The NFL and NFLPA are continuing to negotiate a new CBA, but a deal may not be in place by tomorrow’s deadline. That means that the Giants newly acquired veteran FA’s and resigned FA’s are in jeopardy of missing more practice time.
The list of those unable to practice includes Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw, David Carr, Sean Weatherford, Ben Patrick, and David Baas.
Also an interesting/unsettling note: TE Kevin Boss is currently at the Oakland Raider practice facility.

Former Arizona TE Ben Patrick has agreed to terms on a 1-year deal according to ESPN New York.
This does not necessarily mean that the Giants have given up on Kevin Boss. Despite both being in the league since 2007, Boss has 14 more TD catches than Patrick (18) and a whopping 74 more total receptions (119). Therefore, New York may plan to use Patrick primarily as a blocker.

In 2010 The New York Giants went 10 & 6 and missed the playoffs for the second year in a row. They were embarrassed at home against the Tennessee Titans, lost for the fifth straight time against a not as talented Philadelphia Eagle squad, only to suffer the largest collapse in team history against the same team 4 weeks later.
The once mighty NY Giants defense allowed 347 points ranking them 17th in this category. The fans waited and held their breath for 137 plus days for their beloved New York Giants to take the field after the lock out.

My take on the state of the Giants after the most chaotic week in league history:
First let’s talk Burress. I didn’t see him coming back to the Giants and quite frankly I was utterly stunned that he planned a visit. We all know how that ended and the former Super Bowl hero is trading in his blue jersey for a “Sexy Rexy” T-shirt.
All this does is validate the concerns I had been airing (against much opposition) over the past few months. Steve Smith is not healthy. He is not ready to start the season and likely will start the season on PUP (meaning he is ineligible to play until after WEEK 6).
I never doubted his ability, or his value to this team when healthy. But this isn’t Madden. Players don’t heal from injuries in a neat and clean timeframe determined by a computer and then return to action immediately without a hangover. The Steve Smith you know and love isn’t a lucrative contract signing away. He is physically unattainable for an undetermined amount of time. The best case scenario at this point is to let him take the field mid season if he’s physically ready. There he can be a much needed reinforcement for an offense that will likely be missing at least one playmaker because of ailment.
Therefore, there is a vacancy that needs filling at the top of the Giant’s depth chart. Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham are both talented, dynamic downfield threats that give the Giants the ability to stretch the field. Their spots at the top of the receiving corps are obviously safe (barring injury). But a possession type receiver is needed.
I project Hixon to be the 3rd receiver on the field more often than not. His primary duties are to bring the return game back to life. The biggest concern was whether or not he could return to his old form after suffering an ACL tear. Thus far in camp, he seems to be showing no lingering signs of his injury.

Also Check Out Grading The Units: Quarterbacks
Today we examine the wide receivers as well as the tight ends. The wide receiver unit is rich with potential, injury risk and X-factors. The tight end core is, as the kids are saying, “meh.”
The biggest complaint for the wide receivers is that there is no “legit number one.” The definition of a “legit number one,” according to these people, is someone who blends both size and speed; someone who can stretch the field and double as a large red-zone target. My response to this argument is that if Hakeem Nicks is not a “legit number one,” this is a very rare breed. He may not be 6-5, but his playmaking ability is off the charts. He is fast enough to stretch the field (he has caught a 30 yard pass in a larger perecentage of his games than did Plaxico Burress as a Giant), and he wreacked havoc in the red zone last year, grabbing 11 touchdowns in 13 games. He may not be 6-5, but his playmaking ability is off the charts. He just needs to stay healthy.
Mario Manningham is still developing, but he looks poised to become one of the leagues better #2 targets. Domenik Hixon is a solid number three when healthy, and by all accounts he is near 100%. Pre-season stud Victor Cruz and rookie Jerrel Jernigan are interesting young players, but Ramses Barden could be the X-factor. (more…)

