You thought the Giants were done with injuries, didn’t you? Well, they’re apparently not. Starting MLB Jonathan Goff is now gone for the year, as Rich told you below….
Now what?
The Giants are left with two rookies at MLB: Greg Jones for sure and possibly Mark Herzlich, who is listed as a SAM. We would love to see a success story come out of one of them this year, but you would be asking a rookie to call defensive signals which is not likely to happen….
The Giants could bring in Kawika Mitchell, Lofa Tatupu, Keith Bulluck or even bring back the recently cut Philip Dillard. Those options are not very promising. Mitchell blew out his knee and hasn’t played a full season since 2008. Bulluck is not a MLB. The Giants tried him there last year and he lost out to Goff. If Dillard was of any worth, the Giants would have kept him. Lofa Tatupu is said to be finished.
This is a pickle the Giants are in now, that is certain. But it could work out if they sign a veteran and then one of those rookies steps in after a few games. Wishful thinking on our part.
The call could go out for Chase Blackburn. Hey, why not? He’s got as much left as those other guys – maybe more. Plus he’s a great ST player….He is still not on an NFL roster (and there may be a reason for that) but if you’re going to bring back retreads, why not bring back one who knows the calls?

Un-freaking-believable.
Jonathan Goff is out for the season with a torn ACL after colliding knee-to-knee with a teammate in practice.
I never believed in curses, but it is clear that this is the only explanation for what this team has gone through. And the season hasn’t even started yet.
Adam Schefter reports that the Giants are likely to sign Kawika Mitchell, so I’ll be sure to pass along information on Mitchell’s season ending injury when that inevitably occurs.

WFAN’s Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts broadcasted this afternoon from the Timex Perfomance Center in East Rutherford, the site of Giants training camp. Plenty of Giants stopped by to talk to the hosts, who were filling in for the vacationing Mike Francesa. Click on the player’s name below to listen to each interview:

LB Barrett Rudd: Tackling Machine
Sam Huff – Harry Carson – Pepper Johnson – Gary Reasons
The NY Giants have had some of the “all-time” best outside linebackers in the history of the game.
Lawrence Taylor – Brad Van Pelt – Carl Banks – Jesse Armstead
So what happened?
The Giants have not had a game changing middle linebacker in along time. With all due respect to Antonio Pierce(AP) who was a great field general and film junkie didn’t have the ability to play sideline to sideline as an elite linebacker.
I like Barrett Ruud. Four straight years of 100 tackles or more…that’s impressive. There are mixed feelings on him; however, some Bucs fans think he’s soft. I’m not sure how that’s possible averaging over 100 tackles a year. With not many stellar linebackers available…Barrett Rudd is going to get paid. Maybe overpaid.
He played at Nebraska…so he can play in the cold and should be on the Giants “short list”.

4. Jonathan Goff
Say what you will about the Giants needing to upgrade at linebacker, if you expected Jonathan Goff to be better than he was this season, you are clinically insane.
Goff was a fifth round pick in 2008, but missed the majority of his rookie season due to a back injury. In 2009, his first real season in the NFL, Goff saw his first real action at middle linebacker. When Antonio Pierce went down for the final five games of the season, Goff was thrust in to the starting role. Learning on the job, the former Vanderbilt Commodore had some ups (8 tackles against the Cowboys, an interception against the Eagles) and some downs (0 tackles in that same game against the Eagles).
With his limited play in 2009, there was no reason for anyone to think he should take over as the Giants’ full time middle linebacker. Even Jerry Reese had his doubts: he drafted Phillip Dillard in the fourth round and signed 33 year old Keith Bulluck, a career OLB, to compete for the starting MLB job. When the dust settled, it was Goff who won the job.
Goff finished with 80 tackles, one sack and one forced fumble. Are these the statistics of a star? Absolutely not. But Goff played the run very well, and was not as big a liability in the passing game as I would have expected. The bottom line is that, based on the expectations for the young, inexperienced middle linebacker, Goff’s season surpassed any real expectations anyone could have had for him.

The New York Giants need a game changing, sideline to sideline, play maker at linebacker. For those of you who might be thinking…Purdue, sorry, Ryan Kerrigan is not that guy. Yes, Kerrigan is an impressive athlete(6’4 263)…and a ball player through and through. He has dominating power and has made his presence known in the backfield of many college teams, but he should stay at his natural position with his hand in the dirt at the next level.
For those of you who were thinking of converting the boilermakers “Most Valuable Player” on defense you might want to look at a different guy for the Giants system. Yes, Kerrigan will be a 4-3 player in the NFL, but mostly likely at defensive end. After watching him at the college All-Star Skills competition I found him very stiff in the hips. His footwork is good enough for a defensive end; however, not the Patrick Willis, Brian Urlacher, Brian Cushing, type of lateral movement the Giants so sorely need.
The first unanimous All-American at Purdue since 1980 will play in the NFL and mostly likely will be a top 20 pick in the 1st round, but he is not what the Giants need. Kerrigan will not be a good linebacker, especially if he is asked to cover tight ends; however, with his hand on the ground and 20 lbs of muscle, the NFL will be happy and Kerrigan will be a force to reckoned with.

Giants MLB Jonathan Goff was featured in his hometown newspaper in Salem, Massachusetts this week. He is intent on coming back a year better and a year wiser to lead the Giants defense back to the playoffs in 2011.
“I want a ring,” said Goff, whose Giants went 10-6 this past year but missed the playoffs for the second straight year. “That’s why we play the games. There were high points and low points this season, but overall we did have a decent year.”

Some readers asked us to voice our opinion on what we thought the Giants might do in the off-season. Right now, the financial landscape and structure is status quo (and the players would like to keep it that way) but the new CBA has yet to be negotiated. What that will look like is any one’s guess.

Unprepared, understaffed, under-pressure and uncertain this NY Giants team has what it takes. Now, I love a year when the NY Giants are flying below the radar. I love a year when the “big mouth” Jets are telling the world how great they are; however, 2010 is starting to concern the Big Blue.
Injuries – 5 players key players came into camp recovering from recent surgery and at least 10 more have been injured this camp. The offensive line is fragmented and the 2nd team defensive backs look, well….overwhelmed!

Training Camp Begins in 10 Days
The University and the city of Albany are gearing up for the Giants arrival. Training camp starts there in 10 days – August 1st. Rookies and veterans are both required to report at that time.
The Giants’ first two selections in April’s draft – DE Jason Pierre-Paul and DT Linval Joseph are still unsigned. They cannot report to camp unless they have a contract in place.
Goff Is Chosen As A “2010 Breakout Player” By ESPN
Giants’ MLB Jonathan Goff was listed on ESPN’s Top 10 Breakout Players for 2010. In the segment below, Goff is not mentioned, but made the list at #7.
From the Blogosphere……
Ultimate NYG’s Andy Furman discusses the the Giants lack of leadership on defense. I believe I wrote a similar article not too long ago. We both agree that leaders are not appointed, they gravitate organically. That is not happening with the Giants and if it does, who will be the one to step into the role?
Our colleague Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN New York continues to do his preview series. Yesterday, he took on the WRs. I agree that Steve Smith is now the top guy, but the #2 slot is not so much of a competition as it is who fits where.
Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham are the two principals involved. My take is whoever fits better in the slot, will be placed there, not on the outside. Manningham may not be a better slot receiver than Nicks, meaning he and Nicks will split time on the outside and then Nicks shifts to the slot on 3-WR sets.
