Last year, the Giants’ special teams were a rag-tag bunch that ended up costing the team dearly. That was due to the pre-season injury to the units’ everyman – Domenik Hixon – and the inconsistency of rookie punter Matt Dodge.
Those two faults have been resolved. Hixon is back and ready to roll. Dodge is in danger of being replaced by the steadier Steve Weatherford. In addition, the league voted to move up the kickoff line five yards, virtually eliminating the kickoff return as a threat. The Giants have always given up more big plays on special teams than they’ve made, so the club sees this rule change as one that favors them.
Quinn also has former Patriots and Jets’ special teams ace Larry Izzo as his new assistant, replacing Thomas McGaughey, who went back to work for LSU during the NFL lockout and stayed there.
Quinn met the media yesterday at TIMEX…

So Jerry Reese came out of the shadows to defend his vision on the Giants, even going as far as predicting a playoff run. Pretty bold stuff for a guy whose team lost a lot more than if gained the past month and must rely on his risky draft choices to step and fill those gaps.
As one of our readers, Tom, wrote me this morning: “Let’s give him a chance. Without a .625 winning percentage behind him, Reese’s certainty might come across as arrogant at best, delusional at worst. Until proven otherwise, it’s proper to believe Reese really does have a plan, and that he’s fiercely following that plan. He’s bought himself the right to feel better about this team than just about anyone else does. If he’s right, he’ll be more bulletproof than Clark Kent….If he’s wrong, he’s riding shotgun with Sonny Corleone.”
Reese said the team did offer Kevin Boss a fair deal but he chose to go with Oakland’s. Steve Smith left without giving the Giants a chance to counter. He also stated that the team has cap room if they need to bring someone in. Good, then do it….
Tom Coughlin is the one charged with managing Reese’s projects. One in particular, TE Travis Beckum, is causing him the most frustration. Coughlin said, “He needs to be on the field and working every day at this point and he can’t.” And there is no word when he will hit the field again..
Reese said Mathias Kiwanuka would be used at linebacker as kind of a “joker”. What? Why do the Giants continue to take athletes and try to jam them in spots they don’t fit? Just draft a linebacker who already has the know how…
GFB contributor Dr. Football will be interviewing Super Bowl XXV MVP Ottis Anderson today. We will have that later for you.
The Giants will be traveling down to Carolina today in preparation for to tomorrow’s preseason opener vs the Panthers, who are one of those teams trying to play catch up with a new coach – Ron Rivera. They also have top draft pick Cam Newton, who is expected to play, and dare we say : Jeremy Shockey. Now that the Panthers signed Greg Olsen, perhaps the Giants could wriggle him away …. just kidding..

We aren’t the type of site that likes to pick on people, but this Osi situation is way past the point of tolerance.
Last year, when Osi felt he was being paid a competitive salary, he played through the pain. Now, this year, he has decided that $3.1 million is too low a wage for him to risk his health.
Who are we to judge? We report, you decide.

In a surprise move, the Giants bumped up their practice time from 6:00pm to 2:00pm for the next few days as they gear up for their frist preseason game in Carolina this Saturday night.
Tom Coughlin is not pleased with the short schedule, especially with all the peripheral distractions and injuries to his team:
“Well it’s, again, 11 practices and play a game, and you like to be able to play as many people as you can. Organizationally, we are probably not as far along as you would like to be. Some of this stuff they have to pick up on the fly. Hopefully, it’s just an opportunity to go out and play, relax and play the game. We can get the maximum out of that in terms of seeing what the real football player’s like not all tied up in, oh my gosh if step with this foot, that’s what the problem is. Last year going into the first game we probably had 23 practices, or maybe 20 practices. This year we have 11…”

When the Giants released RB Andre Brown last year before the season, many felt they had seen the last of him. One year removed from a devastating Achilles injury, Brown fought hard to get back in the Giants good graces. It wasn’t enough. After the Giants released him, Brown spent time with four clubs: Denver, Indianapolis, Carolina and Washington. When the Redskins released him on July 28th, the Giants were quick to reclaim him.
This time, things may work out for Brown. Coach Tom Coughlin said today: “He’s faster. To me, he looks faster. He looks faster. I think all his issues with his legs are past and he does look, to me, he looks more explosive.”
Brown himself has admitted he is in much better condition. “I feel good. I feel healthy. I am just going out here and I am working hard. I am just getting better every day.”
“Last year I was just getting out from surgery so I felt like all I could do was run straight ahead,” Brown told reporters today. “I couldn’t make cuts like I wanted to and I am a natural jump cutter. I like to jump in and out of things but I didn’t feel that pop. During this lockout I trained really hard and it ended up being really beneficial for me because I ended up getting stronger and faster.”
Brown’s odyssey is a strange one, but he’s glad to back where he started – with the Giants.

As my peer Charles Costello previously stated, the end to the lockout seems to be on the horizon.
According to an article released earlier today by Todd Porter of Cantonrep.com all signs point towards the annual Hall of Fame game being played on August 7th. So far that is the clearest sign that the lockout may be coming to an end.
Porter quoted Hall of Fame executive director Stephen Perry saying, “We’re seeing the same (optimism) everyone else is seeing. There’s not any other detailed information, but that’s what we’re hearing.”
The NFL’s public relations department also tweeted that they were drafting a formal agreement today and were sharing it with the player’s association. This is great news for both the NFL and fans alike, but some questions remain.

Giants coach Tom Coughlin on the return of S Kenny Phillips, plus the latest on injuries and other happenings.
The coach singled out his fullback…”We’re seeing a different Madison Hedgecock out there….” Hedgecock had a bad shoulder last season and the Giants running game tailed off.
Overall, Coughlin seemed satisfied with the state of the team:
“We’re progressing according to our calendar…this week will tell us a lot…..”
