More on the Big Win in Big D

by John Fennelly on December 13th, 2011 at 7:20 am

One more day to gloat and dissect Sunday’s game. Some reactions:

“It’s just all confidence,” said WR Hakeem Nicks about his team. “Not one man in that huddle was lacking confidence. We knew what we were capable of doing. We’ve done it time after time this season. It was just a matter of getting it done. That’s what we did. We kept on believing in each other. Eli kept that confidence going strong in that huddle and guys made plays for him.”

“We always know the he is going to get it done,” DL Chris Canty said of Eli Manning. “From our side of the ball as a defense, we know that we are going to get another chance to stop them after we score. We know we are going to have to hold them or get a stop to protect the win. We pretty much know that when our offense is going down and putting a drive together the last five minutes of a ballgame, we have a pretty good shot of scoring some points.”

“Grave concern. I can’t express that any more,” said Tom Coughlin when asked if he was concerned with the secondary’s propensity for surrendering big plays. “We continue to work with it. You have technical errors. You have just physical breakdowns where one person is able in a certain way to win on a certain play over another. You have those kinds of things that happen as well, but the thing that I’m most discouraged about and disappointed is when we do have a breakdown in communication and we do have some type of a error that gives up a big play. And that should not be happening and we’re continuing to try to eliminate those things…”

The Daily News Live crew bandied about the positives and negatives of the Giants’ huuuuge win in Dallas on Sunday night.

Friday Morning Hangover: Giants’ Backups, Rookies Spoil Belichick’s Night

by John Fennelly on September 2nd, 2011 at 7:39 am

After a hectic week, the Giants can finally sit back for a few days and regroup. That group is about to get smaller beginning today when the league will ask the Giants for five names. Tomorrow, 27 more will be handing in their playbooks.

One less decision to be made will be at LB, where a position is now open as the luckless Clint Sintim was declared done for the season after blowing out his knee for the second year in a row. You may not like him as a player, but you have to feel sorry for this guy.

In his the wake of Sintim’s injury comes the emergence of two excellent young OLBs: Spencer Paysinger and Jacquian Williams.

Paysinger has just looked solid. A product of the Oregon juggernaut of 2010, it boggles the mind how this kid went undrafted. He will factor in somewhere on this Giants defense in the next few years.

Williams is just loaded with upside. If you watched last night’s game, it was hard not to notice him. The kid had seven tackles and three sacks. He is not as big as you would like at LB, but he’s much faster than anyone expected. He gets to the ball, as does rookie S Tyler Sash,’who led the Giants in tackles again last night.

Giants’ Lack of Discipline Makes a Troubling Return

by Kel Dansby on August 30th, 2011 at 8:00 am

Tom Coughlin has been criticized by many over his tenure as the head coach of the New York Giants and the defense for him was always that he was a structured coach that instilled discipline. Well the Giants showed a lack discipline all night on Monday against the Jets.

There were over five on field altercations and two personal fouls against Giants’ players. Brandon Jacobs was actually dismissed from the game. If this behavior was a new occurrence then Coughlin may earn a pass, but this is becoming more of a habit for this team.

Aside from their actions on the field players have also come out and publicly criticized him as a coach. These are no longer just former players, but active Giants such as Antrel Rolle. It seems as though Coughlin has worn out his welcome and his voice is becoming more stale by the game.

These players don’t listen to him anymore and it shows in their play. It’s time for a new face to lead this team, possibly a certain Monday Night Football analyst.

Giants KO Bears: The Hangover

by John Fennelly on August 23rd, 2011 at 7:36 am

A big win with a big downside. The Giants lost their leading tackler from last season in Terrell Thomas and a potential key contributor in CB Brian Witherspoon. He will undergo an MRI on his knee today.

Things, believe it or not, could have been worse. LT Will Beatty was limping around at halftime. The foot that kept him out for nearly two months last year appeared to be the problem. The Giants dodged a bullet. Beatty just rolled his ankle a bit….X-Rays were negative…

“The foot feels pretty good,” Beatty said. “I just playing on this turf, had the new shoes on and just not really playing out there in the off-season and all of that. Just spatting my foot up. It’s good. ”

New Rules, New Players Have ST Coach Quinn More at Ease This Season

by John Fennelly on August 12th, 2011 at 8:12 am

Last year, the Giants’ special teams were a rag-tag bunch that ended up costing the team dearly. That was due to the pre-season injury to the units’ everyman – Domenik Hixon – and the inconsistency of rookie punter Matt Dodge.

Those two faults have been resolved. Hixon is back and ready to roll. Dodge is in danger of being replaced by the steadier Steve Weatherford. In addition, the league voted to move up the kickoff line five yards, virtually eliminating the kickoff return as a threat. The Giants have always given up more big plays on special teams than they’ve made, so the club sees this rule change as one that favors them.

Quinn also has former Patriots and Jets’ special teams ace Larry Izzo as his new assistant, replacing Thomas McGaughey, who went back to work for LSU during the NFL lockout and stayed there.

Quinn met the media yesterday at TIMEX…
