Tom Coughlin Post-Practice Quotes 8.3

by John Fennelly on August 4th, 2011 at 8:13 am

The Giants practiced inside the fieldhouse last night due to the rain. Tom Coughlin was pleased to see his team in pads for the very first time this season.

“I’m glad to be out here in pads and I was glad to get the work. There were a couple of things that did disappoint me that we will teach and overcome with the young guys. It was good but you can see that some of the rust has to come off.”

On the Osi situation….

“I’m not talking about Osi. I have nothing to say. I don’t know anything. It seems like there’s chapters. When I do have something to tell you, I’ll tell you, but I don’t know any more than all of the speculation. I’d rather talk about the guys that are here and are practicing….I was pleased (Osi was here)…I think it’s a good thing. I’m hoping that it’s the kind of indication that we’re all looking for.”

On his young linebackers….

“They’ve been aggressive and noteworthy in their play. Sometimes they’re in the wrong spot or something, but they recover and they seem to be able to go and make some things happen. I like the way they’re running around.”

On recently signed DT Gabe Watson…

“In good shape. Light on his feet. We know quite a bit about him. I’ll tell you, a year or two ago he was pretty darn exciting. I can’t tell you snap for snap what happened over the last year, but he’s a strong, powerful guy that shows good athleticism and quickness. His availability was attractive to us. Hopefully he’ll look at this as a new start and do something about it.”

Gilbride: Eagles Making it a “Challenge”

by John Fennelly on August 2nd, 2011 at 6:03 am

Kevin Gilbride has lots of weapons at his disposal, even if the team missed out on Plaxico Burress. They re-signed RB Ahmad Bradshaw, grabbed another TE in Ben Patrick and, if you look at their roster, have tons of talent and speed at the skill positions.

The Giants’ offensive coordinator met the media at TIMEX yesterday to discuss the state of his offense (keep in mind this was before the Giants announced that Ahmad Bradshaw was returning):

Q: Is the installation, the things you do early in camp, is it any different because you didn’t have mini camps and OTAs this year?
A: It’s different only in the sense that instead of this being the third time that you’ve gone through something – once in your OTAs, the second time reviewing it in minicamp, this is the third time through – now it’s the first time. For the older guys it’s more of a, ‘Oh yeah, that’s right, I forgot.’ Or you’re chipping off a little rust. For the new guys, it’s the first time you’ve ever heard it. Trying to reconcile the pace with new guys who have never heard any of this stuff before with the guys who, you know, you’re ready to work on the refinement and the nuances of some things can be a little bit challenging. What we’re trying to do, to the best of our ability, is go at the same installation pace that we normally do. What we’re getting a chance to do is review it twice – once going in, practicing and then coming back and doing it in the morning. To date so far, I think we’re doing pretty well. As it continues to go on, we’ll see.

Giants Could Be Camping by Friday

by John Fennelly on July 25th, 2011 at 12:08 pm

We’re hearing if all goes well today and the players ratify the proposal, the Giants could be in camp by this coming Friday.

Our good friend Paul Dottino over at WFAN is projecting Friday to be the report date for Big Blue – and when have we ever known Paul to be wrong?

As for fan access, Mike Garafolo says the team may release something later today.

Jason LaCanfora of NFLN does not believe teams will be given the green light to sign UDFAs until tomorrow at the soonest…. More to come

In the Money: Giants Valued at $1.18 Billion

by John Fennelly on July 16th, 2011 at 8:40 am

The Giants and the Jets both finished in the top ten of Forbes’ latest “most valuable sports franchises” list.

John Mara and Steve Tisch

Big Blue was rated eighth overall at $1.18 billion just ahead of the tenth-ranked Jets, who were valued at $1.14 billion. The Houston Texans were in between them at $1.17 billion.  The list contained almost the entire NFC East, with the exception of (you guessed it) the Philadelphia Eagles.

Report: MetLife Closing in on Naming Rights Deal

by Charles Costello on June 27th, 2011 at 6:45 pm

SportsBusiness Journal is reporting that MetLife is close to a deal to buy the naming rights to the New Meadowlands Stadium. According to the report, the deal will be worth between $17 and $18 million a year.

MetLife is in advanced discussions with New Meadowlands Stadium to upgrade its corner sponsorship at the year-old facility to a full naming-rights deal. A source close to the deal described the negotiations as “very advanced, but not complete.”

Other sources familiar with the matter emphasized that while a deal to name the home of the New York Jets and Giants, and the site of the 2014 Super Bowl, MetLife Stadium was not finalized, discussions have progressed enough that those inquiring about naming rights in the last month have been told that they were not available, though a cornerstone sponsorship could be. Several sources said MetLife is paying about $7 million a year for its cornerstone deal, and that the naming-rights package being considered would average between $17 million and $18 million a year.

For New Meadowlands Stadium, the deal would be a significant statement, as well as the ultimate up-sell. National attention has focused on the inability to land a naming-rights partner at high-profile venues like New Meadowlands and Cowboys Stadium. Executives with New Meadowlands, the Jets and Giants, and Wasserman Media Group have been in the market for years pitching the deal, which initially had a sticker price of more than $30 million a year.

The full story is here.
