Prediction: Giants Will Give Eagles a Run For Their Money

from SNY’s Why Guys….

Paul Bessire of PredictionMachine.com gives the Giants (plus-7) the cover by the slimmest of margins. This assumes that Michael Vick plays. He’ll probably start but if he gets hammered anywhere near like last year when the Giants played the Eagles, he will not be upright for long. And Vick plays a concussion-prone game, let’s be honest. And if he doesn’t, he’s not Vick now, is he.

Giants Plan to Lock Down DeSean This Time Around

by John Fennelly on September 23rd, 2011 at 7:34 am

Giants special team’s coach Tom Quinn has been on the carpet several times in his NFL coaching career, but none more notable than after the Giants’ meltdown vs Philadelphia last Dec 19. If you recall, that was when the Eagles’ DeSean Jackson took a Matt Dodge punt and raced past the coverage to daylight, sealing a record-setting comeback and burying the Giants’ season.

What went wrong on that play? Quinn says just about everything…..

“The snap, the punt, and the coverage. It was very poor tackling. It was a poor punt and the snap didn’t help. That’s my job to have the snap where it’s supposed to be and the punt where it’s supposed to be and the coverage where it’s supposed to be.”

How tough is it for him to watch the play now?

“You see it all over the place. It sucks, pardon my expression, you see it, but it does. It’s a tough way to have a game end.”

Fewell Has to Stay Real if Giants Are to Slow Eagles Down

by John Fennelly on September 23rd, 2011 at 5:48 am

We know Michael Vick is probably playing on Sunday. He’s no Mike Kafka, but he still presents a challenge. That challenge is all too prescient in the psyche of Giants’ defensive coordinator Perry Fewell, whose team was left flatfooted by the Eagles offense twice last season.

Giant fans are left to wonder what Fewell has up his sleeve this week. With a squad that is literally down to its last man, Fewell is going to have to come up with something more than faking injuries to stop Vick and Co. He spoke to reporters yesterday:

Rolle Wants Vick to Play; Wants No Excuses if Giants Win

by John Fennelly on September 21st, 2011 at 6:37 am

Giants safety Antrel Rolle was on NY radio yesterday crowing again. New Yorkers have gotten used to Rolle’s rhetoric and now take him with a grain of salt. That does not mean he should be taken lightly, not does it mean he’s not entertaining. If you cover the Giants, he’s a godsend.

Eagles’ QB Michael Vick suffered a concussion in Atlanta Sunday night and is questionable for this week’s game vs the Giants.

“I don’t want any excuses when we go down there and put it to ‘em….I’ve handled DeSean Jackson one-on-one before and I don’t see why I wouldn’t be able to do it again.’’

Giants OL Chris Snee was a bit more tactful in his comments:

“I don’t think anybody in here is scared of Michael Vick. We’re not intimidated or afraid. You hate to see anybody get hurt. You always want to take their best shot. Hopefully, he’s out there. I just hope he’s okay. We don’t want to get caught up in who’s playing and who’s not.”

Giants Still A Step Behind

by John Fennelly on December 14th, 2009 at 8:01 am

Big Blue Learns That “Speed Kills” The Hard Way

You could say last night was DeSean Jackson‘s Deion Sanders moment.  He flew past the Giants as if it were a non-contact drill. He does that to a lot of teams. He hasn’t been healthy recently. I guess its safe to say he’s recovered.

The Giants had done all they could to keep up with the fleet, opportunistic Philadelphia Eagles last night, but at all times seemed to be a step behind.

Even when they pulled ahead 31-30 in the third quarter, any football mind worth his salt knew that this was only temporary.  The Giants defense – even with their fastest options on the field – were no match for the Eagles’ quicksilver receivers and their unfettered quarterback, Donovan McNabb.

I do not understand why they play the schemes they do on defense. It seems the more field they have behind them, the more vulnerable they are.

My observations and notes from last night…….

The Eagles defense better play tighter than they did last night or they will be exiting the playoffs early this year….they had a sloppy night tackling……

The Giants actually won this slugfest to the naked eye…the Eagles just landed more big punches. The Giants held the ball for almost 35 minutes to the Eagles’ 25 and ran 72 plays to the Eagles’ 53.

Like I’ve been saying, its a big-play league and the Giants shot themselves in the foot several times:

Brandon Jacobs‘ fumble that resulted in a 60-yard TD for Philadelphia….not much he could have done, but that play ended up being the margin of victory…..

Eli Manning‘s fumble on the Eagles’ 29 that killed a drive…just a bad case of not taking care of the football

Mario Manningham’s two catches in the corner of the end zone that were ruled out of bounds…he needs to learn where he is on the field or we don’t need him……

The defense not picking up McNabb’s “fumble” after Osi Umenyiora stripped him……the Eagles ended up driving down the field for a TD on this possession……but the Giants said they didn’t pick it up because the whistle blew and figured it was an incomplete pass (like the rest of us did)…….

The Giants racked up 500 yards of total offense for only the third time in 42 years. They had 524 vs Green Bay in 2002 and 523 vs Seattle on October 5th last year…..

