QB, TE Shortage Addressed On Practice Squad

by John Fennelly on September 5th, 2010 at 3:13 pm

The biggest criticism yesterday after the Giants announced their 53-man roster were; “Only two quarterbacks?” and “The Giants have only two TEs on the whole roster?”

Well, today the team took care of that by claiming back QB Rhett Bomar and TEs Bear Pascoe and Jake Ballard.  These players, mind you, are not Giants’ property just players that get paid to practice with the team.

Any club can still claim them for their own 53-man roster.  That seems unlikely at this or any other moment this year.  The best part of this news is that Bomar got extensive playing time this summer and should something befall one of the team’s two QBs on the roster, the experience won’t be as foreign to him.

Pascoe and Ballard have been under the tutelage of Mike Pope for some time, so they understand the Giant way of doing things as well.  Should Kevin Boss or Travis Beckum go down, Giant fans can rest assured there is relief in the wings.

Ernie Palladino: Bomar No. 2 For Now

by John Fennelly on August 31st, 2010 at 9:56 pm

From long time Giants’ beat writer Ernie Palladino….

Tom Coughlin said the Giants have been looking at potential backup quarterbacks since Jim Sorgi went down with a shoulder capsule injury that will most likely require surgery. But the decision on bringing in somebody from the outside hasn’t been made yet, and may not be finalized either way until after Thursday’s preseason finale.

“Well, it depends on what the availability and what the cost is,” Coughlin said. “I’m not saying we’re doing that, but our people are not caught by surprise by this. Our guys have been working on this for a couple of weeks.

“I just think that we’re investigating all of our options, whatever those options are. If it comes that the decision is made after the game, fine. If it comes that the decision is made before that, fine, but all of the options are open, of course. Depending on if (Bomar) goes in there and plays well on Thursday night, we’ll certainly have good evidence to think that he can do it.

Transcript: Rhett Bomar 8.31.10

by John Fennelly on August 31st, 2010 at 3:25 pm

Q: How’s it been out there so far?
A: I’ve been comfortable, that’s been my goal the whole time. I can only control what I can control. It’s the coaches’ decision, and everything like that. I just try to go out there and play to the best of my ability, and hopefully everything works out. It’s an opportunity I have to go out there Thursday and show them that I’m capable to do that and they can trust me. That’s my goal to do that.

Q: What makes you think this job is yours to win or lose?
A: I’ve always been confident in myself. I feel comfortable in the offense and I just need to cut down on some mistakes and things like that. Like I said, I can’t control everything. I can only control how I play, and that’s it. Hopefully they’re comfortable enough with me.

Q: So a good performance out of you Thursday and maybe you’re the guy:
A: Yes. I mean you never want anybody to get hurt. Jim’s a great guy. He’s been a great help to me and I like him a lot. It’s an unfortunate situation, but it’s also an opportunity for me to try to solidify that spot, and that’s my goal. I want to be the backup on this team, and help the team out anyway I can.

QB or Not QB…That is the Question

by John Fennelly on August 31st, 2010 at 2:43 pm

Will Giants Address the Lack of Depth at Quarterback, or Roll the Dice With Inexperienced Backups?

That is the question this week, isn’t it?  It is well known that Eli Manning is an iron man in this league. He has not missed a game in his previous six seasons, playing in 87 consecutive games. Of all active QBs, only Brett Favre and brother Peyton have bested that.  We know he’s a gamer.

But what would happen if if Eli were to get injured?  The Giants never really worried too much about that in the past, so why should they now?

Giant Fans, Meet Your New Starting QB

by John Fennelly on August 19th, 2010 at 9:59 pm

In case you missed it, Eli Manning will miss this Saturday’s game.  He will probably only miss this one game, so there really isn’t cause for alarm.  But there is something about Rhett Bomar that strikes a chord with anyone who’s ever been around him.

The Giants drafted Bomar on a lark last year out of Sam Houston State and he has intrigued Giant fans ever since.  There is something there….

As my colleague Dan Benton over at Giants 101 said last night on the Pro Football NYC radio show, Bomar plays better in games than he does in practice. Camp goers are not impressed with Bomar’s overall performance, but when game time comes, a light seems to go on.

This week Bomar will have to take most of the snaps against the Steelers since Dom Randolph just got back in the swing of things today.

Bomar met with reporters this afternoon in Albany. He is a hot commodity and may get hotter if he has a good showing Saturday night.

Giants Offense Treading Water With Injuries

by John Fennelly on August 19th, 2010 at 2:37 pm

Giants’ OC Kevin Gilbride has had loads of challenges this camp. Injuries to his offensive line, tight ends and now quarterbacks have restricted his offense from ironing out the kinks this summer.

In addition to having limited personnel resources, Gilbride’s offense has had to go head-to-head with Perry Fewell’s revitalized defense, which has been going full throttle from day one.

This week Gilbride will have to rely on his pet student, Rhett Bomar, to run his offense in a game.  He had some thoughts for the media about that sudden reality.

Read: Bomar Suddenly In Spotlight

by John Fennelly on August 18th, 2010 at 9:56 pm

The Giants’ third-string QB, Rhett Bomar, is usually not the center of attention in Giants camp. Things have a way of changing in life. Suddenly, the raw, second-year Bomar is the Giants’ starting Quarterback.

He met with reporters this afternoon at U Albany.

What would you tell the fans that don’t know you so well in terms of your strengths?

My strengths? I don’t know. I feel like that if something breaks down, I can run around and make the play. I feel like I’m more comfortable in this offense this year so I’ve been making smarter decisions. I feel like I can make the throws. I throw a lot more comfortably this year than I did last year. There’s no doubt about that.
