Coughlin: JPP “Loves the Game”

by John Fennelly on December 14th, 2011 at 2:11 pm

Giants head coach Tom Coughlin has a lot of hard questions tossed his way every day. Today, he had a couple of hangers. The subject was JPP, the Giants’ budding star DE who was named NFC Defensive Player of the Week yesterday….

Have opposing teams been forced to look at JPP differently?
“I think specifically, yes, but I think all of our defensive ends kind of fall into that category. We’ve had that kind of attention all year long, to the people in that spot.

Has JPP exceeded expectations for his second year?
“He’s a very talented guy. He loves what he’s doing. He loves playing. You’re very, very happy to see the advancement and there’s a lot more football to be played.”

Does JPP bring a certain energy to the defense and special teams?
“He sure does. He sure brings energy. He brings all of those things. He brings positiveness, he brings solid, solid play. He brings an attitude. He loves the game.”

How do you feel, as the coach, when a guy makes an adjustment in a game that leads to a big play such as the blocked field goal?
“We all make adjustments as the game goes on. For him to see how he could be most effective when he was in fact on the shorter side, that’s a big play.”

How about his motor?
“He’s got a big motor.”

How much of what JPP is doing is brought over from the game plan?
“He’s just like everybody else. I think you’re trying to refer to him doing something other than how he was taught. No, he’s not doing that. He’s exactly where he’s supposed to be and when he’s not, he’s corrected. He’s not freelancing out there.”

With Washington rotating their left tackle, how will that change how JPP game plans since he has to prepare for two people?
“I don’t think it will. I think he’ll study both of those tackles and whichever way they choose to go, he’ll have some thoughts and his coach will have many thoughts for him.”

Tuesday Notes: JPP Gets POTW Nod; Eli Hits Milestones and “Rantrel” Rolle Strikes Again

by John Fennelly on December 13th, 2011 at 7:08 pm

Lets begin with the positive, shall we?

Giants’ DE Jason Pierre-Paul has been named NFC Defensive Player of the Week for Week 14.

JPP had two sacks, a forced fumble and a safety in Sunday night’s nationally-televised game vs Dallas. He topped off the dominant performance by blocking the potential game-tying field goal with one-second remaining, sealing a 37-34 victory which put the Giants in first place in the NFC East.

Read our feature on JPP by Greg Hanlon below

QB Eli Manning has tied Pro Football Hall of Famer Johnny Unitas (1959) and his brother Peyton (2002) for the most fourth-quarter touchdown passes in a season with 14.

Manning also passed for 400 yards in the win over Dallas, his third 400-yard game this year. Eli and Pro Football Hall of Famer Dan Marino are the only players in NFL history to have at least three 400-yard passing games in a season. Marino accomplished the feat twice, throwing for 400 yards four times in 1984 and three times in 1986.

NFL Fans Take Note: JPP Has Arrived

by GFB on December 13th, 2011 at 8:54 am

There’s only two things that’s going to keep Jason Pierre-Paul out of next month’s Pro Bowl: the Giants making it to the Super Bowl or him missing his flight to Hawaii. The kid who played about 15 minutes of football before he got to TIMEX has come a long way.

The Giants chose the raw 6’5″, 278-lb wunderkind out of South Florida with the 15th overall selection in the 2010 NFL Draft and have been patiently watching as his raw power and talent rounds out into sheer brilliance on the football field.

Our man over at CapitalNewYork.com, Greg Hanlon featured the 22-year-old DE, who excelled in the Giants’ 37-34 victory over Dallas Sunday night….

Where to begin when singing the praises of the 22-year-old whose Twitter handle is @DatBoyJPP? How about at the end, when he muscled his way past Cowboys blockers and propelled his 6-foot-5 inch frame skyward, reaching just high enough to get a hand on Dallas’ game-tying field goal attempt?

