Vote: Should Giants Trade Osi?

by Rich Resch on April 26th, 2012 at 6:00 am

Osi Umenyiora has long been seeking an extension, but Jerry Reese has not made it a priority. The Giants have been down this road before, and although Osi has often indicated his dissatisfaction, he has ultimately played whenever healthy.

The latest rumor is that the Giants may be interested in trading Umenyiora for a third round pick, which brings up the question…

PFT: Giants Draft Needs

by Rich Resch on April 24th, 2012 at 2:45 pm

At NBC Sports’ Pro Football Talk, Josh Alper breaks down the Giants’ four biggest team needs entering the draft. He lists offensive line, running back, tight end and cornerback as those needs.

Alper is spot on with his analysis, as these are all indeed spots at which the Giants will likely look to upgrade later this week. I would include wide receiver on that list, although the Giants can upgrade the receiving core by drafting a strong pass-catching tight end, such as Coby Fleener or Dwayne Allen. Still, I’d like to see them grab one of the many talented wide receivers, in addition to another tight end.

Considering Jerry Reese’s past drafts, it is often pointless to predict what position will be targeted in which round (although we do it anyway). Reese usually takes the player at the top of his list, even if he does not fill an immediate need. Reese and the Giants’ front office always have an eye towards the future.

As always, don’t be surprised when Reese takes a defensive lineman at some point. With depth an issue after Antrel Rolle and Kenny Phillips, safety is another position that might be addressed. Even linebacker, with all of the depth the team has, is a spot to watch due to the fact that so many at the position will be free agents after this season.

The one position we can safely cross off is punter. Aside from that, anything is possible.

Below are some quotes from Alper’s article.

Giants 2012 Dream Draft (Mock #3)

by Rich Resch on April 23rd, 2012 at 9:30 am

The dream draft is a mock draft created only with players I would like to see the Giants draft.  Many of these players will probably not be available for the Giants at their corresponding pick, but each pick is within the realm of possibility. After all, not one person predicted Prince Amukamara would fall to the Giants, and most people had Marvin Austin off the board before the Giants’ second pick as well. Last year’s dream drafts included LB Greg Jones and RB Da’Rel Scott.

Players from my first and second mock are ineligible.

1. LB Dont’a Hightower (Alabama)

I don’t care how many Linebackers are on the roster.  If Hightower somehow falls to 32, I’m taking him.  He’s a big, strong middle linebacker who is athletic for someone his size. Some scouts don’t believe he can be an effective pass rusher on third downs, leading some draft experts to speculate that he may slide on draft day. If Hightower can be a three down MLB, and I think he can, he’d give the Giants something they don’t currently have. The fact that he literally has the word “don’t” in his name only gives me slight pause.

Other dream picks: DE Chandler Jones (Syracuse), DT Devon Still (PennState) OT Jonathan Martin (Stanford)

2. RB Doug Martin (Boise State)

I’ve often said I am against spending an early pick on a running back, but if Martin somehow fell to the Giants at pick 63, I would be more than happy to select him.  Ahmad Bradshaw is tough, but brittle, and cannot be counted on to last a full season. Martin is a perfect fit for the Giants’ offense; he can block, catch and is an explosive runner. Many have compared his game to Ray Rice, and there is absolutely nothing wrong with that. He’s projected to go in the top half of the second round, but with teams devaluing running backs, it is at least within the realm of possibility that he could fall to the Giants.

Other dream picks: DE Vinny Curry (Marshall), WR Alshon Jeffrey (South Carolina), TE Dwayne Allen (Clemson)

3. OT Zebrie Sanders (Florida State)

Offensive line is arguably the Giants’ biggest area of need, for the 2012 season and beyond. Sanders is a huge specimen (6’6, 320 lbs.) and he played both tackle positions at Florida State. He was once considered a second round prospect, but his stock has slipped a bit, possibly due to the belief that he will not stick at left tackle.

Other dream picks: CB Casey Hayward (Vanderbilt), RB Isiah Pead (Cincinnati), RB Chris Polk (Washington)

The Quotable Jerry Reese: Highlights From His Thursday Pre-Draft Presser

by GFB on April 19th, 2012 at 8:53 pm

Jerry Reese said the scouts are excited about the draft. “It’s like game day for them.”

Giants’ GM Jerry Reese met the media at TIMEX to give his pre-draft State of the Giants presser. As usual, he stayed within the lines revealing very little, except that if Andrew Luck is available when the Giants pick, he wouldn’t hesitate to take him (“Without a doubt. If Andrew Luck’s down there, you think we wouldn’t pick him?”)

Here are some snippets for you to digest…..

