Say Hello to the Bad Guy: Blue Christmas for Tommy’s Titans

by Dan Orlando on December 24th, 2011 at 10:49 am

Even the Grinch loved Christmas when all was said and done. The Bad Guy is no different. But I fear that my letter to Santa might not reach his icy domain in time. Unlike the thousands of kids across the country who had their head on straight and got a jump on the wish list writing before Thanksgiving, I did not have a gift request until earlier this week. I wished for a TE and it looks like Santa is sleeping on the job.

With Ballard officially ruled out for this afternoon’s tilt against the Jets the Giants might be caught with their red velvet pants down around their black leather boots. Even if they do suit up, both Bear Pascoe and Travis Beckum are battling injuries that have been hampering them throughout the month. They were limited in practice today.

The Jets struggle against TE’s which makes the razor thin depth chart particularly frustrating. Ordinarily, the situation would not be ideal. Compound it with the fact Mario Manningham is likely a no-go today and the Giants officially can’t get out of their own way.

Jake Ballard (85) will be sorely missed today. His presence in the passing game has far exceeded expectations. Photo Courtesy LA Times

Nicks’ Missed Opportunities Prove Costly to Giants

by John Fennelly on December 19th, 2011 at 5:27 am

Giants’ wideout Hakeem Nicks is usually a reliable receiver. Today, he wasn’t his reliable self, dropping passes letting some others get away from him. He still made some plays (five catches for 73 yards) but it’s the ones he didn’t make that has people thinking ‘what if’ today.

The Giants’ passing attack was marginalized by wind, sun and aggressive Washington defense. When asked if the Giants’ game-planned around the strong sun, Tom Coughlin said they did not.

“No, that wasn’t the number one reason. The wind was a bigger factor than that.”

Eli Manning believes the Giants should have had success in spite of Nicks’ tough day.

“That was early in the game and obviously would have been nice to have had that (Nicks’ first drop), get a touchdown or get in scoring position. But there were still other opportunities. There were a lot of opportunities in the game. We had a lot of plays in the game that could have been a lot better, could have turned out a lot better for us.”

Say Hello to the Bad Guy: The Fair and Balanced Reaction to JerryWorld III

by Dan Orlando on December 12th, 2011 at 11:52 pm

This morning I sat in my office; blue shirt, blue tie, tailored blue suit. A subtle but gratifying celebration. 8 hours earlier I had begun to type a eulogy for Coughlin’s tenure as Giants Head Coach. I had painted a morbid picture of Tommy paddling furiously against a vicious current. The harder he attempted to reach shore, the quicker the weight tied to his ankles pulled him out to the Atlantic. That weight of course, is Kevin Gilbride.

But as I sat at my desk and retuned this piece, I instead found myself joyously documenting a stay of execution. I considered the high level of play being provided by the offense despite the inadequacy of the coordinator. I reveled in the emergence of a rising defensive star that helped his unit reward the efforts of one of the league’s top QB talents with an outstanding special teams contribution.

Be warned, however, that despite the heat I’ve garnered in the past for not painting a PR picture and playing the role of Pat Hanlon, the following reactions from last night’s game will contain both positive and negative feedback. But I know you’ll keep reading. If you want a story that’s all smiles, buy a Disney movie (I recommend Toy Story, it has not failed to make me laugh hysterically in 16 years). For those of you brave enough, here we go…

Nicks Close to Returning to Field

by John Fennelly on November 10th, 2011 at 7:44 am

As spectacular as WR Hakeem Nicks had been, believe it or not, he has become just one pair of hands in group of able-bodied receivers.

He is clearly the most talented of the bunch, the group functions just fine without him, as witnessed this past Sunday in New England.

Nicks knows Eli will find the open man and use all weapons at his disposal. Their success on Sunday did not surprise him at all…

“I was confident the whole time while I was watching it. I believe in the guys and I knew we went there with a purpose and that was to get a W. We had guys who had great preparation at practice all week. I think it turned out pretty good.”

Nicks leads the team with 38 receptions this season followed by Victor Cruz (34), Mario Manningham (27), RB Ahmad Bradshaw (24) and TE Jake Ballard (23).

That is a fairly equitable distribution of the workload. But Nicks is a special player and the Giants are certainly a better team with him in the lineup.

Nicks believes if his hamstring continues to improve at this rate, he will be on the field in San Fran this weekend.

“I ran yesterday, today…still no setbacks, no pain so it’s looking good.

Straight ahead, cutting. I did a little bit of everything just to test it out and see where I’m at. By the end of the week if things are still looking good.”

With All Eyes on Fitzgerald, It’s Nicks Who Stars

by John Fennelly on October 3rd, 2011 at 7:39 am

All week we heard about the great receiver we going to witness in the Giants-Cardinals game. His name is Larry Fitzgerald and he is possibly headed to the Hall of Fame.

On the Giants’ sideline, they have superstar of their own. His name is Hakeem Nicks. Yesterday, he did what Arizona fans are accustomed to what Fitzgerald usually does.

Fitzgerald had eight catches for 102 yards, his longest a 47 yarder. Nicks caught the game-winning score: a 29-yarder from Eli Manning with under three minutes remaining. He also caught nine other passes for 133 yards.

Nicks was covered on most of his receptions. Arizona rookie Patrick Peterson and veteran safety Adrian Wilson saw to that. It wasn’t enough.

Nicks: Knee Issue is “Nothing Serious”

Link Recommended by John Fennelly on September 15th, 2011 at 8:12 am

Giants WR Hakeem Nicks is listed as questionable for the Giants’ upcoming game vs the Rams Monday night. He has bone bruise in his knee area and may not be able to go, which will be a huge loss for the Giants.

The Giants brought in veteran WR Brandon Stokely yesterday to beef up their slot receiving corps and as insurance in case Nicks cannot play this week. The Giants needed to bring in a vet anyway, but Nicks is confident he will be out there come kickoff….

Hakeem Nicks is Fine

by Rich Resch on September 12th, 2011 at 4:10 pm

Mike Garafolo passes forth some good injury news, something Giants fans are not used to these days. Hakeem Nicks, who was being evaluated for a knee injury earlier today, has a “bone bruise at worst.”

Nicks was one of the Giants’ lone bright spots yesterday, hauling in seven balls for 122 yards. The offense cannot afford to be without Nicks, so this is great news.

NY Giants Recap: Rant & Rave Week 1

by Craig Santucci on September 12th, 2011 at 1:11 pm

Where do the Giants go from here?

Because of the talent this team has(healthy & unhealthy) this team can be a 11 & 5 team. Will they be? Probably not.

Yesterday the Giants looked real bad and completely out of sync. This is a team that needed rookie camp, mini camp, training camp and most of all some key players added to the roster. All you real smart people keep reminding me that the Giants had no money. Don’t blame poor Jerry Reese. You keep telling yourself that.

Rant: If you want a better defensive results. Draft players that you need. Stop drafting the best athlete available. That philophy only gets you so far. Ross, Grant, Rolle, Kiwi have all played out of position over the last few seasons.

Rave: Bright Spot. Kenny Phillips made some nice plays yesterday and we got to see that big hitting ability we drafted him for.
