Ross Cleared to Practice

by John Fennelly on January 11th, 2012 at 12:48 pm

CB Aaron Ross was cleared to play by the medical staff after passing the standard battery of tests required of all suspected concussion victims.

He was out on the practice field today and showed no ill effects from his collision with teammate Jason Pierre-Paul last Sunday. Ross left the game with what was thought to be a concussion and was replaced by Prince Amukamara.

RB DJ Ware was also knocked out of the WildCard game vs Atlanta. Unlike Ross, he has not been cleared to practice. He is day-to-day.

Also not practicing today: LB Mark Herzlich (ankle) and RB Ahmad Bradshaw (foot).

Aaron Ross Not Willing To Play Safety

by Rich Resch on August 1st, 2011 at 4:44 pm

According to Mike Garafolo of NJ.com, Aaron Ross is unwilling to play safety this season.

“I’m not willing to do safety anymore,” Ross said. “Wouldn’t entertain it.”

Ross has been played at safety in the past, to uneven results. With the drafting of Prince Amukamara, the Giants are very deep at cornerback.  However, Deon Grant is a free agent, so the Giants could use some more depth at safety.

Word out of camp is that Perry Fewell expects Kenny Phillips to take a huge step forward in his second full year after recovering from knee surgery, so hopefully the need for a third safety will not be as great as last year.

Perhaps Reese and Coughlin will become tired of players like Ross calling the shots and trade the underperforming, often-injured former first round pick for a player that better fits the direction of the team. Ross is a free agent after the 2011 season.

New York Giants: Round 1 – A Prince Comes to Town

by Craig Santucci on April 29th, 2011 at 12:49 am

The draft can unfold in many unique ways.   Everyone was sure that at pick No. 19 the Giants would go Offensive lineman due to the fact that all the “skill players” would be long gone that fit the Giants system.

Enter…Prince Amukamara

In a very unlikely situation 4 QB’s were drafted in the first round altering many draft boards across the NFL.

How can anyone argue with this pick?   Surprised…yes, but that”s the way the NFL Draft can be. Prince Amukamara is very good corner.   He was rated the No. 2 corner in the draft and was thought to be drafted in the first 10 picks.  He can be a shut down corner in the NFC East and plays tough against the run and the pass.

This Nebraska corner stands at 6 feet tall and 206 lbs and can play safety if asked.  With the Giants drafting another corner in the first round this is likely the end to the often injured Aaron Ross.

Prince brings some desperately needed speed at corner as he ran a 4.43 40 at the combine and could possibly challenge Terrell Thomas for a starting position.

For any reason he doesn’t win the starting corner back spot out of camp, look for the Prince to play in the Nickel or Dime package.  Over all this is a fantastic pick…however; he’ll have to change his jersey number from 21 to….

Reflecting Back On the 2007 NFL Draft: Giants Select Ross Over Beason

by John Fennelly on January 31st, 2011 at 10:22 am

2007 was a defining year for the New York Giants. They came away from the NFL Draft with eight players, all of whom would make the team and contribute to the Super Bowl run later that season.

Giants CB Aaron Ross

But in reviewing that draft here in 2011, I can’t help but catching myself on the glaring error the Giants may have made in the first round.

At the time, the Giants had Antonio Pierce at MLB and were not looking to daft an heir apparent to him. In retrospect, maybe they should have. At the time, though, it may not have been wise.

Pierce was signed to a five-year, $26 million dollar deal that would make him a Giant through 2009. He played well for the Giants, and fans have no regrets over his Giant career other than it was cut short by a neck injury.

That does not change the fact that they passed on Miami LB Jon Beason with the 20th pick to take Texas CB Aaron Ross in Round One. (Beason was taken five slots later by Carolina).

Three Key Players: Giants

by Rich Resch on September 17th, 2010 at 2:42 pm

If the Giants want to take down Peyton and the Colts, these three players will need to step up.

1. Ahmad Bradshaw

The stat that stuck out the most to me from Houston’s week 1 win over the Colts was that the Colts allowed 257 yards on the ground.  Undrafted Arian Foster piled up 231 yards and 3 touchdowns on 33 carries, good for 7 yards a carry.  If Bradshaw, Jacobs and the Giants’ rushing game are not able to put up significant yardage, we will learn a lot about the state of the Giants’ offensive line.