On his draft philosophy….. “We never try to reach in the draft. We’re conscious of what we think our needs are, but we try to pick the best player in the draft. We do try to fill holes in free agency when we get an opportunity to do that, but we never say let’s get a certain position in the draft. We just try to pick the best player.”

NFL Draft: Biggest Misfires in the Jerry Reese Era

by John Fennelly on April 18th, 2012 at 12:14 pm

WR Ramses Barden was a third round selection that has had a hard time cracking the Giants’ lineup.

Jerry Reese has been in the Giants’ organization since 1994 and although he has only been GM since 2007, he has effectively been commandeering the Giants’ draft process since 2003.

The man has hit many a long ball calling the shots on draft day (and in free agency), but like any power hitter, he has inexplicably has missed on some as well.

2003: William Joseph, DT Miami (1st Round, 25th overall). Joseph never got his footing as a pro while in a Giant uniform. Billed as the next coming of Warren Sapp, Joseph was nothing near his Hurricane predecessor. Reese recovered in Round Two by taking Osi Umenyiora and later by picking up David Diehl and David Tyree.

2006: Sinorice Moss, WR Miami (2nd Round, 44th overall). Moss was a major disappointment for the Giants, only starting two games in his four seasons here catching a mere 39 passes for 421 yards and 3 TDs. Reese already had Mathias Kiwanuka in his pocket when he made this pick and would go on to redeem himself with Barry Cofield in Round Four.

2009: Clint Sintim, LB Virginia (2nd Round, 45th overall). It seems a bit unfair to bang on Sintim for his underproduction, especially since he’s had back-to-back ACL surgeries. But the fact of the matter is, he was a second-round pick who has not distinguished himself on the defense. Known for his pass-rushing ability in college, Sintim has only one sack as a pro. Reese had two second round selections in this draft (the other was used on OT Will Beatty) and could afford to waste one. Looks like he did just that.

2009: Ramses Barden, WR Cal-Poly (3rd Round, 85th overall). This year seemed to be the year Reese overextended his reach. Barden was a beast in college and was brought in to help ease the loss of Plaxico Burress. It has not happened. Not even close. Had Reese not scored with Hakeem Nicks in Round One of the this draft, people would be bashing this pick to death right now. Barden can still be salvaged, but if he doesn’t produce something this season, he will go down as a complete bust.

2010: Matt Dodge P, East Carolina (7th Round, 221st overall). I know, how can you call a 7th round pick a bust? Well, considering the time and effort the Giants put into this guy and the glowing praise they showered him with on the way in the door, it’s easy. When you factor in how much he ended up costing them in the end, you can’t ignore this pick…it’s a major hiccup in Giants draft history.

Honorable mentions: Aaron Ross, Philip Dillard, Travis Beckum, Rod Babers

Giants 2012 Dream Draft (Mock #2)

by Rich Resch on April 9th, 2012 at 9:30 am

The dream draft is a mock draft created only with players I would like to see the Giants draft.  Many of these players will probably not be available for the Giants at their corresponding pick, but each pick is within the realm of possibility. After all, not one person predicted Prince Amukamara would fall to the Giants, and most people had Marvin Austin off the board before the Giants’ second pick as well.

Last year’s dream drafts included LB Greg Jones and RB Da’Rel Scott.

Players from my first mock are ineligible.

1. TE Coby Fleener (Stanford)

The Giants will have to replace the production lost when Manningham bolted for San Francisco, but they don’t necessarily have to do it by adding another wide receiver. Fleener is an exceptional receiver, combining the size and speed (6’7, 4.77 forty) the Giants have lacked from the tight end position for some time. Together with Martellus Bennett, the Giants would have a potentially formidable one-two punch, and some huge targets for Eli Manning around the red zone. He is raw as a blocker, but coach Pope has done more with less talent. The Giants lost two tight ends in the Super Bowl, and Bennett is only signed for one year, so Fleener would be a big part of the offense this year and beyond.

2. OT Bobby Massie (Mississippi)

The hope is that guys like James Brewer and Mitch Petrus will step up, and Will Beatty will be able to stay healthy a full season. While that is possible, it’s wishful thinking, and the Giants should address the line with one of their first three picks. Massie’s stock is soaring, but if he is there for the taking, the Giants could not pass on this talent in the second round.

3. LB Bobby Wagner (Utah State)

Back-to-back, Bobby-to-Bobby! Wagner could very well be gone by the middle of the second round, but we’ve seen plenty of linebackers slip a round or two over the past few seasons.  Teams, including the Giants, are just not spending as many high picks on linebackers who are not big pass rushers.  The Giants’ defense improved astronomically with the signing of Chase Blackburn, so it is obvious that linebackers are still of some importance to this defense, even if they do like to ignore the position.

