Michael Vick can scare you. DeSean Jackson can beat you. But Jeremy Maclin…No. If the New York Giants are to win the battle for supremacy of the NFC East the Giants need to slow down Michael Vick and shut down and frustrate DeSean Jackson.
Is this business as usual for the Giants defense? The answer should be…No. If they come out of the tunnel with the attitude they did against the Cowboys they will have their butts handed to them. Maclin is a very smart receiver; however, he can not take over a game and has not displayed the ability to carry a team by himself.
When is the last time the Giants stopped Jackson, the Philadelphia Eagles 2008 second round draft pick. Don’t hurt your brain because the answer is never. The Giants are still searching for a way to stop DeSean Jackson.
So what is Big Blue to do? Double Jackson with a nickel & corner, if that doesn’t work, bump and run with help over the top. Jackson should be so exhausted after the game Sunday night that his team should have to pour him into the team bus when sending him home.
If Jackson has 6 catches or more…it’s gonna be a long day!
As far as Vick…give him a taste of his own medicine and “release the hounds!” Fewell should have Tuck, Canty, Cofield, JPP and Osi stunting all day. They also need to run corner and safety blitzes to keep Vick uncomfortable.

In the Daily News, Ralph Vacchiano has a piece about the resurgence of defensive tackle Barry Cofield.
Hakeem Nicks is featured in Steve Serby’s Q&A in the New York Post.
Also in the Post, Serby talks about how much Ahmad Bradshaw is respected by his teammates.

Nice sack by Mathias Kiwanuka in deep red zone play but if you look closely, the sack was set up by a blown play. Barry Cofield had a wide open shot at a square hit on Ben Rothlisberger but bit on a pump fake and turned up field. Kiwanuka didn’t bite.

Injury Issues of 2009 Spilling Over Into This Season
Two years ago two key players for the New York Giants had off season knee surgery. Fred Robbins and Barry Cofield both went under the knife during the off season to repair torn up knee ligaments and to no surprise…they had terrible
seasons.
Thinking back upon the players injuries, the press reported these surgeries as common place and routine as drinking Gatorade on the sidelines; however, when there production slipped and there reliability was in doubt…the questions came fast and furious.
Now June 2010 and the New York Giants are only weeks away from Camp Coughlin, and I question why some of the key players(Boss) on the team are having “Off Season” surgery so late in the game and what is Gilbride’s plan to run the ball when all 3 starting running backs(Bradshaw, Jacobs, and Brown) have had recent surgery.
What is to be expected when these players don’t perform to the highest level.
1. Kevin Boss – May 23rd Ankle Surgery. Why wait 5 months from the end of the ’09 season to have this done? Boss is an intricate part of the NY Giants offense and will now be shelved for 6 weeks. This will certainly put the players conditioning in jeopardy as well as a “lack of timing” between Manning and Boss. The same “lack of timing” Eli used to complain about when missing Pro Bowl Tight End Jeremy Shockey.
Boss is in a contract year and needs to have a break out season to offer the NY Giants offense more fire power, especially with the recent drought from the running game.
2. Ahmad Bradshaw – foot and ankle surgery. Bradshaw has had 3 off season surgeries where screws were inserted into each foot to act like an extra bone strengthening the outer edge of his feet. The Giants tend to feel that Bradshaw’s bow-legged running style puts pressure on the outer bones of each foot. Bradshaw also had irritating bone spurs removed from his right ankle.
Once again, can No.44 be counted on to carry the ball 12 times a game after 3 foot and ankle surgeries? Will he ever be the “change of pace” running back they NY Giants so desire and what about his conditioning when he has been unable to run for 6 months.
3. Brandon Jacobs – underwent arthroscopic surgery in January to repair a torn meniscus that haunted him throughout the 2009 season. The surgery was considered a “clean up” and should not be considered anything that will hold back the running back from a bounce back year. My question is when did this injury take place, because the big brash back was “tip toeing” through the line from the first snap of 2009 season.
Running Back and its overall production will be a position under fire for most part of the 2010 season.
4. Kevin Boothe – The backup offensive lineman will be out for 4 months after tearing a pectoral muscle in late May while working out during the team’s organized team activities. Boothe was dependable player, stepping in for injured lineman at different time through out the season.
With the pounding O-lineman take, Boothe will be missed; however, this will open the door for rookie Mitch Petrus to step in when needed. Petrus was a 5th round selection from Arkansas. Boothe will likely miss most of training camp due to the injury, which will make it hard for Boothe to make the team due to this recent set back.

