Ryan on Playing Giants: Get Your Tickets Early

by John Fennelly on August 1st, 2011 at 9:32 pm

Jets’ coach Rex Ryan is at it again. He gets in front of a microphone and the inside voice comes flowing out.

Today, in his first presser of the year, he commented on playing the Giants on Christmas Eve….

That one is going to be a special game. Oh, it’s just going to be another game. No, it’s not. We all know what that game stands for. That one is one you’re going to get your tickets for early. That one is going to be a beauty.

Coughlin: We Made Offer to Plax

by John Fennelly on July 31st, 2011 at 3:10 pm

Tom Coughlin said today the Giants made a contract offer to Plaxico Burress, but he “decided to go elsewhere” according our colleague Zach Berman of the Star-Ledger. The Jets simply came in and outbid the Giants.

“His decision was to go elsewhere,” Coughlin said. “Sounded like a bigger guarantee, I don’t know all the facts about that.”

It makes sense to us now. Plaxico chose to shop his services to the two organizations that he knew best; the Steelers and the Giants. He wanted that familiarity, but he wanted to get paid in process.

Burress didn’t want to leave NJ if possible. The Giants made him an offer, but the Jets bettered it. After almost 3 years of no income to speak of, the money did the talking…

Giants Will Regret Not Signing Plaxico…Then Again, Maybe Not

by John Fennelly on July 31st, 2011 at 10:50 am

The Jets wanted Plaxico Burress. They have dozens of distractions under their roof all the time, so what’s one more?

Many feel Manningham will break out in 2011.

The Giants met with Burress, just like Jerry Reese promised us he would, but in the end, they decided to stick with their current options at wide receiver.

Last night, we saw some of those options in action. Personally I get it. They are fairly deep at wideout, and although they could have used the unique matchup advantage Burress brings to the table, they have a bunch of very capable players that work well with QB Eli Manning.

“We have some young guys that we really haven’t had the chance to see if they could contribute,” head coach Tom Coughlin told us last night. “Last year we certainly needed depth at the position.”

He’s right. The Giants have a lot of unexplored options that may play in their favor.

Hakeem Nicks is a Pro Bowl-caliber receiver. He catches everything and does not need to be open to make a play. We were told he was in the Michael Irvin mold and this year he may advance to that level.

Mario Manningham just turned 25. It seems like he’s been here forever. He is becoming polished and he also is ready for his closeup.  Of all the wideouts in the league last year that had 60 or more receptions, only four had a better Yards Per Catch average than Manningham. He’s ready to explode.

Manning Passes on Lobbying for Burress

by Charles Costello on July 31st, 2011 at 8:16 am

“I am going about my business and preparing myself. I don’t lobby for anybody. If this is the right spot for Plaxico, if the Giants and coach Coughlin are pleased with his attitude after talking to him, I am happy to have him.

“But I am preparing with the guys we have here and now. I am not out lobbying for Kevin Boss either. I think he (Burress) is a great player and would love to have him. You know the Giants know what they are doing. If they want my two cents, my advice, then I’d be happy to talk to them about it.”

Coughlin is Guarded on Plaxico, Frank on Everything Else

by John Fennelly on July 31st, 2011 at 7:01 am

Giants head coach Tom Coughlin met the media in the twilight under the awnings at TIMEX last night after the Giants first full workout of the post-lockout era.

He said he spoke with Plaxico Burress on Friday night and would prefer to keep the conversation “confidential”.

Coughlin also urged that first round selection Prince Amukamara, who is unsigned, “better get in here.” and that holdout Osi Umenyiora did report but could not participate until he took and passes a physical.

In addition, the coach was straight-forward about why punter Steve Weatherford is being brought in: ‘Competition.”  Coughlin also seemed surprised that Adam Koets’ knee has not progressed as the team had thought. Koets was unable to practice.

Other Issues Could Force Giants to Opt-Out of Plaxico Stakes

by John Fennelly on July 30th, 2011 at 1:14 pm

Plaxico Burress is in Pittsburgh today either being courted by the Steelers or just making the rounds to make his agent, Drew Rosenhaus, happy.

He met with the Giants last night, and although the results were reportedly “positive”, Burress may just have met with them for closure purposes.

