Tom Coughlin found it difficult to sugar-coat his team getting trapped by the road-challenged Seahawks today….
“We played poorly. When you don’t deserve to win you don’t win. We didn’t compliment each other at all today. We had done that last week and I felt good about the end of the game – the way all three phases helped out – but this week, the sloppiness of the game, the turnovers.
You’re not going to win football games when you’re handing people the ball, point blank range or whatever. So our woes continue with the rushing game, we didn’t stop the run. You know, we put ourselves in position to win; as a matter of fact, twice at the end of the game with taking the lead, then they came down and took the lead back, and then we drove down and then the interception at the end when we could have gone ahead with under two minutes to go.
Poor performance, that’s my fault, we didn’t play well. As a matter of fact, I thought we settled down and actually had felt like we were going to do some good things in the second half, but had some three and outs which slowed us down right away offensively, and then got back into the turnovers. Victor Cruz made a couple of great plays, but they weren’t enough.”

Tom Coughlin had little to say in his daily presser. Justin Tuck (groin) and Hakeem Nicks (knee) did not practice.
Coughlin revealed that Zak DeOssie had a back issue, He also intimated that Osi may play in Tuck’s place should Tuck not be able to go.
Re: Zak DeOssie
A: Just his back. Back’s fine.
Q: His back has been an on and off thing?
A: Probably will continue to be from time to time.

Giants head coach Tom Coughlin was in a chatty mood today after his makeshift club disposed of the Eagles yesterday by 13 points on the road.
“Good Afternoon. The thing that impressed me on the tape after we looked at the game this morning was the fact that I thought all three phases of our team, whether it be offense, defense, or special teams, played in harmony with one another again. We had the three turnovers and we didn’t commit a turnover.”
“Our special teams did a good job although we were not able to completely keep the ball away from DeSean but we did a pretty good job with that. Of course, the play at the end of the game where they jumped offside helped us immensely just to keep the ball and keep the clock running. I liked our approach.”

Tom Coughlin updated reporters today on the injuries sustained by WRs Mario Manningham and Domenik Hixon during last night’s victory over St. Louis:
“As far as I know, all of the tests, all of the protocol for a concussion are being conducted today, right now. He (Manningham) was much clearer when he left the stadium last night. He was much more bright-eyed this morning when he was in, but nevertheless, he’s going through the entire battery of tests that are part of the protocol for someone who leaves the game with any type of head injury. We’ll wait and see what the doctors have to say today when he finishes his exam.”
On Hixon, who will undergo an MRI on his knee:
“He’s going to have all of the tests done in regard with his knee as well. I don’t have any information at this point in time, but he too is going to be completely checked out.”
On if the Giants are being too cautious with Hixon:
“No, I don’t think we’re extra cautious. Do I get involved in the conversations? Yes. Am I overruled by the medical people? Certainly I am. That’s just the nature of the business. We want the players, but there is a fine line. Dom came out after the half, he loosened up. He tried to go. There was still some look in his eye as to the discomfort factor and the lack of true feeling as if things were normal. That was when he came off of the field and the decision was made that he should not return”.
Coughlin said the team would wait to hear the results of the tests before considering bringing in another receiver.
On whether DE Osi Umenyiora will play this week:
“We certainly hope to see that Osi will be ready to go. We hope to have him on the practice field. Tomorrow is not going to be a full speed practice. It will probably be Thursday before that takes place but hopefully Thursday Osi will be ready to practice. If there is not a setback, then I would expect that.”
On if he wants to see Michael Vick play this week vs his team:
“I think that if Michael Vick can play, then he will play.”

Tom Coughlin faced the music again today to answer questions about his team’s shortcomings in yesterday’s loss to Washington. He also has to deal with another potential crippling injury: Hakeem Nicks’ knee…
“Good afternoon, I’m disappointed, as to be expected, in the loss. We took a long hard look at the tape and the players took a look at the tape as well. There is not enough execution. There is not enough good things going on. You look at the offense and an 85-yard drive that was very good but why aren’t there more of those? Why isn’t there more consistency? You look at our third down, one out of 10, and that’s keeping us from having the ball and keeping the other people on the sidelines and without having them have opportunities to score. You look at our special teams and we average 13.5 on punt returns, which is a good thing, but we have a field goal blocked. The ball doesn’t rise higher than about six or six and a half feet. There was penetration but that would not have been a factor if the ball would have been elevated the way it should be.

Tom Coughlin has been coaching football for four decades. He knows what he is talking about. In his postgame presser last night, he decided not get too analytical and bash his already bashed-in team.
He said he “liked the effort”. He’s gotta be lying. The Giants were as lifeless as we’ve ever seen. The effort was just not there. They were beaten up and down the field by a team that will be on the outside looking in come January…..
“Up until halftime it was a very, very good and competitive football game. To start the second half off with an interception and touchdown…that’s a tough way to start the second half. We were battling even then, to be in a position to kick the field goal and have the field goal blocked – which were contributing factors there as well – that was extremely disappointing and that very well may have changed the complexion of the game completely there. The penalty in the drive, which, there’s no one touching the receiver – he can get up and run and he can do whatever he wants – then in comes a defender flying and, I guess, they called helmet-to-helmet. That’s a very difficult call for me, but the penalty contributed to that. I did not like the end of our game offensively at all. We didn’t move, we looked disorganized, we took a delay-of-game [penalty] again – that was totally unacceptable there. It’s our first game, I liked their effort. I had no problem with that at all. But the execution, particularly the offensive execution, and the ability to defend the pass off of play action was disappointing.”

Here is Tom Coughlin’s media session from earlier today …
Q: How is Justin Tuck?
A: Tuck practiced limited but he practiced. He moved around pretty good so we will see.
Q: Did he improve from yesterday?
A: I am sure he was still cautious but he went out and played. We were in shells so it was a lot of hand to hand contact but that was about it. He did go out and he did practice and he did run around. He took his snaps.

Tom Coughlin met with the media today, head held high. He will not be using injuries as an excuse should his team falter in 2011.
On Jonathan Goff’s injury….
“We are all greatly shocked and disappointed about the loss of Jon Goff. Jon has worked his tail off and put himself in position to be our starting middle backer. He has been an outstanding learner and individual and he has done a great job with all the calls and checks and all those things throughout the preseason. We saw the knees bang together and for intents and purposes, the first initial report was that is was a stable knee and it wasn’t that way. We re-group and accept the challenge. We look at it as another form of adversity and on we go. You are going to ask me who it is and we will be looking at a couple things today.”
On rookie MLB Greg Jones…
“He has been here all preseason and he is a good football player. If not, he wouldn’t be here. He has had a good preseason himself. Sometimes it is just time to step it up.”
On if he was letting all the injuries get to him…
” I’m not going to allow myself to have that sense. It is unfortunate but it is our game. It is unfortunate that these guys have gone down. There is no question that there are a number of defensive players that have gone down. There are a number of defensive players that we were counting on that are not going to be with us and you can’t hide that fact. We have what we have and we are going forward with it.”