It was an emblematic moment on a night where Pierre-Paul repeatedly bailed out a disjointed Giants defense. The Cowboys scored points on six of their twelve offensive possessions last night. On the six drives on which they didn’t score points, four ended with plays by Pierre-Paul: There was his safety in the first quarter, his forced fumble in the second, his sack in the third, and the blocked field goal at the end.

The fact that Pierre-Paul is the best player on the defense has been evident all season long. He now ranks fifth in the N.F.L. with 12.5 sacks, nearly twice as many as Osi Umenyiora, who has the second-most on the Giants, with seven. And the blocked field goal was no fluke: Pierre-Paul has batted down six passes this year, tied for second in the league going into yesterday and more than more than twice as many as any other Giant.  READ FULL

Say Hello to the Bad Guy: The Fair and Balanced Reaction to JerryWorld III

by Dan Orlando on December 12th, 2011 at 11:52 pm

This morning I sat in my office; blue shirt, blue tie, tailored blue suit. A subtle but gratifying celebration. 8 hours earlier I had begun to type a eulogy for Coughlin’s tenure as Giants Head Coach. I had painted a morbid picture of Tommy paddling furiously against a vicious current. The harder he attempted to reach shore, the quicker the weight tied to his ankles pulled him out to the Atlantic. That weight of course, is Kevin Gilbride.

But as I sat at my desk and retuned this piece, I instead found myself joyously documenting a stay of execution. I considered the high level of play being provided by the offense despite the inadequacy of the coordinator. I reveled in the emergence of a rising defensive star that helped his unit reward the efforts of one of the league’s top QB talents with an outstanding special teams contribution.

Be warned, however, that despite the heat I’ve garnered in the past for not painting a PR picture and playing the role of Pat Hanlon, the following reactions from last night’s game will contain both positive and negative feedback. But I know you’ll keep reading. If you want a story that’s all smiles, buy a Disney movie (I recommend Toy Story, it has not failed to make me laugh hysterically in 16 years). For those of you brave enough, here we go…

JPP Misses Another Practice

by John Fennelly on November 4th, 2011 at 12:45 pm

Giants’ DE Jason Pierre-Paul missed practice again today, apparently due to a neck/head condition. No word on the seriousness of the situation, but with this team, it is becoming customary to presume the worst.

JPP also missed practice yesterday, in what the Giants were saying was a precautionary move. JPP is the team’s sack leader with 8.5 this season.

For JPP, Less Could End Up Being More

by John Fennelly on October 26th, 2011 at 7:52 pm

The Giants plan to curtail the amount of plays DE Jason Pierre-Paul participates in by about 20%.  They believe he gets winded and would benefit from a taking a few plays off now and then. With Justin Tuck returning, he doesn’t have much of a choice..

From Mike Vorkunov of the Star Ledger:

“He’s averaging 55, maybe 60 plays a game and he’s producing good numbers right now,” DC Perry Fewell said. “If we could reduce that to 40, 45 plays a game he could produce even better numbers because sometimes he plays slow at times. We think that’s because he’s winded.”

Pierre-Paul did not have an issue with fewer opportunities on the field: “That’s what he wants then hey,” he said today. “Me taking more snaps, don’t care. Me taking less snaps, don’t really care. Either way you still have to play the game of football.”

Listen: JPP on the FAN

by John Fennelly on October 21st, 2011 at 8:10 pm

Giants’ up-and-coming defensive star Jason Pierre-Paul (JPP to you) was on the air with Joe, Evan and Carl Banks this morning and was more candid than we’ve been accustomed to…

Incidentally, JPP was fined $10k by the NFL for his hit to the head on Buffalo QB Ryan Fitzpatrick last week….

Players To Watch: Giants Vs. Redskins

by Rich Resch on September 9th, 2011 at 2:54 pm

Yesterday, I highlighted three Redskins; today we look at the Giants.