Gameday: Eagles at Giants

by John Fennelly on December 13th, 2009 at 8:31 am

philadelphia-eagles-logo1The Philadelphia Eagles (8-4) come up the turnpike tonight to play the New York Giants (7-5) in a classic NFC East battle with playoff ramifications.

The Giants had previously won six of seven regular season meetings against the Eagles before Philly began a three-game winning streak against New York, including a 23-11 Divisional Playoff victory last January at the Meadowlands.

The Eagles are late-season wonders, going 12-3 in their last 15 December games.  The Giants are 7-3 in their last ten games vs division rivals.

TV: NBC 8pm. Announcers: Al Michaels, Cris Collinsworth and Andrea Kremer.

Radio: WFAN 660AM 7:30pm.  Announcers: Bob Papa, Carl Banks and Howard Cross.

Weather: Rain and wind. Temperature 35-40.

The Line: Giants by 1. Over/Under 44.

The Skinny.………..Both teams are basically healthy as compared to earlier in the season, when they both lost key players to injuries……the Eagles will be without RB Brian Westbrook (concussion), but he missed the first meeting between these two teams on Nov. 1 and the Eagles still won handily, 40-17……..the Giants will look to get more pressure on Donovan McNabb, who will have his full cadre of receivers tonight……they have won 11 straight when DE Justin Tuck has at least one sack…..McNabb and his backup, Kevin Kolb, have completed the most big plays in the league this year (15 completions of 40 yards or more)……

Notes.……the NFL has become a a league where big-strike offenses and bend-but-don’t-break defenses are the formula-du-jour…….Philadelphia, New Orleans, Indianapolis, San Diego and Minnesota are all succeeding with this once unheard of combination.  The new NFL rules to free up receivers and protect offensive players opened the door to this arena-like atmosphere.  It took the Giants 13 weeks to figure out how to take advantage, too.  They will employ multiple receiver sets on offense (pass to open up the run game) and put their fastest defensive players – not necessarily their best ones – on the field to help prevent big plays.  This sounds crazy in the NFC East in December.  Welcome to the new NFL.

Giants-Eagles: Tale of the Tape

by John Fennelly on December 12th, 2009 at 12:33 pm

Rivals Evenly Matched For Sunday Night Showdown

The Giants are favored by one point in tomorrow’s prime-time battle against the hated Philadelphia Eagles.

Many were taken aback by this, given the way the Eagles have been having their way with the Giants lately.

There is something more to this spread than meets the eye.  The Eagles may have dismantled the Giants in their first meeting, but honestly – what else have they done?

Philadelphia, like the Giants, defeated Atlanta, Tampa Bay and Kansas City and, like the Giants, lost to New Orleans and San Diego – two Super Bowl contenders.

They lost to the JaMarcus Russell-led Raiders in Oakland, barely escaped in Chicago and Washington and got throttled by Dallas, whom the Giants have beaten twice.   With those facts in mind, linesmakers have learned not to trust the Eagles.

Here is how the Giants and Eagles match up: (courtesy teamrankings.com)

Mid-Week News and Notes

by John Fennelly on December 9th, 2009 at 9:20 am

Eagles Getting Bodies Back For Stretch Run

Philly coach Andy Reid is smiling a little more these days.  It’s not just because he just signed a three-year extension, either. His team has a history of strong finishes in the regular season.  This year, the Eagles will further benefit by having some key players returning to the lineup at the right time.

Although it is not definite, Reid anticipates having WR Desean Jackson and RB Brian Westbrook available for Sunday night’s game vs the Giants in New York. Both players have missed significant time dealing with concussion-related symptoms. Reid feels this is the week they will suit up again.

He also is counting on the services of LB Akeem Jordan (knee) and nickel back Josello Hanson who missed the last month due to a league-mandated suspension after testing positive for a banned substance.

The news on T Jason Peters, however, may not be as upbeat.  Peters suffered a stinger to his neck and head against the Falcons last week and left the game.  He is being evaluated and is day-to-day.

WR Kevin Curtis, who has missed the bulk of the season with a knee injury, returned to practice this week.  It is unclear whether he will be active for Sunday’s game.

Notes

The Eagles’ website, like many others, features a preview for the upcoming game.  In the “players to watch” section, they listed Ahmad Bradshaw and C.C. Brown.  Apparently the writers are unaware that both players’ roles have been reduced greatly since the Eagles beat the Giants 40-17 in Week 8.  The names they should be familiarizing themselves with are: Mario Manningham, Clint Sintim, Aaron Ross and Michael Boley – all who either were inactive or used sparingly in that game………

The Cowboys’ Flozell Adams was fine $50k by the NFL for his cheap shot on Justin Tuck in last Sunday’s game.  Good.  Keep fining him. What officials should begin doing is throwing Adams out of games for flagrant personal fouls.….

The Giants signed CBs Vince Anderson and London Fryar to their practice squad.  Anderson was one of the Giants’ final cuts in training camp. Fryar is the son of legendary NFL receiver Irving Fryar…….

When the Giants won the Super Bowl two seasons ago, the mantra was “Talk is cheap. Play the Game.”  That slogan is back in vogue in the Meadowlands these days.  Steve Smith: “Talk is good, but you just have to go out and do it. I feel like guys aren’t really talking as much about what we want to do (against Philadelphia). I think we are just going to go show it.”…..
