Giants Release Names of Recent Signees

by John Fennelly on January 14th, 2011 at 5:36 am

The signing of players you’re reading about behind the scenes these days are to reserve/futures contracts.  They will not officially be added to the team’s roster until March.

Yesterday the team released the names of all of the players they plan on bringing in…..

QB Ryan Perrilloux, DB Joe Burnett, DB Cary Harris, RB Martell Mallet, OL Ikechuku Ndukwe, DE Ayanga Okpokowuruk and WR Todd Watkins.

These are in addition to the six players they inked earlier off their practice squad: Sam Giguere, Jim Cordle, Dwayne Hendricks, Charles Scott, Woody Turenne and Kenny Ingram.

Perrllioux is an interesting prospect. His career has gone from LSU to Jacksonville St to the Hartford Colonials of the UFL. He was considered a draftable talent in last year’s draft, but teams had issues with his past discipline problems. Those days are behind him from what we are told…

Giants Sign Three Players to Futures Contracts

by John Fennelly on January 12th, 2011 at 8:20 am

from SNY collaborator Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger….

The Giants have signed three more players to reserve/future contracts for the 2011 season: RB Martell Mallett, OL Ike Ndukwe and DE Ayanga Okpokowuruk.

Mallett was with the Eagles in camp last season. He rushed for 60 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries in the preseason opener before gaining only 37 yards on his final 12 attempts of the preseason. He was briefly on the team’s practice squad before being released. He was later on the Browns‘ practice squad for two months and returned to the Eagles’ practice squad for the postseason.

Ndukwe, a former undrafted free agent who started 15 games for the Dolphins in 2008, worked out for the Giants in October.

Okpokowuruk signed with the Giants last year as an undrafted free agent. He was waived before the start of camp but signed to the practice squad in December to replace QB Rhett Bomar.

The Giants have now signed 11 players to reserve/future deals since the end of last season.

What is a reserve/future contract? Funny you should ask…..

Players signed to “reserve/future” contracts means they are being signed for the 2011 season even though that season does not officially begin until March. Only players who were not on any NFL team’s active roster when the 2010 season ended are eligible for such signings; if they were under contract, then they would remain so until March. Players who were on practice squads at the end of the season are eligible to sign with any team.

Perry Fewell Transcript 12.30

by John Fennelly on December 31st, 2010 at 9:44 am

In the their last five quarters of football, the Giants’ defense looked a lot like last year’s Bill Sheridan version. If you are the Giants, that is the last thing you want to appear to be.

DC Perry Fewell, who once was perceived as a savior, is suddenly being viewed through different glasses this week. Since the Eagles meltdown, he’s had a ton of explaining to do, some of which was revealed in his media session yesterday…..

Blackmon Latest Giant Placed On IR

by John Fennelly on December 30th, 2010 at 12:15 pm

CB Will Blackmon (knee) was placed on injured reserve today by the Giants. He joins 12 of his teammates on the season-ending list.

Blackmon signed with the Blue on Oct 28 and played five games, mainly as a special teamer.  He averaged 6.7 YPR on 14 punts and 18.3 yds per return on 13 kickoff returns.

Coming in to take Blackmon’s spot on the roster is CB/PR Brian Witherspoon, an undrafted player in 2008 out of little Stillman College in Alabama.

Witherspoon has spent time on the rosters of the Panthers, Lions and Jaguars predominantly as a returner.

In 2008, as a rookie for Jacksonville, Witherspoon had 52 kickoff attempts for 1250 yards – a 24 yard average.

Giants Roster Moves

by John Fennelly on December 16th, 2010 at 7:02 pm

The Giants placed WR Steve Smith on IR today.  Smith will have surgery on his knee Tuesday at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan. His recovery period is expected to be anywhere between 6-9 months.

Smith’s roster spot will be assumed by TE Jake Ballard, who was signed from the practice squad today.  Ballard will wear jersey # 48.

