Reynaud Impressing At Receiver

by Rich Resch on August 10th, 2011 at 6:38 pm

Multiple observers have praised Darius Reynaud’s performance in camp thus far. Last season’s disappointing kick returner and fourth-string running back has been practicing as a receiver this pre-season and the reports have been consistently positive.

The latest quote comes from CBS Sports’ Alex Raskin:

WR/KR/PR Darius Reynaud is continuing his impressive camp. He caught a bomb from QBSage Rosenfels for a TD, and even though he stands just 5-9, Reynaud has been effective catching passes along the sideline.

Reynaud has a tough road ahead of him to even make the roster, and his small stature won’t help him. Hakeem Nicks, Mario Manningham and Jerrel Jernigan are all locks to make the roster, and Domenik Hixon, Victor Cruz and Ramses Barden are all likely ahead of Reynaud. He could be battling the likes of Michael Clayton, Devin Thomas and Duke Calhoun for one roster spot, and that’s before we try to figure out where Steve Smith factors in to the equation.

Reynaud will need to impress in pre-season games, so he’ll be one to watch this Saturday.

Reynaud Pulls Hamstring…Expects to Play

by Dan Orlando on November 5th, 2010 at 1:43 pm

Darius Reynaud pulled his hamstring at practice today during a kick return. Despite the setback, he told reporters that he intends to play Sunday .

Coach Coughlin has yet to officially declare Will Blackmon the KR/PR but this injury would likely expedite that process. It is hard to imagine that the Giants would take Reynaud across the country today just to return kicks with a bad hammy.

It is worth noting that a (likely minor) hamstring injury placed fan-favorite Victor Cruz on IR. One could assume that a disappointing Reynaud is in danger of a similar fate.

The Giants will be forced to make a roster move shortly if they intend to keep Kevin Boothe.

Bruce Johnson put on IR, Alex Hall Claimed

by Dan Orlando on November 1st, 2010 at 5:31 pm

For those of you wondering if the Giants would pick up Randy Moss, (kidding of course) wonder no more. The Giants did have an open slot today after placing CB Bruce Johnson on IR, but opted to nab young DE Alex Hall instead.

Johnson, made a splash as a rookie in 2009, pick-6ing Tony Romo in the Week 2 Sunday Night Showdown. Johnson suffered a slight demotion in 2010 upon the return of a healthy Aaron Ross. His season is now over following knee surgery.

Hall, as you might remember, was with the Giants in camp this summer. I am a bit surprised that the Giants opted to add him instead of a running back, receiver, or DB. A popular topic this summer was the crowded DE situation and though Kiwanuka has been lost, the four men tandem rounded out by Dave Tollefson has been enjoying great success. It did not seem like a project DE was a pressing concern.

It is worth noting that Darius Reynaud is still on the roster despite the addition of Will Blackmon. Blackmon, who is also a reserve corner will likely see time filling in for Johnson since rookies D.J. Johnson and Brandon Jackson are rarely both active for games.

Reynaud, however, could be out the door shortly if the Giants decide to shore up another position or activate Kevin Boothe.

The Boothe move in my opinion is a long shot. With Will Beatty reportedly on track to return, it is unlikely the Giants will retain 11 active offensive lineman (with Boothe being the 11th).

More Speculation For Your Bye Week Blues

by Dan Orlando on October 28th, 2010 at 7:04 pm

Reuben Droughns (22) was a key reserve RB for the Giants during the 2007 season. He contributions were so crucial that the Giants kept him on as a 5th RB in 2008. Photo Courtesy NYDailyNews

It would seem that Kevin Booth has a chance to dodge IR if he can stay off the training room table and in the practice field trenches.

Kiwanuka’s trip to IR has spared KR Darius Reynaud…for now. The Giants now have until WEEK 9 to decide if they want to hang on to the mending Boothe (a stalwart reser

ve from the 2007 Super Bowl run) ,keep OL Jamon Meredith around, or cut Reynaud and hang on to both.

My prediction? Boothe is placed on IR while Reynaud is released after Will Blackmon upstages him in Seattle. I still don’t feel comfortable without a 4th running back despite the fact D.J. Ware never sees a carry. Just some food for bye week thought.

Read: Reese, Coughlin on Trade

by John Fennelly on September 4th, 2010 at 3:35 pm

Our colleague at Inside Football, Pat Traina provides the organization’ s take on the newest Giants…

“Sage gives us a solid veteran backup quarterback in every way,” said Giants GM Jerry Reese said. “If need be, he can go in and win games. He will provide a very good support system and sounding board for Eli in the film room and on the sideline on game day.”

“Darius is a young man that we’ve had our eye on for a while,” Coughlin said. “He is a guy who has versatility – punt returner, kickoff returner, gunner, covers kicks – he can play on all those teams. He’s also been a wide receiver and he’s been a running back. He’ll learn to be a receiver so he can help you out in an emergency situation. He can learn two or three running plays and help you out there as well.”
