From Sr Editor Rich Resch…who handles in-game analysis for GFB
First Quarter
- Big game for the Giants, as the Cowboys, Bears Lions and Falcons all won their games. The Giants need to put the Eagles down and keep pace with the other NFC playoff contenders.
- A good first drive for the defense results in a Chas Henry punt (not to be confused with their kicker, Alex Henery).
- A wide-open Jake Ballard dropped a perfect pass on 2nd and 7, and the Giants went three and out on their first drive. DeSean Jackson was then greeted by a Giants team photo on the ensuing punt.
- Prince Amukamara intercepted the first pass thrown his way, an underthrown deep ball from Vince Young intended for DeSean Jackson. Amukamara stumbled on the play, but was able to recover and pick off Young’s flat pass. Giants fans everywhere are giddy.
- Eli Manning made his first mistake of the game, lobbing a pass directly at Jamar Chaney, who caught it for the interception. Manning was blocked into the ground by two Eagles players, and a scrum ensued. Each team was penalized for unnecessary roughness.
- Chris Canty came in unblocked and tackled LeSean McCoy in the backfield on 3rd and 1 in Giants territory, forcing the punt. So far, both Quarterbacks have made mistakes, but neither have come back to haunt their teams, although field position has swung in the Eagles’ favor.
- Two penalties on the offensive line killed the Giants’ next drive, forcing another quick drive. Good thing Steve Weatherford can punt with the best of them.

Last year, when the Eagles shocked the Giants at the Meadowlands, several Eagles media people were jumping up and down in glee in the press box as DeSean Jackson backpedalled into the end zone with the clinching score.
I wonder what they were doing yesterday about 3:45 pm…? Getting ready to jump, I imagine – but off the top of the stadium this time.
This is a team that went out and signed almost every free agent with a heartbeat this summer and raised the bar as if they were the neighboring Phillies.
The Eagles pushed all their chips into the middle of the table and said: “We’re all in.” Now, they are running the risk of being all out. At 1-2 their season is far from over, buy they could not have gotten off to a worst start.
This reporter could not be more pleased. The Giants, who are literally down to their last man, went into Philly yesterday and battered the Eagles.
Is it payback for last year? To me, yes. I don’t care if people say it was due to Vick’s injury or because the Eagles coaching staff screwed up. Not my issues. It was blue helmets vs green helmets yesterday and the blue helmets came out on top. Names and faces aside.
Vick got hurt because Giants put a beating on him. He started the game with a concussion and ended it with broken hand, then had the gall to criticize the officials for not protecting him.
He should have blamed his linemen, or better yet, the Eagles’ brass for putting that porous line in front of him. The Osi-less Giants d-line whooped them when it counted.
To be truthful, Vick plays with reckless abandon. He leaves the pocket often, and as a result, turns himself into a runner. Officials view him in that light and teams consequently are able to get some extra shots in on him.
Andy Reid and Marty Morninwheg, his offensive coordinator, showed the Giants’ defense little respect. They decided to go on 4th and 1 with the score 16-14 in their favor. They got stopped. The Giants took over on downs, then drove down the field and scored. Eagles fans across the net have had enough of both of them…
Again, not my issue. The NFL is unforgiving. You can’t take anything for granted. Again, they raised the stakes and now they must live up to the expectations that go along with them.
The Giants, by having the bar lowered by injuries and misfortune could make this a fun season. Beating the Eagles gives them some juice with many of us who were ready to write them off.
Without Vick, Philly will be ordinary. If Washington beats Dallas tonight, that would make them 3-0 and one of only four undefeated team in the NFL along with Green Bay, Detroit and Buffalo, If that doesn’t tell you that this is an unconventional season, I don’t know what will…
What we liked…..no turnovers…passing the ball to the backs… Victor Cruz and Aaron Ross stepping up…JPP and Jacquian just wreaking havoc…. Linval playing very Cofield-like…Earth and Fire….
What we didn’t like: Antrel acting like he’s still at the U, no Da’Rel Scott again and also no Jernigan….some poor tackling in spots, especially on RB LeSean McCoy….

