From our colleague Greg Hanlon at Capital New York, who featured Giants’ DL Chris Canty this week:
“It’s about the muscles, man,” Canty confirmed, with ironic mock-cockiness. “See, a lot of people don’t think I have big arms. But I gotta tell people, ‘I’m long, but my arms are bigger than you think.’ So you gotta watch out: I’ll challenge most guys in the bicep game. I’m in the weight room four times a week. The East Rutherford Gun Club.”
Like the rest of his teammates, Canty was in a giddy, playful mood after the game. Elsewhere in the locker room, players were shouting reminders to each other to watch “60 Minutes” for a segment on Mark Herzlich, a rookie linebacker and survivor of Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare form of bone cancer. “Herrrrrrzzzzzzzz!!!!!!” a handful of Giants bellowed in response to the reminders.

WFAN’s Joe Benigno and Evan Roberts broadcasted this afternoon from the Timex Perfomance Center in East Rutherford, the site of Giants training camp. Plenty of Giants stopped by to talk to the hosts, who were filling in for the vacationing Mike Francesa. Click on the player’s name below to listen to each interview:

From the New York Post:
“[The labor dispute] will definitely be settled. There will be a football season,” Giants defensive tackle Chris Canty said yesterday at the 18th annual Gridiron Gala at the Waldorf-Astoria in Manhattan, where he and Jets fullback Tony Richardson received awards for their commitment to community service.
“The fans don’t have to worry about that,” Canty added. “We’re going to have football this fall, and we’re going to try and put the quality product on the field that they are used to seeing come September.”

Giants’ defensive tackle Chris Canty worked out at the team’s practice facility today on the first day of the temporary end to the league’s lockout. Canty met with Tom Coughlin and some of the Giants’ assistant coaches, and was joined by teammates Mario Manningham and Brandon Jacobs.

Michael Vick can scare you. DeSean Jackson can beat you. But Jeremy Maclin…No. If the New York Giants are to win the battle for supremacy of the NFC East the Giants need to slow down Michael Vick and shut down and frustrate DeSean Jackson.
Is this business as usual for the Giants defense? The answer should be…No. If they come out of the tunnel with the attitude they did against the Cowboys they will have their butts handed to them. Maclin is a very smart receiver; however, he can not take over a game and has not displayed the ability to carry a team by himself.
When is the last time the Giants stopped Jackson, the Philadelphia Eagles 2008 second round draft pick. Don’t hurt your brain because the answer is never. The Giants are still searching for a way to stop DeSean Jackson.
So what is Big Blue to do? Double Jackson with a nickel & corner, if that doesn’t work, bump and run with help over the top. Jackson should be so exhausted after the game Sunday night that his team should have to pour him into the team bus when sending him home.
If Jackson has 6 catches or more…it’s gonna be a long day!
As far as Vick…give him a taste of his own medicine and “release the hounds!” Fewell should have Tuck, Canty, Cofield, JPP and Osi stunting all day. They also need to run corner and safety blitzes to keep Vick uncomfortable.

Can you believe it?
Sports Illustrated’s Peter King has predicted the New York Giants to win the NFC East with a 11 & 4 record.
His reasoning for the prediction…a combination between the “NASCAR” defensive scheme where all four defensive down lineman are pash rushing ends(Tuck, Kiwi, Osi, JPP), Perry Fewell’s ability to call a defense similar to the great Steve Spagnuolo and a healthy Chris Canty.
Yes, Chris Canty. He believes that if the New York Giants could get production from Chris Canty for 16 games the NY Giants would make a major impact in the NFC and win the division. He still has the Green Bay Packers going to the Super Bowl; however, Peter is predicting a bounce back year for big blue.
Peter also sited the 2007 New York Giants that were coming off a terible 2006 year at 8 & 8, which was good for 3rd in the division. Currently, this team is flying belowe the radar. If they can get healthy there maybe some magic left.

The Giants have a slew of new free agents this year, so I decided I’d contact David Quinn from Cowboysgab.com to see if I can get a little more insight into new acquisition Chris Canty. Here’s what he had to say.
Schneider: Last year, Canty only put up 37 tackles and 3.0 sacks..which are not the most staggering numbers. Is there something about Canty’s play that the numbers don’t say which make him a solid player?
Quinn: Although the numbers don’t seem very impressive, he made some big plays during his time here and had 5 blocked passes. He seemed to struggle in the 3-4 though and wasn’t happy with his contract situation here.
Schneider: Being fairly young at 26, do you think we still haven’t seen the best of what Canty can do, or is that the reason the Cowboys kind of let him go. (the big contract the Giants offered couldn’t have helped
Quinn: I feel it was just the money, the Cowboys have some other DL’s and didn’t seem to want to invest much more in him but he is young which is definitely a plus.
Schneider: With that question, do you think Canty is worth all the money the Giants threw at him?
Quinn: Maybe is all I can truthfully say. He is a good player, young, and could become a dominant player. Perhaps the money will be the big incentive he needs.
Schneider: As you may know, the Giants have a pretty decent amount of viable players, both at the DT and DE positions, Is Chris the type of guy that would work well in rotations and potentially not be the starter?
Quinn: Yes, definitely. He did well his first two seasons sharing time at DE with Greg Ellis and before the Cowboys went to a 3-4. I think DE is his best position and having some plays off (rotating) keeps him fresher.
Schneider: Where do you think Canty plays better, on the end or at the tackle position?
Quinn: As I stated above, DE definitely. He is an OK DT, but better off the end.
Schneider: and lastly, just a quick summation of any strengths/weaknesses/off the field issues you know about as a Cowboy reporter/fan/supporter you would like to share.
Quinn: His main strengths are his size and strength, obviously. His weakness may be speed off the ball and I don’t know of any off the field problems with him since he’s been in Dallas. Just before he was drafted he did get injured in a bar fight that resulted in a detached eye retina but he wasn’t charged for anything and maintained that he was just an innocent spectator. He seemed to have fully recovered from it and an injured knee during his senior year in college.

Senior NFL analyst for Scout.com, Scott Thompson has an exclusive interview with new Giants DT Chris Canty.
when asked how he himself will help to make this Giant Defense better, he responded:
“I think there’s definitely opportunity for me to provide some interior pressure that will compliment the things that the linebackers can do and that’ll also help out those edge-rusher guys that’ll give them the opportunity to get more one-on-ones out on the edge. And hopefully that translates into a dominating defensive front.”