Cofield, Kiwanuka Looking Forward to Future Paydays
ps….either ESPN needs to hire taller cameramen or the Giants need to draft shorter defensive linemen…

So how good is the Giants second round draft pick, Linval “The Anvil” Joseph? The Giants must have thought pretty highly of the young defensive tackle from East Carolina if veteran DT, Barry Cofield became trade worthy.
Similar to the safety situation of 2009, The Giants are very thin at Defensive Tackle and putting Barry Cofield out there to the point where the New Orleans Saints and the Giants agreed to send Cofield to “The Big Easy” in exchange for the Saints’ second-round pick in 2010 has me scrathing my head.
The talks only fell apart because the Saints’ contract offer to Cofield wasn’t even close to what he wanted otherwise Mr. Cofield would have been wearing black & gold this season. Loosing Fred Robbins was disappointing because he was a fan favorite; however, understandable because of his age and his recent knee surgery, but loosing Cofield just doesn’t make sense.
Without Cofield, the Giants would have started the season with Canty, Alford, and Benard as their experienced starting three. That my fellow Giants fans is sorry. Canty, who accepted a huge payday to come to the Giants in 2009 was non-existent all year and rumors of him being soft, so far ring true.
Alford is coming off knee surgery and his production and health are yet to be measured. Rocky Bernard…well, the 8 year veteran from Texas A&M looked out of shape last season and produced only sparingly in limited playing time. If you’re looking for a bright side…he couldn’t play any worse than he did in 2009.
Outside of that…the Giants are bringing two “rookie” defensive tackles, Collins(Virginia) and Hendricks(Miami) to camp to join second round draft pick, Linval Joseph.
The ’09 season was a terrible showcase for the Giants defense. Rookie Defensive Coordinator Bill Sheridan was a disaster, MLB Antonio Pierce aged before our eyes, safety James Butler left for St, Louis, Osi Umenyiora all but disappeared and former first round draft pick, Kenny Philips had a season ending knee injury. And lets not forget the CC Brown/Arron Rouse experiment.
Yes, the trade offer fell through but I have to ask, “What is Jerry Reese thinking?”. We need the big boys upfront.

in a report from Jason La Canfora on NFL.com, the Giants and Saints were reportedly in discussion involving DT Barry Cofield. Reportedly, the trade involved a day two draft pick, which would’ve meant a 2nd or 3rd rounder.
The talks got to a point where the Saints actually spoke to the DT. Discussions pretty much came to a halt when the Saints and Cofield couldn’t work out a long-term extension.
I’m glad the Giants didn’t make this move. Assuming no other moves would’ve been made, Bernard and Canty would’ve been our starting DT’s. I don’t like that at all. I guess there’s also the possibility that Coughlin’s considering having Tuck play the inside a little bit again. Or maybe, we just have a tremendous amount of confidence in the new guy Linval Joseph.
If this move was made, the Giants would have joined a number of other teams who traded or cut quality veteran players on a day where their position was drafted. Oakland drafted McClain, and in turn traded a quality ILB in Kirk Morrison. The Jets drafted Vlad Ducasse and then cut Faneca. The Jags…drafted Mr. Tyson “reach” Alualu, and then got rid of their most veteran locker room guy John Henderson.
I’d include the Washington/Joe McNight situation too, but you could kinda see where they’re coming from in getting rid of the injured Washington.
I don’t get it. Why not keep these studs on your team and let them teach the new guys the tricks of the trade. There’s no doubt Ducasse or McClain would’ve only benefited long-term from playing with (or behind) guys like Morrison and Faneca.
Regardless, with the talk of the Giants being interested in John Henderson, and the drafting of the DT Joseph, it seems that it may be sooner than later that Cofield’s on another roster.
Henderson is already scheduled for visits with the Chiefs on Wednesday, and soon after, the New York football Giants.
