From our colleagues over at Giants 101….Jets coach Rex Ryan chimes in on Eli Manning‘s recent statements:
“Eli’s saying he can be in the conversation, [and] I certainly understand where he’s coming from. He’s won a Super Bowl,” Ryan said. “Is he Tom Brady and Peyton? Probably not. But he’s pretty damned good.”

The Giants came away from the NFL Draft in April without really addressing their LB needs. Sure, they walked out with two late rounders in Michigan State’s Greg Jones and USF’s Jacquian Williams but fans and pundits were still unsatisfied.
Usually, GM Jerry Reese does his best work later in the draft and immediately after during the UDFA frenzy which opens up when the draft concludes.
This year, Reese may have outdone himself by snagging LB Mark Herzlich of BC, Pitt FB Henry Hynoski and LB Spencer Paysinger of Oregon.

Its’ an unusual Thursday here as there is no practice. Because of the Monday night game, the off day was moved to today from Tuesday.
Yesterday, the highlights (if you can call them that): TE Travis Beckum was told to get off the field by Kevin Gilbride and DE Justin Tuck left practice with a lower leg injury, that we later learned was an Achilles strain. It should not keep him out for any extended period of time. The secondary continued to drop INTs - Terrell Thomas was the biggest culprit – and Michael Boley and JPP did not practice again due to back issues.
Rookie LB Spencer Paysinger spent time on the first team (see out featured post) and K Rhys Lloyd, who will kick in place or Lawrence Tynes this week, was perfect in his five FG attempts. WR Darius Reynaud, who is having a nice camp, missed another day with a hammy strain. LB Clint Sintim returned (that should have been the headline, I know) and WR Domenik Hixon also practiced. The Giants are sitting him every other day to alleviate pressure on his newly rehabbed knee. Just a precaution. They need him fresh….
Sometimes it’s the moves you don’t make that turn out for you. The Giants’ could have cut players and gone hog wild in free agency (such as those two teams that wear the green shirts) but decided to give the young players they have accumulated develop. CB Brian Witherspoon is one of those players. He absolutely has caught the eye of everyone at camp.
In the first preseason game, Witherspoon had two tackles and two passes defended agains Cam Newton and Carolina. He began his career with several other teams as a special teams player, but he is blossoming into an NFL- caliber cornerback. He is currently with the second team defense and we hope the Giants keep him. He wants to stay, that is for sure…
“Ever since I got here, they treated me like I’ve been here for years,” Witherspoon told Dan Salomone of Giants.com, “It’s a first class organization. I love being here. I love playing with the guys that are here. Just being in the meeting room and seeing the enthusiasm and the will to win that these guys have, it’s really good and easy to feed off of. I would love to stay here.”
The Giants will resume practice on Friday in preparation for their game vs Chicago Monday night. Saturday will be the final training camp practice open to the public.

The Giants are out on the field at TIMEX this afternoon on this beautiful day in the NY Metro area.
LB Michael Boley and WR Darius Reynaud are both sitting out again today. Boley has back pain and Reynaud has a hammy.
K Lawrence Tynes is also out. He will most likely not play Monday against Chicago. Coach Coughlin has indicated that newly signed Rhys Lloyd is the “kicker of record”.
JPP may participate today after sitting yesterday with his summer back spasms.
Yonkers’ Jimmy Kennedy, the veteran DT out of Penn State who last played for the Vikings has tweeted that he is working out for the Giants today.
Former Miami Hurricanes Kenny Phillips and Antrel Rolle are not available to the media today after Yahoo Sports named them in an expose alleging they received inappropriate gifts from patrons.
WFAN is on site today. Yes, that means Mike Francesa will be grilling and drilling the Giants.