1. Jason Pierre-Paul

Without question, this is the biggest game of Pierre-Paul’s young career. Even before Justin Tuck was listed as questionable, Pierre-Paul was to start at defensive end for the injured Osi Umenyiora. Pierre-Paul started in Osi’s place all pre-season long, and looked great in the process. But now there is a very real possibility that Tuck will miss the season opener, and Pierre-Paul will be the last of the Giants’ three dynamic pass rushers remaining. There are a lot of expectations for the kid from South Florida, and the weight on his shoulders keeps getting heavier. The legend begins this Sunday.

2. Eli Manning

“Oh yeah? The quarterback is a player to watch? Great analysis, Rich!” Okay, this may be obvious, but Eli Manning’s performance is a huge key for the Giants this week. He looked downright awful this pre-season, and there have been rumblings that he did not do as much preparation this offseason compared to some other big name quarterbacks. Whatever the reason, his timing was off; it looked like he was playing with an entirely new receiving core. Manning needs to get on the same page as guys like Hakeem Nicks and Mario Manningham, because while I expect the running game to have a big day, they can’t do it all by themselves.

3. Will Beatty

Beatty will be making his first of what the Giants hope is sixteen starts at left tackle this (regular) season. Beatty was drafted to become the heir apparent to David Diehl, and although there have been ups and downs along the way, that’s exactly where he is now. He has the physical talent to be a solid left tackle, but this weekend will be a tough first test for him, as he will have to deal with the immensely talented Brian Orakpo. With Eli Manning soon to become the NFL’s current Iron Man QB, allowing Orakpo to get a few shots at Manning is an easy way for Beatty to get in the dog house. The Giants cannot afford for Beatty to have too many growing pains this week and this season.

Jason Pierre-Paul ready to break out

by Dan Stack on August 11th, 2011 at 6:47 am

By all accounts DE Jason Pierre-Paul had a decent rookie campaign. However, when it comes to Pierre-Paul’s long term impact with the Giants, the sky remains the limit.

Drafted by the Giants with the 15th pick in the 2010 NFL Draft, there was definitely going to be a learning curve for the uber-athletic Pierre-Paul. After having only played the game for six years, Pierre-Paul had to adjust to the speed of the NFL rather quickly.

“As a rookie, you have to come in and listen to your coaches because your coaches know what’s best,” Pierre-Paul said to Giants.com “The game is going to be fast. When I came in and got extra work from the coaches on my days off, I processed all the information.”

Pierre-Paul is amped to make an even bigger impact this year. So, expect the training wheels to come off.

Time For Beatty, JPP to Shine

by Rich Resch on August 6th, 2011 at 5:16 pm

With the massive adjustments to the offensive line, William Beatty suddenly finds himself thrust into the starting left tackle position. That is to say, he’ll get the first shot to hold down the all important job in his third season.

Jason Pierre-Paul, last season’s first round pick, is expected to be a big part of the Giants’ pass rush, a unit that needs to carry the defense if the team is to be successful. But with Mathias Kiwanuka one hit from the infirmary, and Osi Umenyiora exploring trades and knee surgery, JPP could find himself in a starting role opposite Justin Tuck. Either way, he’ll need to produce.

With Beatty and Pierre-Paul being two of the top players to watch this pre-season, it’s quite convenient that you don’t even have to turn your head to watch the two battle it out in training camp. That’s because JPP and Beatty have been taking part in what CBS Sports’ Alex Raskin calls the best matchup of training camp.

“(They) have gone at it pretty much every day, and whether you have pads on or not, they compete like heck,” Coughlin said, before noting that Pierre-Paul has been “very quick off the ball.”

The fact that the matchup is competitive does not necessarily mean both players have taken the essential step forward, as both could just be equally average. But it’s certainly a good sign that two of the most important Giants players are taking their immense opportunities seriously, and it’s always nice to see a competitive edge, especially in what has been a relatively unexciting camp so far.

It wouldn’t be a total upset for both of these high draft picks to fulfill their potential this season. Without at least one of them taking that next step, it’s hard to imagine this team making the playoffs.
