Back to that Newsday list I mentioned yesterday, the countdown of the Top 10 Giants of all-time. At No. 2 they have Michael Strahan, with the following explanation: “A former second-round pick, Strahan emerged into a sure-fire Hall of Famer once he became a fixture at left end. He played with great leverage and dominated offensive tackles far bigger and heavier. Strahan broke Lawrence Taylor’s franchise sacks record by finishing with 141.5, and he capped a brilliant career with a Super Bowl run in his final season.” Of the 10 picks, this is the one I find to be the most debatable. What do you think? Is Michael Strahan the second best Giant of all-time?
In other Giants news:
ESPN New York’s Ian O’Connor just published a book on one New York captain. Now, he offers praise of another. Talking about Giants quarterback Eli Manning, O’Connor writes, “He speaks with more authority and stands with his shoulders square. The end-of-the-world loss to the Eagles last year didn’t send Manning cowering behind a desk; he called a team meeting for the first time in his seven seasons, and made sure his was the only voice heard in the room.” The column provides details of the workouts Manning organized in Hoboken last week.
Tom Coughlin apparently isn’t a big fan of Twitter. According to the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review, when asked about players using social media, Coughlin responded by saying, “I don’t know what the hell that is. I’m from a different era.” As you can tell by the article, I’m sure it comes as no surprise to you that Coughlin’s in the minority on this one. The benefits and pitfalls of Twitter, and all social media, are detailed in the piece.

Every team in the NFL has assets. Things they can’t live without when planning to have a successful season or franchise. These assets are the cornerstone of every winning team.
I was fortunate to spend a few minutes with one of the New York Giants’ hardest working and most respected players on the team. That asset is wide receiver No. 12 Steve Smith. Steve was in town promoting the Vaseline MEN Keep Your Grip Challenge and I caught up with him to ask about the knee, his rehab, Plaxico and a few other topics that are on the minds of Giants fans everywhere.
It was an absolute pleasure talking to Steve and I can say without question that this guy gets it. He is true professional and for all the Giant fans in the area, Steve Smith without question plays a vital role in making the Giants successful.

Since no current Giants are making any news, we have keep going to the well of ex-Giants and retired players for material.

For the past 17 years the Giants organization has one major constant…a defensive end that was going to play the run or the pass with a ferocity that NFL teams would have to game plan around that player.
Until former Dallas Cowboys Offensive tackle Flozell Adams stuck his leg out and tripped NY Giants Defensive End, Justin Tuck in September of 2009. That “bush league” play by Adams cost Justin Tuck more than a shoulder injury…it cost Tuck a season of mediocre play.
A year later a healthy Justin Tuck is back and showcasing to the NFL why he is a dominant player.
2009 – 59 tackles/6 sacks(16 games)
2010 – 32 tackles/4 sacks(5 games)
While Tuck may never pull down 16 sacks due to the double teams, the Tight End chips and the running back zone blocks, I am confident that No. 91, the new found leader on this team will rack up 112 tackles in a Pro Bowl quality year. The Giants success revolves around his ability to shut down the run and his ability to get up field and make quarterbacks cry.

Former Giant Michael Strahan isn’t blaming Tom Coughlin for the team’s struggles. From ESPN New York:
“Now all of a sudden he can’t coach? I don’t think that is the case,” said Strahan, now a Fox analyst who will be recognized as one of 30 players inducted into the Giants’ new Ring of Honor on Sunday night. “He has to just get these guys on the same page. As a coach you can only do so much, and you got to have some guys who are your leaders who can kind of control the situation and police each other.
“I read and see all this stuff … losing control of the team,” Strahan said. “There has been an evolution of Tom Coughlin, an evolution of being to the point where I felt early on it was almost unbearable to the point of where you realize he is right now.”

NFL Films ran a player-profile series a while back called “In Their Own Words”. One Giant player who was a perfect fit for the series was DE Michael Strahan.
This is the second part of a two-part segment. Part one is too long to feature. Needless to say, this piece is entertaining as Strahan is never at a loss for words…..

We figured during the summer months (aka the NFL dry season) we’d import some video for our readers each Friday to fill some dead air.
Today’s video is anything but. Giants fans of all ages will eat this first selection up with a fork and spoon.
Here is a ten minute clip from NFL Films’ America’s Game series.
It is about the 2007 Super Bowl Champion New York Giants. There is some rare footage here and interesting anecdotes from Eli Manning, Michael Strahan and Tom Coughlin.
The piece is narrated by Emmy Award and Golden Globe-winning actor (and lifelong Giants fan) James Gandolfini