The Giants are stepping up the effort in camp. The arrival of veterans Osi Umenyiora and Deon Grant have really stirred a stagnant pot. Yesterday, Beatty said he was glad to have Osi Back:
“Just to have that pass rusher to go against and to know the competition that we’re facing this year. It makes me feel a lot better knowing that I have not only JPP but Osi to go against.”
Beatty said he put on some needed weight over the off season at the expense of speed:
“Right now I’m around 320 so from playing last season around 300-310, it’s about 10-20 of good weight that I kept on during camp and not just gained it to drop it…the footwork and all that I haven’t lost. I think my 40 might have slowed down a bit but since I don’t have to run it, we’ll never know.”
If Beatty has to run 40 yards during a play, that means something very good – or very bad – just happened.
Grant came right on yesterday and riled up the troops. Several Giants seemed to be pleased to see the 32-year-old Grant back in Blue. Antrel Rolle actually called it “a blessing”.
Grant just adds another veteran perspective to the Giants’ locker room. Oh, and some swagger, too:
“I felt like I started something here last year and we didn’t finish it. When I have something like that in my hands, I like to finish it and with all the things going on in Philly right now, that is the team I like to face. I am a competitive guy so with them and all the additions that they made, I wanted to be on the other side of the ball going against that. ”
Grant’s return gives the Giants some relief in their nickel package, where the Giants had rookies Prince Amukamara and Tyler Sash penciled in. Aaron Ross has not looked good out there, either. Brian Witherspoon, a free agent the Giants picked up late last season, has actually looked better. He may figure in somewhere in those formations also.
The Giants like to use three safeties, mainly because of the dearth of talent and speed at LB. Will UDFA Spencer Paysinger get some run at LB this year..?
Don’t read too much into JPP’s aching back. This happens to him every summer. Michael Boley’s back is hurting, too. He may be in danger of missing Monday’s game vs Chicago. Too bad, he’s been playing well.
When will Clint Sintim play again? First five callers to answer that correctly will win, uh, something…

Giants’ RB Ahmad Bradshaw has always had some sort of ailment: a foot, an ankle, a wrist etc. He’s played through it all, only missing two games in the past three seasons.
This year, the newly-signed tailback is feeling the best he’s ever felt and plans to expand on his 1,235 yard-rushing / 8 TD performance last season in which -as the the featured back – carried ball 276 times for an average of 4.5 per carry.
He also had ankle and wrist injuries, the latter causing him to fumble a league-leading seven times in losing his starting status to best friend Brandon Jacobs.
This year will be different. Bradshaw signed a four-year, $18 million deal to stay with the Giants, which was facilitated by Jacobs’ willingness to take a pay decrease. The two will share duties again in the Giants’ backfield this season, but Bradshaw aims to top his 2010 production even in the face of less carries.
The explosive 25-year-old, in his fifth season out of Marshall, met with the media at TIMEX this afternoon….

The Giants have re-signed safety Deon Grant, who was a starter on their defense last season while Kenny Phillips battled back from knee surgery.
Grant, 32, was a free agent and waiting at home for the Giants to ring him up. He reportedly turned down an offer from the rival Philadelphia Eagles.
The Giants released DB Cary Harris to clear room on the roster for Grant.
Grant told reporters that he wanted to come back to the Giants because he has ‘unfinished business’ with the Eagles.
He also reclaimed his #34 jersey. The Giants needed some depth at safety. All they really have back there are Phillips, Antrel Rolle and rookie Tyler Sash…

Tuesdays are usually player’s day off, but since the Giants will play Monday night this week, they will take their day off on Thursday. Tom Coughlin was glad to see his star DE Osi Umneyiora finally take the filed yesterday. Calling the debut “spirited”, the coach said he had not had a chance to sit with Osi one-on-one yet.
Umenyiora did not speak to the media yesterday.
K Lawrence Tynes is feeling more fortunate than pissed these days after a near-miss on his knee the other night. The injury, which occurred when a Panther defender blocked Tynes’ FG attempt and then collided with him, resulted in a bruised thigh.

Giant fans have really taken to social media these days. Sr VP Pat Hanlon has awakened a sleeping beast, it seems.
Hanlon’s interaction with fans has caught the eye -and ire- of the Giants vast swath of fans across the globe. It’s great for the team and the fans:
[RT @Giants: For the 2nd consecutive day, the #Giants gained the most twitter followers in the past 24 hours amongst #nfl teams! Thanks #NYG fans!]
Hey, it’s 2011….social media and the Internet have taken over. The old Giant guard is no longer. The modern day Giant fan is ready to emerge…
