Eli Manning: Special Player?

by Rich Resch on February 9th, 2012 at 10:00 am

I recently came across a two-month-old article on ESPN in which Pat Yasinskas listed his choices for 2011 pro bowl snubs. In some ways, this article is no longer relevant. In other ways, it’s more relevant than ever. Either way, this ridiculous statement is something I can’t help but post:

Rodgers and Brees were the obvious choices as the first two quarterbacks. But I seriously thought Carolina rookie Cam Newton had a very real chance to be the third quarterback. He’s not. Eli Manning ended up on the roster. Manning is decent, but he’s not a special player. Newton is a special player.

- Pat Yasinskas, 12/27/11

Hmm?

I have nothing against Cam Newton (or Yasisnkas, for that matter), who looks to be a budding superstar. Given his 706 rushing yards and 14 rushing touchdowns, you can argue that Newton’s regular season was more impressive than Manning’s, statistically speaking. You can argue the same thing for Tony Romo and Matthew Stafford, both of whom put up some huge numbers. But to say that Eli Manning is merely decent, while Cam Newton is special…well I don’t have to tell you how that statement looks now.

Yasinskas got his wish when Newton replaced Manning on the pro bowl roster; Manning had something more important to do. Newton threw three interceptions. Manning won his second Super Bowl MVP.

So, Mr. Yasinskas: is he a special player yet?

Whirlwind Day for Jet-Setting SB MVP Eli Manning

by John Fennelly on February 7th, 2012 at 6:05 am

Giants’ QB Eli Manning was jet-setting around yesterday. Like every SB MVP, Eli got to ride in a motorcade in the daily parade at Walt Disney World before heading to New York where he was David Letterman’s featured guest.

Eli talks to the folks at Walt Disney World

According to the New York Post, Eli was delayed in getting to the New York taping, so Letterman warmed up the audience a bit….

“Just minutes ago, he landed by helicopter on the West Side. He’s racing here,” Letterman said.

While waiting for his guest, Letterman poked fun at Manning’s two-time Super Bowl rival quarterback, the Patriots’ Tom Brady.

“How about that Tom Brady?” Letterman said in his monologue. “He was so inconsolable he could barely touch his Bundchen.”

Eli is the Last Man(ning) Standing

by John Fennelly on February 5th, 2012 at 10:55 pm

Peyton Manning won many a game at Lucas Oil stadium, but it is his little brother Eli that will go down as having won the biggest.

The Giants – the team that couldn’t finish the past three seasons, finished with a bang tonight, taking down the New England Patriots, 21-17, in Super Bowl XLVI.

Eli brought the Giants back from eight points down in the second half, adding another chapter to his “cool under pressure” legacy.

“I would not rather have anyone else,” WR Hakeem Nicks said of Eli. “He’s the best quarterback in the league.”

Tonight, in Peyton’s house, Eli out-dueled Tom Brady for the second time this season on the biggest stage in sports.

Case closed. Eli is the new king.

What Makes Eli Elite?

by GFB on February 2nd, 2012 at 11:06 am

Giants’ QB Eli Manning has certainly cemented his place among the very best in the NFL with his stellar play this season.  What is it about the 30-year-old Manning that make him elite? His toughness.

From PFT’s Gregg Rosenthal….

Eli Manning took the shotgun snap late in in the NFL Championship, hoping for more fourth quarter magic. Sensing pressure from his right, Manning slid to the left.

His primary read was covered. His secondary read was covered. Manning continued to drift and drift outside the pocket, but he knew his time was running out. The third read was covered. The fourth read was covered.

Finally, he saw running back Ahmad Bradshaw leaking out of the backfield and heading down the sideline. Manning waited until the last possible instant, releasing the ball just before he was hit in the back by three 49ers defenders. Bradshaw caught the ball for a 30-yard gain.

Eli Manning is not the quarterback you think he is. He’s not Michael Vick, but he makes plays with his legs. He buys time. He’s at his best under pressure — figuratively and literally. He completes passes most quarterbacks don’t attempt. He welcomes contact. He always gets up.

Say Hello to the Bad Guy: Legacy Look Back Pt. 1

by Dan Orlando on February 1st, 2012 at 5:19 pm

Millions of people around the world have identical plans for Sunday evening. While the majority of them settle in for just another annual viewing of The Super Bowl, Giants fans will have the special privilege of actually watching their own team compete in the legendary contest.

Missing a drive to go on a beer run will not be an option this year for those that read this blog. But as I did last week, I once again ask: Why? What makes Giants Football so enthralling? What makes this 2nd Super Bowl appearance in 4 years so special?

In my view, you are only 1/2 a fan if you don’t understand how your team got to the point it did. The successes and failures of the past seasons weave the story that makes every down, every play, and every minute of Big Blue action unmissable.  So for the next 3 days, I will be breaking down the Giants millennium thus far in 4 year installments. Enjoy.

2000: The Giants started the first season of the new millennium with a revival of the throwback uniforms worn before the modern era.  The new look, which featured a solid blue home jersey and a lower case “ny” logo instead of “GIANTS” spelled out on the helmet, was accompanied by the removal of the neon green astro turf that coated the Meadowlands field.  Giants Stadium was once again home to natural grass turf.

The neon green artificial turf that covered Giants Stadium in the 1990's was retired in 2000 as part of the organization's campaign to return to its roots. Photo Courtesy: NFLTeamHistory.com

But the old school vibe was designed to help inspire a new attitude and direction for the storied organization.  After wading through a purgatory of mediocrity throughout the majority of the 1990’s, the Giants front office was determined to restore a winning tradition to one of the league’s most iconic franchises.

Citing Disdain for Brady, Indy Rallies Behind Eli

by Jon Wagner on February 1st, 2012 at 7:55 am

Between 2003 and 2009, Indianapolis Colts fans watched their team produce an NFL-record seven straight seasons with at least twelve regular season victories, a Super Bowl victory, two Super Bowl appearances, three conference title game appearances, and four league MVP’s for future hall of fame quarterback Peyton Manning.

The second of those two Super Bowl visits came just two years ago, and although the 12-win streak ended last season, the Colts still made the playoffs for a ninth consecutive season.

So, it was a pretty safe bet that when the National Football League named Indianapolis as the host city for this year’s Super Bowl, the Colts would have more than a decent chance at becoming the first NFL team to play a Super Bowl in their own stadium.

Especially, when Manning was the NFL’s reining iron man with 227 straight starts.

That’s when Manning’s debilitating neck injury caused him to miss the entire season this year, and the Colts suddenly plunged to a record of 2-14 (tied for the worst mark in the league), their poorest season in two decades, when Manning was still honing his skills at the high school level in his native New Orleans.

Yet, with their season up in smoke, and with their hated rival and Manning’s little brother arriving in their city for Super Bowl XLVI, resourceful Colts fans had a backup plan – support another Manning.