There have been some tweets this morning from reporters in Pittsburgh, here and around the NFL saying the Giants are not on Plaxico’s list, but rather their co-tenants – the Jets – are.

Giants players – including Eli Manning – are all aware that Plaxico can help them, especially since Steve Smith (if signed) will begin the season on PUP and Ramses Barden is already there.

Justin Tuck, the Giants defensive captain, believes the Giants “need” Plaxico, but can win without him.

So be it. The Giants would like to bring Plaxico back if the circumstances allow, but right now they have bigger fish to fry.

In this off-season to forget, the Giants have enough distractions to deal with.  They may have no choice but to let Plaxico go he merry way.

Ahmad Bradshaw has to be re-signed. So does Kevin Boss. They have to bring in Prince Amukamara at some point. And then, there’s the Osi drama.

Tom Coughlin only concerns himself with the players that are here. Plaxico is not one of them. Neither is Osi or Prince.

The Prince will be here shortly we believe and Osi will get sick of writing checks to the NFL in a few days. But Plaxico may not be coming, now. Maybe he never was…

Plaxico Burress: Back Where He Belongs?

by Charles Costello on July 30th, 2011 at 9:08 am

By bringing in Plaxico Burress Friday evening, the Giants did – and are doing – exactly what I’d expect from them.

First, they’re a class organization, one that would be willing to give a guy like Burress a second chance. In fact, when you consider the reprimands and fines and suspensions from the past, he’s already gotten that from Big Blue.

Second, the Giants are a football team that would benefit from the services of a wide receiver who at one point in his career was one of the best in the game. I thought GM Jerry Reese gave a very interesting response yesterday when asked if he felt the Giants need to put Burress through a workout before considering whether to sign him:

“If you’re away for two years and we work you out you’ll probably look like you’ve been away for two years,” Reese said. “What’s the point? We don’t expect him to go out there and look like he’s played last year.”

Clearly, the GM still thinks he’s got something left. So do I. And I think the majority of Giants fans would be willing to bet on a successful return.

You get the sense, from what Reese said and from everything else you hear, that this really is about testing Burress’ sincerity, as Tom Coughlin mentioned before their meeting. The Giants believe Burress can play. They want to make sure he’d play by their rules.

On the same evening that Burress returned to the Meadowlands, Nnamdi Asomugha became an Eagle. Now, Philadelphia has Asante Samuel, Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie, and Asomugha. So yes, they’re going to be tough to throw against and yes, Burress may be even more important to the Giants now.

But remember, before Burress met with the Giants, the team’s co-owner, John Mara, talked about how a lot had to happen for the Giants to bring Burress back. The meeting with Coughlin last night was a good first step. That relationship must be mended before we go any further. It’s clear the Giants head coach doesn’t plan on changing his ways any time soon. And why should he.

“Let me just say this to you. What is there to change?” Coughlin said before the meeting. “When you sign on to go to work for somebody, the basic thing is you got to go to work, you got to be there, you got to get there on time. What is there to change? When you get right down to it, that is the basic ingredient of a rule. Jump into the team as hard as you can, as fast as you can, be a part of the team, but understand your responsibility. People depend on you.”

When I saw a photo of Burress in the paper this morning, back at Giants headquarters, I started to think about the past. Mostly about the positive contributions he made. One photo had Burress taking a look at a picture of himself the team had on display. Another was of him talking to Eli Manning.

Clearly, he has a place in Giants history. Does he get a chance to add to his Big Blue legacy?

Burress Can Help Giants Crack Eagles’ New Code

by John Fennelly on July 30th, 2011 at 8:04 am

Sometimes I wonder if anyone is ever paying attention.  This morning, finally, the Daily News’ Gary Myers printed what this site has been saying all along:

The Giants Need Plaxico Burress.

I will tell you for the final time. The Giants need to get past Philadelphia in order to advance in the NFC. End of debate.

Just think of it this way: in order to get into the house, you gotta get past the dogs. For the Giants, those dogs are the Philadelphia Eagles.

And those dogs just got more ferocious the past 48 hours by adding two of the game’s finest CBs: Nnamdi Asomugha and Dominque Rogers-Cromartie.

The Giants young receiving corps may be talented, but they ain’t that talented. They were having enough trouble with Asante Samuel and co. Now they face a more daunting task.

They need a codebreaker. They need Plaxico Burress.
