Tom Coughlin has been criticized by many over his tenure as the head coach of the New York Giants and the defense for him was always that he was a structured coach that instilled discipline. Well the Giants showed a lack discipline all night on Monday against the Jets.
There were over five on field altercations and two personal fouls against Giants’ players. Brandon Jacobs was actually dismissed from the game. If this behavior was a new occurrence then Coughlin may earn a pass, but this is becoming more of a habit for this team.
Aside from their actions on the field players have also come out and publicly criticized him as a coach. These are no longer just former players, but active Giants such as Antrel Rolle. It seems as though Coughlin has worn out his welcome and his voice is becoming more stale by the game.
These players don’t listen to him anymore and it shows in their play. It’s time for a new face to lead this team, possibly a certain Monday Night Football analyst.

Antrel Rolle expects to be the Giants’ nickel corner this season, according to Zach Berman’s tweet.
Well, that’s one way to fill the hole left by Terrell Thomas’ injury. Rolle at nickel back could be a short-lived experiment, as he’s been primarily a safety since being drafted as a corner out of Miami.
It’s a worth a try though, as it would give the Giants some flexibility if he is able to make a smooth transition. I assume Deon Grant would slide into the vacated safety slot opposite Kenny Phillips in nickel situations.

I know what you’re going to ask…..why would the Giants’ move Antrel Rolle, who made the Pro Bowl at safety last year, to cornerback?
Well, many reasons. They don’t have enough depth at corner right now and may need Rolle to fill in at some point. He currently is taking reps at corner as well as safety in practice and – you never know – they may need him there at some juncture this season.
The way cornerbacks are dropping on this roster, the Giants need to explore all options and that appears to be what they are doing. The signing of Brian Williams will help depth-wise, but the 32-year-old cannot be expected to face-off against the Dez Bryants, Santana Mosses and DeSean Jacksons of the world. The Giants need a better player to do that and Rolle may be the one they call on.
The Giants do not feel comfortable even after signing Williams. Their depth chart at CB after Aaron Ross and Corey Webster is littered with inexperienced players. Until they get Prince Amukamara back in late October, the Giants will have Webster, Ross, Williams, Michael Coe, Joe Burnett and Darnell Burks as their corners. In this pass-happy league we live in, that is not going to cut it.
Unless the Giants want to bring in another veteran – someone in the line of a Lito Sheppard – who worked out for the Giants along with Williams, or Dre’ Bly who was here last year for a tryout, the Giants will throw Coe or one of the others into the mix.
Coe appears to be ready for the challenge. He was drafted by the Colts in 2007, but blew out his knee and missed all of 2008. He likes the way DC Perry Fewell uses the corners in the defense and feels he can succeed, especially now that he is getting more reps in game situations.
“We play a lot of man-to-man, which is what I played at Arkansas,” Coe told reporters yesterday. “We do a lot of pressing. When I went to Alabama State for my last year we did the same thing. Me being a taller (6’0″, 185lb), faster corner, those are the things I do well and feel comfortable doing.”
If he can’t, Rolle will be there to pick up the slack. Who will fill in at safety for Rolle in those situations? Deon Grant, for one. Or even rookie Tyler Sash if he is ready. One thing at a time, folks…

According to Mike Garafolo, Antrel Rolle and Corey Webster, not just Brandon Jacobs, had their contracts restructured this offseason.
Well that should quiet some of the complaints that Jerry Reese wasn’t doing enough to get players to restructure their contracts.
Garafolo is not sure when this occurred, but theorizes that it must have been before August 4, as they were able to practice, unlike Jacobs. Garafolo also suggests that the Giants are now $3.5 million under the cap.
By the way, some people have complained that Eli Manning should show some “leadership” and restructure his contract…this is not going to happen. If Manning restructures his contract, he has to miss some practice time, which would obviously hurt the team more than it would help at this point.

The dreams of Nnamdi Asomughaare are probably just dreams and no one knows if Prince can start right out of the gate?
Why should Giant fans have so many questions. Johnathan Joseph is ready to play. Send him a check.
9 interceptions in the last two years and averages over 55 tackles a year. He has a reputation has a tough player who can also ball hawk. With this move you could put a young, fast guy on the corner…moving Thomas back to the inside as the nickel where he flourishes.
Perry Fewell plays a ton of 5 db’s because Thomas or Rolle can play in the box or run with receivers.
Signing Joseph will also give Prince Amukamara, the Giants 1st round draft pick some one to compete with. They both share some of the same attributes; ball hawk, sound fundamental tackler, good hips movement when turning and running in space with receivers.
The Bengals still want him. Maybe the Giants should want him more.

