Giants-Jets: Tuesday Morning Hangover

by John Fennelly on August 17th, 2010 at 9:23 am

Well, the shine is off the apple. The new stadium has been christened and the Jets are still looking for their first victory.

I’m not rubbing it in, but the Giants hobbled into that game. The Jets had their way with the Giants for a good portion of the first half,  yet were only ahead by three on the scoreboard at halftime. They were having some execution problems. Translation: they have good players. but are not necessarily a good team.

The Jets got stonewalled in the red zone. I’m going to partly attribute those failures to the absence of RB Thomas Jones and OL Alan Faneca, who were unceremoniously cut by the Jets this spring.

The Giants were missing a ton of players, and had others playing out of position. The Jets seemed to miss their mojo, which I assume was sitting at home with Darrelle Revis. Their starters looked capable, but their backups were awful.  The Giants won the second half, 21-3.

I don’t like to say “I told you so”, but the Giants played their first game last night and their MLB was….Jonathan Goff.  Told ya….Keith Bulluck did not dress, but expect Goff to be in bounds a lot this year when the ball is snapped.

New Faces Lead Giants Over Jets

by John Fennelly on August 17th, 2010 at 7:09 am

Free Agent S Antrel Rolle and UDFA Victor Cruz’ big plays bailed the Giants out vs the Jets in what could be considered an overall flat performance.

Rolle intercepted a Mark Sanchez pass that led to the Giants’ first score and Cruz dropped some jaws with a smashing 3 TD night.

Jets Put Their Digs in the Giants Defense

by Kyle McMorrow on August 17th, 2010 at 6:36 am

The Giants won the game, but the reality of the situation is they got outplayed up and down the field in the first half.

Luckily enough for the Giants, their second unit, Victor Cruz in particular, came up big in the second half to pull off a victory that didn’t seem likely after the first thirty minutes.

But before Cruz sliced up the Jets secondary, it was Gang Green doing all the carving, most notably on offense.

It was clear after the interception, the Giants were giving the Jets receivers’ way too much respect, and second year quarterback Mark Sanchez looked like 13-year veteran Peyton Manning out there, going 13-17 with 119 yards and a touchdown.

Throughout the entire first half, the Giants secondary either gave Braylon Edwards and company too much cushion, or could just not handle the countless dig and slant routes; either way it looked troublesome for a revamped Giants secondary.

Granted, it was the first pre-season game, however a drive that lasted over eight minutes and lead to a touchdown for a team who is also seeing its first action of the new season is troubling.

Perhaps too much is being made about the poor performance in the secondary, but last season, the secondary was the main reason the Giants finished 8-8 after a 5-0 start.

If this first game was any indication of how the Giants secondary will be playing all year, then Big Blue is going to need a lot more help than Antrel Rolle and Deon Grant.

New York Giants News, Notes, Quotes, Links for Aug 17

by John Fennelly on August 17th, 2010 at 6:02 am

The Giants defeated the Jets, 31-16 on Monday night in the first-ever NFL game played in the New Meadowlands Stadium.

UDFA wideout Victor Cruz stole the show with six receptions for 145 yards and 3 TDs.

QB Eli Manning was forced out of the game with a head laceration after colliding with RB Brandon Jacobs in the backfield.  He took 12 stitches to the head. The team is not concerned about any long-term effects, but he may not be able to practice this week, meaning he’ll miss Saturday’s game vs the Steelers.

LB Chase Blackburn was carted off the field with a sprained knee. He will be examined further today.

The Giants had quite a few players inactive for the game: OLs Chris Snee (knee) and Rich Seubert (hand), WRs Steve Smith (groin), Sinorice Moss (groin) and Tim Brown (leg), CB Corey Webster (glute), S Kenny Phillips (knee,) S Michael Johnson (back), LB Keith Bulluck (knee), TEs Kevin Boss, Travis Beckum and Jake Ballard (hamstrings), and OL Kevin Boothe (PUP)