Giants’ O-Line Picture a Bit Blurry Right Now

by John Fennelly on March 26th, 2012 at 9:42 pm

Everyone is becoming increasingly concerned with the current and future state of the Giants’ offensive line. Their once-powerful rushing attack is no longer and their pass protection leaves much to be desired.

Eli Manning took 28 sacks and absorbed 72 QB hits last season, which was the 19th highest in the league. But in the postseason, he took the most sacks (11) along with the most (29) QB hits.

The line looked as if it had abandoned him in San Francisco in the NFC Championship Game and was no match for the physical style of Philadelphia and Washington late in the season.

Some changes are due, but from what we see, they will only be modest ones.

Eric Edholm of Pro Football Weekly echoes similar sentiments to the ones we recently aired in regards to what the offensive line will look like this fall….

Assuming OLT Will Beatty (eye) is fine in his return, he will start again, as he did before the injury. Kevin Boothe figures to be the left guard again, next to C David Baas and ORG Chris Snee. But right tackle remains open. The most likely candidates are Dave Diehl, the team’s jack-of-all-trades who has played several spots on the line, or 2011 fourth-rounder James Brewer. Diehl would be the safer play, as it’s not yet clear if Brewer (who barely played as a rookie) is ready for the big step up. Another option would be to bring back Tony Ugoh, a Colts castoff who has starting experience. However, you cannot rule out the Giants drafting an offensive lineman high — in fact, it’s a distinct possibility.

GM Jerry Reese pretty much confirmed his philosophy regarding the line. Part of the plan is to have Brewer “compete for some spots” even though he has never played in an NFL game.  Reese had this to say today on SiriusXM radio:

“We try to develop players. We believe in developing players. We hope he’ll (Brewer) make a step forward. David Diehl is still available for us. Will Beatty is still available for us. And our inside guys are still available. So I think we’ll have a good core of our offensive line to come back.”

Let’s hope Reese has this covered. It looks pretty shaky right now….

The 2012 New York Giants’ Draft Blueprint

by Kel Dansby on March 22nd, 2012 at 10:07 am

First Round

Yes: WR Alshon Jeffery, South Carolina. 6’5” 229

I have mocked a lot of different players to the Giants in the first round, but Jeffery will be the best player available at pick 32. Jeffery has been a top 3 NCAA receiving talent since he was a sophomore, and that was with Stephen Garcia at QB.

He has never had a QB with the talent of Eli Manning, he has never been the third option at receiver, and he has surely never faced single coverage. All of these would happen with the NY Giants.

He reportedly weighed in at 250 pounds, which is way too heavy for a receiver, but the Giants can & will get him in shape and maximize his talents.

No: DE Chandler Jones, Syracuse. 6’5” 266

The Giants love to keep the cupboard stacked at defensive end and Osi has one foot out of the door. I feel that they could get the same value in the second round at DE.

Maybe: TE Colby Fleener, Standford. 6’6” 227

The Giants did just pick up Martellus Bennett, but he isn’t an elite blocker and surely isn’t a proven commodity. Fleener is the best tight end in this draft and a two tight end system can really help the Giants’ play action/short yardage game.

Second Round

Yes: CB Jayron Hosley, Virgina Tech. 5’10” 178

Hosley is a ball hawk at the corner position. The Giants need quality depth at the position because last season showed that they are just one fluke play away from being really thin in the secondary. An added plus is that Hosley comes from V-Tech where special teams are considered a priority and he would improve all special teams units.

No: C Ben Jones, Georgia. 6’2” 303

Jones is a good young center, but I fell the Giants hang in their with David Baas. Baas has an entire offseason to get healthy and more comfortable in the system.

Maybe: WR Mohamed Sanu, Rutgers 6’2” 211

Sanu is a big target and a local product. If the Giants shy away from Jeffery in the first Sanu can provide them a legit 3rd receiver and an upgrade over the departed Mario Manningham.

Third Round

Yes: LB Vontaze Burfict, Arizona State 6’1” 248

Why not? He ran a horrible 40 time and had off the field issues, but his talent this late in the draft is a can’t miss. He was a legit top 20 talent entering the season and the Giants take a low risk / high reward pick.

No: HB LaMicheal James, Oregon. 5’8” 194

I would love to see him as a third down running back, but he isn’t the prototypical Giants player. They could sure use him as a kick returner/ punt returner though.

Maybe: DT Billy Winn, Boise State. 6’3” 300

I personally like Winn as a player because I played against him in high school and know his drive and work ethic. Winn is a Giants type of player on and off of the field. Plus the G-Men could use some depth next to Chris Canty and a second year Marvin Austin.
