Seahawks Offer Trufant Six-Year Deal

marcus trufantFrank Hughes of the Seattle News Tribune reports that the Seattle Seahawks are offering their designated franchise player CB Marcus Trufant a six-year deal.

Sources have indicated the Seahawks’ offer was well below the $43 million Nate Clements will earn in the first five years of the eight-year, $80 million deal he signed last offseason. (Clements is unlikely to be paid in the final three years of his contract.)

Even when a sixth year is added to the Trufant offer, it does not match the Clements figure, meaning the sides are not likely to reach an immediate accord, something the Seahawks acknowledge limits what they can do with other free agents.

If the two sides fail to reach an agreement, the Seahawks could look to trade the 27-year old cornerback to a team that is willing to spend the money on him.

On Saturday, Bob Glauber of Newsday reported that the Giants were interested.

Multiple Giants Seeking More Money

As Giants Football Blog’s Gary Grund previously reported, Plaxico Burress is seeking to restructure his deal that runs through 2010.

Osi Umenyiora’s deal expires in 2012, and is worth $40 million, but he’s looking to restructure as well.

DT William Josephis is expected to be let go by the Giants as well as CB R.W. McQuarters.

The Giants continue to have interest in Marcus Trufant and Nnamdi Asumugha, which would mean forfeiting a first round pick in 2008, 2009 and more to Seattle or Oakland.

Marcus TrufantBob Glauber of Newsday notes that in addition to Falcons cornerback DeAngelo Hall, the Giants are also showing interest in trading for Seahawks cornerback Marcus Trufant. The Seahawks designated Trufant as their franchise player earlier this week and have exclusive negotiating rights with him for the 2008 season, but still reserve the right to trade him.

Trufant, 27, recorded 85 tackles with a career high 7 interceptions last year with Seattle.
