Brady on the Wrong End Again vs Eli, Giants

by John Fennelly on February 6th, 2012 at 7:30 am

New England QB Tom Brady said he wanted the ball at the end of the game with a chance to win it. That’s just what he got last night, except he had envisioned a different outcome.

“We got to the 50 (yard line) and just ran out of time,” Brady said after the game. “We threw a hail-mary at the end. I’m not sure how close we were to getting it. Obviously I wish we could have done a little bit more.”

The Giants’ defense stepped up when it counted, but Brady sat at his presser last night lamenting about what could have been. The Patriots left a lot of their game out on the field last night. He felt they did not do enough to beat the Giants – who did just enough to win.

“We just didn’t make enough plays. In the first quarter, we didn’t have the ball a ton,” said the future Hall-of-Famer. “The second quarter, we played a little bit better. Third quarter, we started well and it came down to the fourth quarter. (The Giants) made some plays there at the end. We went out there to win the game. We just didn’t make enough plays.”

No, they didn’t. The most notable missed opportunity was with 4:06 remaining in the 4th quarter. On 2nd-and-11 from the Giants’ 44, Brady spotted his favorite target – WR Wes Welker – wide open in the left flat with room to run. The pass was a bit high and Welker could not reel it in. It is a catch he routinely makes….

The Giants won their second Super Bowl in five seasons last night and the fans – who rode the rollercoaster ride with Big Blue all year – were rewarded with an exciting 21-17 victory over the New England Patriots in Super Bowl XLVI last night.

“Big Blue gave us a game to remember, and on Tuesday we’re going to give them a parade to remember,” NYC mayor Mike Bloomberg said in a statement.

Sunday Morning Update: Calm Before the Storm

by John Fennelly on February 5th, 2012 at 8:12 am

The Giants are readying for another – yes, another – primetime game. This time, though, it’s THE primetime game: the Super Bowl. Kickoff is approximately 6:40.

Last night, the team got an inspirational speech from head coach Tom Coughlin – one in which pronounced his love for the players – before they hit the hay for the 11pm curfew.

The day was an uneventful one for the Giants. One of their buses malfunctioned on the way to practice, but it did not effect any of the team’s plans. Practice went off without a hitch.

As per the pool report….

The Giants went through a crisp, 48-minute walk-through practice with every player on the team in uniform and accounted for.

Running back Ahmad Bradshaw showed barely a hint of soreness in his ankle as he went through all the scripted situations for the offense. In addition, safety Tyler Sash and defensive end Osi Umenyiora participated in the light, but focused work.

“He looked fine, no soreness, nothing you could notice,” Giants head coach Tom Coughlin said regarding Bradshaw. “This was all situational stuff, nothing unusual. It was a Saturday morning jog-through, all situations.”

Eli Manning is staying calm. When is he not calm? From NBC Sports….

Discarded by Jets, Weatherford at Home With Giants

by John Fennelly on January 30th, 2012 at 12:18 pm

From Greg Hanlon, our man at Capital New York….

When it comes to profanity-laced exultations of joy that are caught on camera, Steve Weatherford’s reaction to Lawrence Tynes’ game winning-field goal in the conference championship game against the 49ers last week might not have had the significance of, say, Joe Biden’s reaction to universal health care.

But to Giants fans, the field goal—which was made possible by Weatherford’s nifty hold of a bad snap, and which Weatherford reacted to by screaming in view of Fox’s camera that the Giants were going to the “mother—— Super Bowl”—was a pretty big deal in its own right.

NYC Sports Bar to Ban Sam Adams Sales During Super Bowl

by John Fennelly on January 28th, 2012 at 4:29 pm

Well, you knew it was coming. War. Between the two of the biggest drinking towns in America. All they needed was a reason….

Foley’s NY Pub & Restaurant,(18 West 33rd St. across from the Empire State Building), New York’s premier sports bar, announced today that it is banning the sale of Sam Adams Boston Lager during the big game between the Giants and Patriots on February 5, 2012.

“In support of Big Blue, we will be banning the sale of Sam Adams and anything Boston-related during the game. We are encouraging them instead to order Brooklyn Ale, which is brewed here in New York,” said Shaun Clancy, owner of Foley’s, who famously banned the singing of Danny Boy on St. Patrick’s Day in 2008. “The New York vs. Boston trash talking has already begun, and we’re supporting our home city.”

Foley’s has also made a friendly wager with McGreevy’s (911 Boylston Street), Boston’s top sports bar. The losing bar owner will have to travel to the winner’s city and work a bartending shift while wearing the “enemy” team’s jersey.

Friday Morning Update: Avoiding the Hype

by John Fennelly on January 27th, 2012 at 6:07 am

The Giants and Patriots both worked out for real yesterday. The Giants decided to rest seven players to the Patriots’ one (see below injury update).

Tom Coughlin did not seem overly concerned about any of the injuries, saying the club was just being “smart” and taking precautions.

One of the names on the list was a surprise – KR Will Blackmon (knee) – who Coughlin confirmed was replaced by Aaron Ross late in last Sunday’s game due to the injury.

Coughlin also said the team would keep to it’s normal routine as much as possible and follow an itinerary very close to the one followed in ’07.

“Basically, the format will be the same in terms of how we operate here and what the days off are, when we travel, and what we will do when we start up again,” the coach said.

QB Eli Manning is unflappable in front of the media as he is in the pocket. He is going about his business and isn’t gloating that he has proven his detractors wrong – very wrong. He was asked if he was tired of hearing about his “legacy”, to which he said, “yes.”

“I don’t think that’s anything that I worry about,” Manning said. “My job is to try to play at a high level, try to play football for the Giants. I think the important thing when you play in big games, like a Super Bowl, is don’t let the fact that it is a big game make you think about other things. You have to keep it simple in a sense of this is a great opportunity for this team, for this organization to win a championship. That’s the important thing. That’s what you play for.”

LB Mathias Kiwanuka missed Super Bowl XLII with a broken leg. Not this time. The BC product grew up in Indianapolis and was asked what playing this game in his hometown means to him…

“This is everything that dreams are made of,” Kiwi said. “It is an opportunity not just to play in the biggest game, on the biggest stage. This is America’s game and this is the biggest game of the year. I get to do it at home, in front of my family and maybe people who would not have been able to travel and see me. Just being back out there after being injured and stuff, it is all fun. “

WR Victor Cruz is also living a dream. A dream not even Hollywood could get away with. He was asked if even he could have sold himself this story…

“Not initially,” said the Paterson-born Cruz. “Every step of the way I just tried to play my hardest and whatever opportunity came my way, I just tried to take advantage of it. I understood that opportunites were going to come few and far between and when that small window opens for me I have to jump right through it and make sure I seize that moment and that opportunity. Thank God I have.”

Notes

The Giants will practice today and tomorrow and leave for Indianapolis Monday morning. The Patriots are scheduled to head out to Indy on Sunday afternoon.
