Remember how hysterical some got when the lockout ended and guys like Kevin Boss and Steve Smith jumped ship. Jerry Reese was not a popular man in these parts. But time heals, and while things can quickly change, some of the decisions that were made over the summer seem to be paying off for the Giants through the first six weeks of the season.
Take for example Boss and Smith – who were effectively replaced by Jake Ballard and Victor Cruz. In four games for the Raiders, Boss has seven receptions for 149 yards and one touchdown. In six games for Big Blue, Ballard has 15 catches, 273 yards, and two touchdowns. In six games for the Eagles, Smith has five receptions, 63 yards, and no touchdowns. Cruz, meanwhile, has 21 receptions, 398 yards, and three touchdowns in six games for the Giants.
Total production: Giants – 36 receptions, 671 yards, five touchdowns. Eagles and Raiders – 12 receptions, 212 yards, one touchdown.
You make the call.

Former Giants TE Kevin Boss suffered a knee injury in the Oakland Raiders’ 17-0 loss to the 49ers Saturday night.
As per Yahoo Sports:
CSN Bay Area reports that Boss, who had 531 receiving yards and five touchdowns last year for the New York Giants, sprained his knee and is “week to week.”
ESPN points out that because Raiders coach Hue Jackson’s “timetable was vague, it is impossible to gauge whether or not Boss will be ready for the regular season.” The Raiders open the season against the Denver Broncos on Sept. 12.

Yesterday, former Giants TE Kevin Boss sent a message to his Giant supporters via his account @KevinBossman

I hate to say it but, this season is beginning to remind me of the 2009 season when Jerry Reese went into camp with only 3 safeties. Kenny Philips went down with a serious knee injury which forced Mr. Reese to scramble for players.
He signed C. C. Brown and Aaron Rouse. That was a painful season and a painful lesson to learn. The next year(2010) Reese brought in Antrel Rolle and Deon Grant.
Tight Ends with NFL experience are always a plus for a successful season. The Giants are a bit thin in the tight end department with Ben Patrick(FA from Arizona) retiring and the loss of Kevin Boss. I would guess the Giants brass are burning up the phone lines looking for someone that can block and catch.
So the question is…with the recent trade of Greg Olsen, the #1 draft pick for the Bears in 2007 to the Carolina Panthers does Jeremy Shockey become expendable. Shockey’s deal is worth up to $4 million, with $1 million in guaranteed money.
Love him or hate him he’s an up grade over what is in camp now. If he became available would the Giants bring him back? Just a question to consider at 2:40am.
In one scenario he is a huge distraction and Eli can’t work with him.
In a second scenario Eli thrives knowing that this is his team and he can control Shockey much better than before.

By now you know that tight end Kevin Boss has signed with the Oakland Raiders, receiving a 4-year deal worth $16 million. Naturally, Tom Coughlin was asked about the impact of losing the three-year starter.
“The guys that are here are going to have to prove to us that we can continue and run the offense that we want to run,” Coughlin said per the Star-Ledger’s Zack Berman. “If we have to make adjustments, we’ll do it.”
It appears Travis Beckum is now the No. 1 option at tight end with Coughlin saying the third-year pro needs to be more consistent. Coughlin would not say if the team would look outside the organization for help at the position.

Kevin Boss has signed a four year deal with the Raiders, according to Adam Schefter. The deal is worth $16 million.
With no tall, impact receivers on the Roster, the 6-5 Boss was Eli’s only target that posed a height advantage against opposing defenses. With him gone, the Giants have a severely undersized receiving core. Jerry Reese has done a nice job re-signing his free agents up until now, but this is a move that is going to hurt. Boss was never properly utilized by Kevin Gilbride, but he always made the tough catch over the middle, even hanging on to the ball while being concussed, and was a quality blocker.
New addition Ben Patrick or under-performing third round picks Travis Beckum or Ramses Barden will have to step up in the passing game. There’s not much good that can come out of this for the Giants.
So long, Bossman.

The NFL and NFLPA are continuing to negotiate a new CBA, but a deal may not be in place by tomorrow’s deadline. That means that the Giants newly acquired veteran FA’s and resigned FA’s are in jeopardy of missing more practice time.
The list of those unable to practice includes Brandon Jacobs, Ahmad Bradshaw, David Carr, Sean Weatherford, Ben Patrick, and David Baas.
Also an interesting/unsettling note: TE Kevin Boss is currently at the Oakland Raider practice facility.

Former Arizona TE Ben Patrick has agreed to terms on a 1-year deal according to ESPN New York.
This does not necessarily mean that the Giants have given up on Kevin Boss. Despite both being in the league since 2007, Boss has 14 more TD catches than Patrick (18) and a whopping 74 more total receptions (119). Therefore, New York may plan to use Patrick primarily as a blocker.

In 2010 The New York Giants went 10 & 6 and missed the playoffs for the second year in a row. They were embarrassed at home against the Tennessee Titans, lost for the fifth straight time against a not as talented Philadelphia Eagle squad, only to suffer the largest collapse in team history against the same team 4 weeks later.
The once mighty NY Giants defense allowed 347 points ranking them 17th in this category. The fans waited and held their breath for 137 plus days for their beloved New York Giants to take the field after the lock out.

My take on the state of the Giants after the most chaotic week in league history:
First let’s talk Burress. I didn’t see him coming back to the Giants and quite frankly I was utterly stunned that he planned a visit. We all know how that ended and the former Super Bowl hero is trading in his blue jersey for a “Sexy Rexy” T-shirt.
All this does is validate the concerns I had been airing (against much opposition) over the past few months. Steve Smith is not healthy. He is not ready to start the season and likely will start the season on PUP (meaning he is ineligible to play until after WEEK 6).
I never doubted his ability, or his value to this team when healthy. But this isn’t Madden. Players don’t heal from injuries in a neat and clean timeframe determined by a computer and then return to action immediately without a hangover. The Steve Smith you know and love isn’t a lucrative contract signing away. He is physically unattainable for an undetermined amount of time. The best case scenario at this point is to let him take the field mid season if he’s physically ready. There he can be a much needed reinforcement for an offense that will likely be missing at least one playmaker because of ailment.
Therefore, there is a vacancy that needs filling at the top of the Giant’s depth chart. Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham are both talented, dynamic downfield threats that give the Giants the ability to stretch the field. Their spots at the top of the receiving corps are obviously safe (barring injury). But a possession type receiver is needed.
I project Hixon to be the 3rd receiver on the field more often than not. His primary duties are to bring the return game back to life. The biggest concern was whether or not he could return to his old form after suffering an ACL tear. Thus far in camp, he seems to be showing no lingering signs of his injury.
