WR Brandon Stokley’s New York Giant career is over. He was released yesterday by the team along with QB Sage Rosenfels.
The Giants elevated center Jim Cordle from the practice squad and signed free agent CB Justin Tryon. OL Selfish Capers has been added to the practice squad.
Stokely, who missed last week’s game with strained quad, was given an injury settlement and sent packing. Rosenfels was removed from the injured reserve list after missing most of training camp with a strep throat and a back injury.
Cordle has been with the team for two seasons on-and-off now, spending most of his time on the PS. Tryon was the Redskins’ 4th round draft choice in 2008 and was traded to Indianapolis last season where he started in six games.

The Giants have released QB Ryan Perrilloux from their practice squad and added LB Antonio Coleman.
Perrilloux had impressed at camp and in preseason, but the Giants simply do not need a third QB at this point in time. Eli Manning has not missed a game since 2004, and the Giants have a solid backup in David Carr. They also have another QB under contract is Sage Rosenfels, who will spend 2011 on injured reserve.
Depth on the defensive back seven is a priority and team has decided to bring in Coleman, a former two-time All-SEC selection from Auburn, who spent last season with the Buffalo Bills.
Coleman, who went undrafted in 2010, Coleman was named to the ESPN.com 2009 preseason All-SEC first team. Despite having a cast on his right hand the first 7 weeks of the season, Coleman still finished as the best pass rusher in the SEC, finishing the 2009 season ranked 1st in sacks and 2nd in tackles for loss. The Giants made several roster moves today, most notably the re-signing of safety Deon Grant. Grant was hanging around waiting for the Giants to call, They did. He came. To make room for Grant, the team released DB Cary Harris.
The other move was for a kicker. No, not Shayne Graham as everyone had thought, but Rhys Lloyd, the former Raven and Panther. Lloyd is basically a kickoff specialist, so where does that leave Matt Dodge?
To clear space for Lloyd, CB Woody Turenne was waived/injured. WR Sam Giguere was also waived/injured and the team announced the signing of S Derrick Martin.

In 2010 The New York Giants went 10 & 6 and missed the playoffs for the second year in a row. They were embarrassed at home against the Tennessee Titans, lost for the fifth straight time against a not as talented Philadelphia Eagle squad, only to suffer the largest collapse in team history against the same team 4 weeks later.
The once mighty NY Giants defense allowed 347 points ranking them 17th in this category. The fans waited and held their breath for 137 plus days for their beloved New York Giants to take the field after the lock out.

The need a running back we’ve been told.
We’ll they’ll need one less now as they signed little-used veteran Danny “DJ” Ware to a two-year contract extension today that is rumored to be worth approximately $2.2 million.

The Giants went through the motion of tendering their eligible restricted free agents this afternoon.
Keep in mind, these tenders are in accordance with the rules of the expiring CBA. It’s anyone’s guess if these offers will be applicable, binding or worthless once a new CBA is reached.
from SNY contributor Mike Garafolo….
The Giants extended tenders today to their potential free agents with only four or five years experience: DEMathias Kiwanuka (unknown level), WR Steve Smith (unknown), RBAhmad Bradshaw (second round), DTBarry Cofield (second round) TE Kevin Boss (second round), DE Dave Tollefson (second round). There’s no word yet on WR/KR Domenik Hixon, but you can bet the disparity in negotiations between the owners and the NFL Players’ Association he got one.

The signing of players you’re reading about behind the scenes these days are to reserve/futures contracts. They will not officially be added to the team’s roster until March.
Yesterday the team released the names of all of the players they plan on bringing in…..
QB Ryan Perrilloux, DB Joe Burnett, DB Cary Harris, RB Martell Mallet, OL Ikechuku Ndukwe, DE Ayanga Okpokowuruk and WR Todd Watkins.
These are in addition to the six players they inked earlier off their practice squad: Sam Giguere, Jim Cordle, Dwayne Hendricks, Charles Scott, Woody Turenne and Kenny Ingram.
Perrllioux is an interesting prospect. His career has gone from LSU to Jacksonville St to the Hartford Colonials of the UFL. He was considered a draftable talent in last year’s draft, but teams had issues with his past discipline problems. Those days are behind him from what we are told…

from SNY collaborator Mike Garafolo of the Newark Star-Ledger….
The Giants have signed three more players to reserve/future contracts for the 2011 season: RB Martell Mallett, OL Ike Ndukwe and DE Ayanga Okpokowuruk.
Mallett was with the Eagles in camp last season. He rushed for 60 yards and a touchdown on 15 carries in the preseason opener before gaining only 37 yards on his final 12 attempts of the preseason. He was briefly on the team’s practice squad before being released. He was later on the Browns‘ practice squad for two months and returned to the Eagles’ practice squad for the postseason.
Ndukwe, a former undrafted free agent who started 15 games for the Dolphins in 2008, worked out for the Giants in October.
Okpokowuruk signed with the Giants last year as an undrafted free agent. He was waived before the start of camp but signed to the practice squad in December to replace QB Rhett Bomar.
The Giants have now signed 11 players to reserve/future deals since the end of last season.
What is a reserve/future contract? Funny you should ask…..
Players signed to “reserve/future” contracts means they are being signed for the 2011 season even though that season does not officially begin until March. Only players who were not on any NFL team’s active roster when the 2010 season ended are eligible for such signings; if they were under contract, then they would remain so until March. Players who were on practice squads at the end of the season are eligible to sign with any team.

In the their last five quarters of football, the Giants’ defense looked a lot like last year’s Bill Sheridan version. If you are the Giants, that is the last thing you want to appear to be.
DC Perry Fewell, who once was perceived as a savior, is suddenly being viewed through different glasses this week. Since the Eagles meltdown, he’s had a ton of explaining to do, some of which was revealed in his media session yesterday…..