Giants S Kenny Phillips has been named the team’s Ed Block Courage Award recipient for 2010.
In some ways, 2010 was a remarkable season for Phillips, one of the biggest question marks heading into the year. Coming off major knee surgery that many figured would be career-altering, if not career-threatening, Phillips made it all the way through, playing 16 games at safety for the Giants.
“It’s a blessing to get through the season healthy, especially when there were people saying I wasn’t going to play football again,” Phillips said. “I thought it was a big achievement.”

SNY contributor Mike Garafolo of the Star-Ledger writes today that all is well between Giants’ defensive captain Justin Tuck and outspoken Pro Bowl safety Antrel Rolle….
“Everyone has an opinion and everyone has a right to voice it. But in the whole scheme of the matter, I don’t agree with it,” Tuck said.
“Maybe I would if I was coming from Arizona (as a free agent last spring) like he did. He’s coming into a completely different dimension. The Giants organization does things completely different than Arizona.
“Was he right to voice it? Sure. Do I agree with everything he says? Not at all.”

The Pro Bowl is back in Hawaii this year after last year’s ill-fated experiment to play it in the Super Bowl host city the week before the Super Bowl.
The NFL’s version of their All-Star game had been played in Honolulu from 1980-2009 and had become a tradition of sorts. Both fans and players were not pleased with the site change.
Last year’s game, played in Miami the week before the Super Bowl, was sparsely attended. The league will continue to hold the game the Sunday in-between the conference championships and the Super Bowl as opposed to the week after the Super Bowl.
Many players, team personnel and execs are happy to be back in Honolulu, where they can mix business and pleasure. One player said, ” I can always go to Florida.”
From the Giants perspective, they have four players representing them at the game. On offense, G Chris Snee will start. LB Zak DeOssie will be the long snapper. On defense, Antrel Rolle will start at free safety and Justin Tuck will be a reserve at defensive end.
C Shaun O’Hara was voted to the Pro Bowl, but he is in the midst of having several surgical procedures this off-season and was replaced by Carolina’s Ryan Kalil.
Atlanta’s Mike Smith is the head coach for the NFC squad, while Bill Bellichick guides the AFC stars. Kickoff is tonight at 7pm ET on FOX.

The Giants deserved to get booed off the field after a lackluster first half Sunday that saw them trail the Jaguars 17-6 in a crucial game.
Just don’t expect Antrel Rolle to agree with that. Speaking in his weekly interview on WFAN, Rolle said he was upset with the booing.
The Daily News’ Ralph Vacchiano has the story:
“You don’t boo your team,” Rolle said. “This is your home team. We’re out there playing. We’re out there pouring our heart out for our team and for our fans. You don’t boo your team. I don’t care what the situation is. You don’t boo your team.
“You know, we’re 7-4. We’re not 2-10, you know?” he continued. “There’s going to be ups and downs during the season. (Not) under any circumstances should you boo your team. That’s just the reality of it.”
Of course, the reality also is that Rolle, who signed a five-year, $37 million contract with the Giants in March, didn’t have to pay as much as $20,000 for a Personal Seat License and up to $700 for a ticket to what was initially shaping up as an awful performance. And awful is how Rolle described the first half in an interview with the Daily News on Monday when he praised Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora for stepping up with powerful halftime speeches and for “not accepting mediocrity.
“And that’s exactly what we were giving out there on the field,” Rolle told the News. “I don’t even think we were giving that much, to be honest with you. Those guys saw the lack of enthusiasm themselves. They saw a lack of intensity within the team.”
Tuck, in fact, was so infuriated he threw his helmet on the sidelines and littered his halftime speech with expletives, according to teammates.
But at least he didn’t yell “Boo!”
“I don’t like it. I don’t like it one bit,” Rolle said of the booing. “We’re not going to always have those dominant, blowout games. We’re not going to win each and every game. We need (the fans) to have confidence as we have confidence in ourselves.”
