Giants-Pats Forget Ammo For Today’s Shootout

by John Fennelly on November 6th, 2011 at 5:45 pm

The Giants and Patriots just played the first scoreless first half in the NFL this season. The Pats ended the half with a nice 12-play drive that began on their own 9, but K Steven Gostkowski missed a 27-yard FG to keep the game scoreless.

In a game in which the over/under was 51 at gametime, that final drive was the only time either team was in the red zone.

Super Bowl XLII in Rearview Mirror for Most Giants and Pats

by John Fennelly on November 2nd, 2011 at 6:08 am

The Giants (5-2) and Patriots (5-2) will play this Sunday for the first time in a game that counts since Super Bowl XLII in Glendale, Ariz.

The teams meet annually in the final preseason game, but this will be the first time that it means something since the title game.

“It’s a new year,” said Pro Bowl guard Chris Snee, who was one of 14 players on the Giants’ 54-man roster who suited up for the title game. “There has been a lot of turnover on both teams. It doesn’t make any sense to think about a game four years ago.”

“Good Eli” Arrives Just in Time to Haunt Patriots

by John Fennelly on November 1st, 2011 at 6:25 am

The New England Patriots are probably sitting around right now wishing the drew the Giants last season instead of this one. Last year, there was a good possibility Giant QB Eli Manning could hand them a game by turning the ball over. This year, they are more likely to see the Eli that shivved them in Super Bowl XLII.

The Patriots are the worst bunch in the league at defensing the pass, surrendering 323 yards per game (the only team in the league over 300) and only averaging two sacks per game. They are not very advantageous when to comes to takeaways, either. They are a modest +2 on the year although they do have nine interceptions. Either way, they have a Manning coming to town and not much in their shed to stop him.

From SNY Giants insider Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger:

Through seven games, he’s thrown for 2,127 yards, 13 touchdowns and five interceptions. He’s on pace to smash his single-season best of 4,021 yards by 840, has a career-high 64.7 percent completion rate and is averaging 8.8 yards per attempt — almost a full yard better than his previous best.

“Just his confidence, man,” (WR Victor) Cruz said when asked what has impressed him most about Manning. “It seems almost effortless.”

Said coach Tom Coughlin: “I would say he’s controlled. He’s obviously very aware of situations and circumstances. The poise and confidence, the accuracy and the knowledge with all the studying that he does, the way that he performs is by knowing the opponent. He does a real good job with that and he has a lot of responsibility and he does a very good job with that.”

Final: Giants 20, Patriots 17

by John Fennelly on September 2nd, 2010 at 10:00 pm

The Giants first team looked competitive and there were more bright spots than one would have expected.

Matt Dodge both boomed and placed his punts well tonight. Jonathan Goff played an excellent game at MLB and OL Shawn Andrews played as if it were 2006.

TE Kevin Boss caught a TD from Eli Manning in the first quarter. He appears to be ready for the season.

Backup QB is still an issue, though….Rhett Bomar showed flashes, but he overthrew too many receivers in big spots, especially WR Duke Calhoun.

That was until the two hooked up with Calhoun with 1:49 remaining on a 60-yard catch and run for a TD.

Gartrell Johnson converted on the 2-point try to make the final score Giants 20, New England 17

New York Giants News and Notes For Sept 2

by John Fennelly on September 2nd, 2010 at 6:45 am

The Giants were off yesterday.  The team attended the annual Kickoff Luncheon to benefit the Hackensack University Medical Center.  Former Giants WR Amani Toomer was honored as Alumni Man of the Year for his past service and his current charitable efforts.

Here’s a quote from Amani courtesy of Mike Eisen at Giants.com…

“This award means a lot to me, because it not only means that I did a good job on the field, but it means I did a good job off the field,” Toomer said. “There is going to come a day in a player’s life when no one is really going to remember how many yards or any of the stats that you have. They’ll only remember the character of the person. For the Giants to recognize my character, not just on the field but off the field, I really appreciate that.

I’m really thankful not only to the fact that I got to play in such a wonderful city, I also played for the fans. I remember the first time that I had a record for one catch in (98) games, and then one game I didn’t catch a ball. In the next game, we played the New Orleans Saints, and when I caught a pass, the whole crowd went crazy, knowing the situation I was in before. To hear it and feel it from the stands, that’s something I’ll never forget. To all the players I say, ‘Enjoy your time.’ The years slip by really fast, so you can’t think you’re going to have all the time in the world. Because when it comes, it comes, and you have to be prepared for it. I just wanted to thank everyone for having me up here and having me back.”

Tonight the Giants will host the New England Patriots at the New Meadowlands to close out the 2010 preseason. The Giants will play some starters, but apparently, so will New England.
The Giants want all attendees to know that the parking rules for tonight have been loosened. “The Giants will allow ticket holders without parking permits to park at the Meadowlands Sports Complex for the preseason game against New England Thursday night. Fans can pay $25 at the entrance to the parking lots. This policy is only good for this game. When the regular season begins on Sept. 12, only fans with parking permits will be allowed into the lots.”
GFB will be covering tonight’s and all regular season home games directly from the press box this year. Make GFB your first stop for Giants information and updates.