Ballard’s practice squad spot was back-filled with DB Ben Hannula, who just finished a season with the Hartford Colonials of the UFL.

Read: Tom Coughlin Wednesday Presser

by John Fennelly on December 15th, 2010 at 3:05 pm

When Tom Coughlin met the media today, he didn’t have a lot of good news but he kept his best foot forward. Injuries are chipping away at the Giants’ depth. Since the season began, the team has placed a total of eleven players on Injured Reserve. WR Steve Smith will make an even dozen this week…

When asked about his thoughts on Philadelphia WR DeSean Jackson, Coughlin was quick to reply….

“You’re trying to ruin breakfast and lunch?”

Sintim to IR; DE Hall Re-signed

by John Fennelly on December 15th, 2010 at 11:09 am

LB Clint Sintim was officially placed on IR today by the Giants.  Sintim suffered a a tear to his ACL during a special teams play in Monday’s victory over the Vikings.

The team has brought back DE Alex Hall to fill Sintim’s roster spot. This will be third stint for Hall on the Giants roster this season.

He was waived by the Giants in training camp and signed by the Arizona Cardinals in mid-Sept.  Arizona dropped him on Oct 30th. The Giants brought Hall back on Nov 1st to replace CB Bruce Johnson (who was placed on IR), only to cut him loose again on the 27th to make room for CB Michael Coe.

Giants Waive DE Hall; Sign CB Coe From Practice Squad

by John Fennelly on November 27th, 2010 at 3:00 pm

The Giants made a roster move today, waiving little-used DE Alex Hall and promoting CB Michael Coe from the practice squad.

These transactions are the Giants 32nd and 33rd of the season, which includes all movement pertaining to the active roster and the practice squad.  That is a ludicrously high number…..

As per out colleague Zach Berman of the Star Ledger…

Coe was a fifth-round pick by the Indianapolis Colts in 2007. He played six games with the Colts that season and seven games with the Jaguars in 2009 and 2010. The Giants signed him to the practice squad in September. He was signed off the Giants practice squad last season by the Jaguars.

Hall spent training camp with the Giants before he was released at final cuts. He was claimed off waivers by the Cardinals earlier this month.

Giants Roster Moves

by John Fennelly on November 20th, 2010 at 1:57 pm

as per Pat Hanlon, Giants’ VP of Communications….

The Giants have cut CB DJ Johnson from their roster and added former Ohio State TE Jake Ballard from the practice squad.

Ballard was with the team in training camp and was cut early on, then brought back to the PS. Johnson was signed by the Giants late last season after a short stint with the Denver Broncos.

This move could be the precursor for placing FB Madison Hedgecock on IR.  It also could mean the Giants are not comfortable with Kevin Boss‘ durability right now and need to add depth at TE.

************************************************

Not making the trip to Philly tomorrow…Hedgecock, Steve Smith, Shaun O’Hara and David Diehl……

Roster News: DT Collins Signed Off Practice Squad

by John Fennelly on November 13th, 2010 at 2:17 pm

The Jacksonville Jaguars signed Nate Collins, a DT out of Virginia, off the Giants’ practice squad today.

The move comes after the Jags placed DT Aaron Kampman (torn ACL) on injured reserve.

from Jaguars.com……Collins, 6-2, 296, signed with the New York Giants as an undrafted rookie this year and spent the first nine weeks of the season on their practice squad.  He was a four-year letterman at Virginia where he was a teammate of Jaguars 2009 first-round draft pick Eugene Monroe.

Collins, 22, was a first-team All-ACC selection in 2009 after producing a career-high 76 tackles, six sacks and 10.5 tackles for loss.  He twice earned ACC Defensive Player of the Week honors in his final season.

Collins almost made the Giants this year, but the defensive line here was too deep for him to crack.  He ended up on the practice squad and many had the feeling he would be scooped up by another team.  Good player, good kid. Best of luck to him.

The Giants host the Jaguars on November 28th.
