Diehl Will Move Back to LT

by John Fennelly on November 26th, 2011 at 8:41 am

SNY Insider Mike Garafolo is reporting that David Diehl will be moving back to left tackle to fill the void left by Will Beatty, who had surgery Thursday to repair a detached retina and is out indefinitely:

Tom Coughlin wouldn’t confirm whether Diehl or Stacy Andrews would be the Giants’ left tackle against the New Orleans Saints, but it will be Diehl, with (Kevin) Boothe taking over at left guard.

“(The coaches) actually said that it wasn’t 100 per cent. I’ve been playing reps,” Diehl said. “It’s nothing guaranteed. I’ve been taking reps at tackle and at guard. In my career I’ve been a guy who’s moved positions and I’m a guy who can play multiple positions.”

There is no drop off in this new lineup. Diehl is a better tackle than Beatty at this point, and Boothe has been getting quite a few reps at guard the past two seasons.

“I’ll be 100 percent ready to go,” Diehl assured. “I know the protections, I know the run plays, I study the personnel, I study the Saints like I normally do. You watch both guys (the tackle and end) anyway.”

Diehl played left tackle from 2007-10 and was part of the offensive line combination that set an NFL record for consecutive starts. This new alignment will the fifth different one the team will employ this season.

The Giants are determined not get embarrassed by the high-powered Saints this Monday. They just had a letdown and are not about to have another one. Diehl described the state of the team…

“Obviously everybody is disappointed. I think as a group, as an offensive line group, when you’re challenged, we’re going to step up and make it happen. We had two days off. Guys were in here watching film. Guys were in here lifting. It was actually good to see everybody in that little pissed-off attitude, getting ready to get back on the field. Since we’ve started, since we prepared this week, guys are fired up. Guys are flying around on the practice field. Guys are holding each other accountable. I know this, I know that we’re going to go out and fight on Monday night.”