2. Aaron Ross

This one is a little tricky, because while Ross is expected to play Sunday night’s game, we just don’t know how his foot will fair. Whether or not Ross is able to play at full speed could be a determining factor.  Last week, Peyton Manning completed 40 of 57 passes for 433 yards, 3 touchdowns and no interceptions.  He is known to spread the ball around and look for mismatches in the defense; both Austin Collie and Dallas Clark had 11 receptions, and Reggie Wayne, Joseph Addai and Pierre Garcon chipped in with a combined 16 receptions for 171 yards.  If Ross is not in the game, Peyton will pick on Bruce Johnson or whatever other mismatch he identifies.

3. Justin Tuck

The Giants’ defensive line finally got it going against the Panthers in the second half, registering 4 sacks.  Osi Umenyiora and Mathias Kiwanuka both looked in top form, wreaking havoc on Matt Moore.  But curiously missing from the stat sheet was Justin Tuck, who failed to record a sack.  That’s not to say he had a bad game; he almost had Jimmy Clausen wrapped up in the end zone for a safety, but he let him get away.  With Tuck fully healthy, it’s time for him to dominate like he did in Super Bowl 42, as Peyton Manning will pick apart any defense if given time.

Ross Likely Among the 8 Players Sitting Out

by Dan Orlando on September 12th, 2010 at 7:29 am

Aaron Ross insists that he can suit up this afternoon, but don’t count on that happening.

After spending nearly the entire 2009 season on the sidelines thanks to a nagging hamstring injury, Ross is now battling plantar faciitis.  Both he and the team claim that he has made progress since the onset of the ailment and he has even been practicing quite consistently.

However, Coach Coughlin acknowledged Friday that Ross isn’t completely healed just yet and bringing him back at 95% might just set him back to 0.

2010 shouldn’t be another washout for Ross, but don’t expect his comeback campaign to start until at least Week 2.

Aaron Ross Injury May Help A Long Shot D-Back, But Hurt An Unrelated Offensive Player

by Dan Orlando on August 23rd, 2010 at 8:33 pm

If you’ve been paying attention over the past two days, you
are well aware of the mounting injuries infesting the Giants locker room.  The injuries are hampering nearly every
position group and with September fast approaching, the Giants front office has a mess on its hands.

In a matter of days, the organization will be forced to finalize the 53 man roster and thus compile a rough depth chart.  The injury to Aaron Ross, cripples the team.

Ross is suffering from plantar fasciitis, the same injury Eli Manning played through (successfully) a year ago.  Unfortunately, Manning is far from a scrambling
QB and while it may have been tough to fight through, Manning never had to truly test his injured foot.

Ross depends on his feet to play all three of the positions that the Giants are counting on him for (cornerback, reserve safety,
returner).  If Ross needs to miss significant time because his injury precludes him from cutting or running at a fast enough speed,
the Giants will lose another multi-use player of value.

GM Reese Wants To See More Out Of “CWEB” This Year

by Craig Santucci on August 23rd, 2010 at 6:57 am

NY Giants cornerback, Corey Webster is very good cornerback. In fact, since 2007 he has been one of the more productive corners in the NFC.  However, I guess I missed the story written by Matt Mosley regarding a challenge from NY Giants G.M. Jerry Reese toward Giants cornerback, Corey Webster.

“He’s got to be the guy we paid,” said Reese. “He’s got some play-making ability. He’s got to keep it between his ears, keep it right in his head.”

“He’s got all the tools to be a really great corner. But he’s got to get it in his head, ‘I’m a great corner and I can play against anybody.’ When he falls short sometimes, I think he has a mental lapse in his head about something.”

Now I understand this material is now 13 days old but I would like to take this time to support Corey Webster.

Steelers 24, Giants 17: Post Game Review And Reaction

by Dan Orlando on August 21st, 2010 at 9:45 pm

A 7 point loss?…we’ll take it.  This was no ordinary game for the Giants.  No the game didn’t count.  However, meaningless or not, the Giants found themselves with their back to the wall in the early month of August.

A 24-17 defeat is not exactly disappointing when you consider the circumstances.  New York played the entire game with a third string QB.  How many times have you witnessed a third string QB even play a series at the pro level, let alone an entire game?

