) this is a game between two evenly-mathced teams. The Giants hit some rough spots this year, that’s all. They feel they are now back at the top of the league where they belong. Look out…
“I think we had an ‘us against the world’ mentality throughout the ups and downs of this season when people told us that we couldn’t do this, we couldn’t win the division,” OL David Diehl told reporters yesterday. ” I think that our team really rallied together and I think that we became a stronger team because of it because it took all of us to look each other in the eye and have that accountability, that we believe in one another and in order for us to do it we have to go out there and play that way and I think that’s the way we have been winning games.”
The team is brimming with confidence as they embark on their journey into the frozen tundra. DT Chris Canty, who has been outstanding for the past month, sized up the team’s general mental and emotional state…

Let’s start out by addressing the topic of the near 2011 Giants collapse.
Did it appear at times that we were headed for one? Sure. Bottom line is that this team finished out the last quarter of the season with a 3-1 record. Despite endless amounts of nitpicking, this team rallied at the end of the season to make the playoffs.
Nitpicking? Do you call losing to Washington twice, Seattle and PHL’s Young nitpicking? I call it wholesale abandonment and underachievement. Better late than never, but why did it take Coughlin and Fewell so long to figure out that the Tampa 2 was a turkey?!