For much of their game against the Philadelphia Eagles at Lincoln Financial Field on Sunday, the New York Giants couldn’t get their defense off the field.
But, four touchdown passes by quarterback Eli Manning (including the first two career scores by wide receiver Victor Cruz) and a pair of key interceptions by cornerback Aaron Ross (one week after being benched during the second half of a New York win over St. Louis) helped the Giants to a quick start and rallied them to an even better finish during a 29-16 victory.
Injury-depleted and on the road against a team that seemingly had their number (the Eagles had won the past six meetings between the teams), the Giants were supposed to be fearful of Philadelphia’s big-play potential.
However, early on, it was New York surprising with some huge plays of its own.
After a Giants three-and-out, Eagles’ quarterback Michael Vick (16-23, 176 yards, 0 TD, 1 INT, 1 sack) was intercepted on Philadelphia’s first possession after driving the Eagles from their own territory into the Giants’ red zone. But, a short pass deflected off of the hands of ex-Giant wide receiver Steve Smith (2 catches, 27 yards) and into the arms of Ross (5 tackles, 2 INT).

Some quick hits from today’s big win down the turnpike….
“We knew we had to win the fourth quarter. This year, unlike last year, we won the last eight minutes of the game.” - QB Eli Manning, who upped his regular season record in Philadelphia to 5-2.
The secondary, which has been doubted and criticized ad nauseum, had an awesome day. The Eagles had only one pass play over 20 yards – a 24-yarder from Michael Vick to Jeremy Maclin. DeSean Jackson was thrown at six times, catching only two for a total of 30 yards.
The Giants usually dominate the time of possession in these affairs. Today, the Eagles had the ball for nearly 37 minutes to the Giants’ 23. The Eagles are also the team that usually scores on big plays. Today, it was the Giants who broke off a few: Victor Cruz on a 74-yard pass play and Brandon Jacobs on a 40 yarder.
“My compliments to the Giants,” said Eagles coach Andy Reid after the game. “They did a nice job. Obviously, we didn’t have enough big plays, and they were able to get to the quarterback too often.”
DE Jason Pierre-Paul is rising. He had nine tackles, including two sacks and several hits on Michael Vick. On one play, the Eagles triple-teamed JPP and he still got a lick on Vick….
The Giants also played a turnover-free game, not giving Philly any extra possessions. The Eagles, conversely, had three INTs and Michael Vick nearly lost a fumble after Kenny Phillips caught him from behind after he left the pocket. The ball ended up right in the hands of OL Jason Peters.
CB Aaron Ross, who assumed the punt returner duties this week after Domenik Hixon went on IR, only had one attempt today: a fair catch.
DeSean Jackson, who has bedeviled the Giants on special teams the past few seasons, also had only one attempt: he returned a deep punt by Steve Weatherford only 13 yards. Weatherford kicked his only other attempt out of bounds.
Rookie WR Jerrel Jernigan finally dressed but was the only active player besides QB David Carr not to get on the field today.
Ex-Giant WR Steve Smith caught two passes for 27 yards.
Paul Domowitch of the Philadelphia Daily News railed the Eagles coaching staff in his postgame report card:
“Andy Reid’s and Marty Mornhinweg’s goal-line play-calling left a lot to be desired. Giving the ball twice to Owen Schmitt rather than McCoy or Ronnie Brown? Those two lame pass-play calls inside the 3 after running the ball on nine of the previous 10 plays? Then there’s a defense that continues to give up big run plays, can’t tackle and gave up four touchdown passes for the second straight week. There’s a lot of blame to go around for this disgraceful loss…”