That said, here’s what we learned:

-Rhett Bomar had an oppurtunity to solidify a roster spot and perhaps the nod for immediate backup to Manning.  He struggled tonight and despite some good plays, including an impressive deep toss to Steve Smith in tight coverage, Bomar did not play up to par.  He seemed to struggle more agasint Pittsburgh’s reserve players and was unable to keep a critical pass to Tim Brown in bounds on the final drive.  In a regular season game, his play would be unnaceptable.

I still expect a veteran QB to be brought in after final cuts.  The Giants waited on two major free agent signings this year (Keith Bulluck and ShawnAndrews).  Just because they didn’t look to make a deal this week, don’t overlook the possiblity of a veteran presence being added.

Even if Jim Sorgi is healthy by Week 1, the fact remains that he is a veteran with very limited “hands on” experience.  Bomar is a young player with very little experience period.

If Kerry Collins is cut by the Titans, the Giants will likely be interested.

-Victur Cruz was unable to match his explosive first game.  His single catch for 10 yards coupled with his botched punt returns likely didn’t wow the coaching staff.  He’s a work in progress but he is probably still in good shape roster wise.

Sinorice Moss was barely used tonight (if at all).  Regadless of Moss, Cruz has shown the same amount if not more potential that Moss has in a fifth of the time.  The Giants want to see what the young man can do.  There is no sense in cutting him, only to see him wind up with another team as a main offensive weapon (see Ryan Grant, Packers 2007).

There are two other threats to Cruz’s claim for the final WR spot. Rutgers alum Tim Brown had a nice catch towards the end of the game.  Unfortunately, that catch came on the same throw mentioned earlier by Bomar.  The ball sailed too close to the sidelines for anyone to haul in with both feet in.  Brown is likely headed to the practice squad.  His main selling point this training camp was his return game prowess.  He hasn’t been used thus far in a game situation as a return man though.  The Giants like him and if he clears waivers they’ll have an oppurtunity to keep him.

Travis Beckum is also an indirect challenge to Cruz’s spot.  Beckum is techinically a TE.  However, he has promise as a slot receiver.  He also showe some nice blocking ability tonight. despite being undersized.  If the Giants choose to bring in 3 true TE’s and Beckum, Cruz might run into problems.  This isn’t likely though.  Scott Chandler isn’t making noise.

-DJ Ware was carted off the field waving and smiling to the fans.  In all seriousness, that may have been because he was completely out of it.  The Giants confirmed that Ware did in fact suffer anotehr concussion tonight.  Ware makes Sinorice Moss looks like a pictures of health.  He simply can’t stay off the injury report.  For this reason, and the fact that he has now suffered multiple concussions, the Giants may have to part ways with him (or at least place him on IR).  Aaron Ross’s big return tonight could help him solidify a return job, which would lessen the need for Ware on the roster. That said, Ross may see time as a starter this year and at the very least he’d be the nickel corner.  Andre Brown will have to nail down the other return job for the Giants to feel comfortable.

-The defensive line made a statement on the opening drives.  Justin Tuck and Osi Umenyiora had a good night and made plays in the backfield.  Chris Canty got decent pressure, as did Rocky Bernard. Bernard helped the Giants escape the first half with a goal line stand when he laid on top of the Steeler ball carrier an extra few seconds to keep the click winding down to 0:00.

Interestingly enough, Jay Alford entered the game after Linval Joseph.  It would appear that the Orange, NJ native is now 5th on the depth chart at DT.  Jason Pierre-Paul flashed potential tonight, but left the crowd wanting more.  He let a sure sack slip through his grasp.

-Kenny Phillips and Keith Bulluck played 1 series during the first half.  Bulluck, making his Giants debut was in on a tackle deep in the redzone.  Phillips looked good after nearly a year away.  The Giants hope that both him and Antrel Rolle become a staple tandem in the backfield for years to come.  Both players have enormous potential and both players are from the legendary U.

Ross Re-injures Hamstring

by John Fennelly on December 18th, 2009 at 4:31 pm

rossCB Aaron Ross, who missed the first nine weeks with a left hamstring injury, re-injured himself yesterday and is now listed as day-to-day.

With Corey Webster‘s (knee) status for Monday’s game in Washington day-to-day as well, Ross’ injury puts a severe strain on an already embattled unit.

Terrell Thomas will continue to start at one corner and Kevin Dockery would draw the start opposite him if Ross or Webster cannot go.

This is bad news, obviously, for the Giants.  They will now have to resort back to using Aaron Rouse, C.C. Brown and Bruce Johnson in certain coverage situations where they have had issues all year.