Eventually, this lockout is going to end. When it does, the Giants expect to return most of their offensive players, and the coaches and system will be the same. Kevin Boss told NFL.com’s Vic Carucci about the advantage that will give the Giants.
“I think that’s going to be a leg up on our competition,” Boss said. “It’s going to be tough for teams that have new coaching staffs coming in or drafting quarterbacks that are expected to play. So for us — the quarterbacks and receivers and tight ends — I think it’s important to get back together this time of year and just work on timing again. Start slow but start building up and as the (lockout) continues to go on, we’re going to probably have to start bringing in more people, maybe making it more of a team thing. Maybe get the offensive line out there and start walking through plays or what not.”

There was a low turnout of Giants today on the final day of workouts in Hoboken. Eli Manning, Sage Rosenfels, Kevin Boss, Michael Clayton, Samuel Giguere, and Dan DePalma came together for the sixth and - for now – final time at Hoboken High School. Asked if the workouts would resume at some point, Boss said the following:
“If this thing continues to go on, we might put together a few more workouts and ask maybe the defense to get involved, invite the offensive line … it depends on how long this thing goes. For now, it’s just good to get amongst the quarterbacks and wide receivers. If this thing keeps going, we might try to get more guys involved.”

from Paul Schwartz of the Post….
Add Kevin Boss to the list of Giants players who required surgery after this past season.
The Giants’ tight end yesterday underwent a minor arthroscopic procedure to repair an issue with his hip that was lingering during the season.
Boss had the surgery the day after his 27th birthday and he’s expected to be fully recovered before any real football activity resumes. He did not miss any time with the hip problem. The only game he did not play was in Week 2, because of a concussion.
“Surgery went very well,” Boss said on his Twitter account. “Makes me excited for next season.”

After an embarrassing two weeks, the New York Giants are very likely only 6 days away from beginning preparations for 2011. With the new year approaching, I thought it would be smart to go through some of the current members of the organization whose futures with the club are either hot button issues or otherwise in doubt. The piece is a long one and it is broken up into three sections: Out/On The Bubble/ In. As always feel free to let GFB know what you think.
Out
HC Tom Coughlin: While ragging on Coughlin has been an overused go-to option for writers and pundits league wide lately, the blade is swinging ever closer to his neck after yesterday’s loss. There is an argument for keeping him of course. His tenure thus far in New York has been an upgrade from a bleak stretch of time in the team’s history that spanned from 1992 through 2003. After a rebuilding period in 2004, Coughlin fielded an overall competitive squad from 2005 through 2008 and obviously brought New York an impressive Super Bowl win. But things have not been quite the same for the Giants since jumping out to an 11-1 start in 2008. Following up a Super Bowl run with 3 months of utterly dominant football, the Giants stumbled at home against Philadelphia that season and ultimately lost to the Eagles again in their first appearance of the playoffs. 2009 saw a 5-0 start turn into a 3-5 finish and 2010 saw a historical single game collapse, an unspeakable rash of turnovers, and an overall failure to execute on special teams. Coughlin, who is historically quite reliable when it comes to challenges, blew the Giants final challenge of yesterday’s game on an obvious unfavorable ruling and thus was unable to protest against at a late Eli interception on a key drive that was clearly caught out of bounds.

Another Moss was cut on Tuesday and it wasn’t Randy! Sure I’m late and piling on; however, this story seems to have slipped by just about everyone as justice was finally executed. Sinorice Moss has been cut!
Did you ever buy something that really never worked that well and you hung on to it for years hoping someday you would find use for it? Well, that’s what the New York Giants did for the last five years with Sinorice Moss.
The Giants hoped he could be the 3rd wide receiver, but that didn’t happen. The Giants hoped he could stretch the field, but that didn’t happen. The Giants hoped he could return punts and kicks, but that didn’t happen.
Final stats:
39 receptions.
421 yards.
3 touch downs.