This is why they play the games. We had a feeling the Giants would show up today. The pendulum had to swing back at some point.
The Giants pounded Michael Vick in Philadelphia this afternoon and drove him from the game in the fourth quarter with a broken hand. They then took further advantage of a disorganized Eagles defense to win what many thought was an un-winnable game for them, 29-16.
It’s not total payback for last December’s Meadowlands Meltdown, but its close enough….we’ll take it.
Embattled offensive coordinator Kevin Gilbride quelled his detractors by doing a tremendous job game-planning this week and then executed it by calling a terrific game today. The Blue finally got some breakout performances from their skill players, who stepped up in clutch situations and made big plays in big spots.
QB Eli Manning threw four TD passes: two to WR Victor Cruz and one each to his running backs, Ahmad Bradshaw and Brandon Jacobs. He did not throw an INT.
Bradshaw led the club in both receptions and carries today amassing 139 total yards. Cruz scored on a 74-yard play where he broke free from coverage and sped to daylight up the left sideline. He then outmuscled All-World CB Nnamdi Asomugha on another play to snare a pass on the goal line and then break the plane for six. Jacobs scored on a 40-yard pot pass which caught the Eagles defense in a deep slumber.
The Giants’ defense bent, but did not break – again. Their short-yardage defense was on their game as they thwarted the Eagles on several key third and fourth-down plays.
Aaron Ross, who was under fire all week for his inconsistent play the first two games, answered critics with two picks and a solid game in the coverage scheme.
Rookie Jacquian Williams led the club with 9 tackles, which is no surprise to this reporter. He is a real talent. When I first saw him in training camp, he reminded me of Jesse Armstead. Today, he played a lot like Armstead.
Williams’ college teammate, Jason Pierre-Paul was also a force today. He seems to improve with each game. With seven tackles and two sacks (and uncounted QB hits at press time) he played like an All-Pro this afternoon.
The Giants jumped out to an early 14-0 lead, only to see that evaporate at the hands of the elusive Vick and the slippery RB LeSean McCoy. But the Blue hung in there. This time, they did not fold.
With the Eagles leading 16-14 in the early going of the 4th quarter, Philadelphia coach Andy Reid decided to go on a 4th and 1 on the NYG 43. McCoy was stopped three yards behind the line by LB Michael Boley and the Giants took over on downs.
More importantly, Vick was floored on the play by Giants’ DT Chris Canty and broke his non-throwing hand during the fall. He attempted to return after having x-rays taken in the locker room, but was unable to continue, giving way to inexperienced backup Mike Kafka.
The Giants then drove the ball into Eagles’ territory, which culminated in Cruz’ second TD grab of the game. Jacobs then put the Giants up by six with a two-yard run on the conversion.
When the Eagles got the ball back they inexplicably came out throwing and Kafka was picked off by Ross. The Giants then drove down the field for the game-sealing score – an 18-yard screen to Bradshaw.
The Giants, who literally limped into this game are now 2-1. The Eagles, who limped out of it, are now 1-2.

Along with DE Osi Umenyiora, WR Mario Manningham and DB Prince Amukamara, the Giants Inactives for today’s game in Philly are: OL James Brewer, OL Mitch Petrus, WR Michael Clayton and regretfully, RB Da’Rel Scott.
WR Victor Cruz will start in place of Manningham today. Michael Vick is starting at QB for Philadelphia. He was said to be wearing a helmet equipped with kevlar for extra protection, but the league was not able not clear the idea in time for today’s game.

The Giants enter their game vs the Eagles today a 9-point underdog. They usually thrive when they are big dogs, so expect a good effort from them today. Here’s why:
Eagles’ QB Michael Vick suffered a concussion in the Eagles’ loss to Atlanta last week. By all accounts, he should not be playing today. If the Giants put a serious pounding on him (and they usually do) and drive him to the bench, Roger Goodell will be ringing them up.
Vick’s health should not be put in jeopardy in Week Three - or any week – for that matter. Should he leave this game early, you can take those nine points and kick them down the sewer. The Giants will win this game if that happens.
On offense, the Giants will look to get physical. The Eagles have shown the first two weeks they are vulnerable to the run, and the Giants can certainly run the football. The Giants have nothing to lose by putting the ball in the hands of rookie Da’Rel Scott, but that can only happen if they dress him. Scott was inactive in Weeks One and Two.
