Tyree Has Knee Surgery

tyreeRalph Vacchiano of the New York Daily News reports that Giants WR David Tyree had surgery performed on his right knee last week and might not be ready for the start of training camp in July.

He had the surgery after his knee locked up on him during offseason workouts and an MRI revealed that he tore his meniscus, at least partially.

Doctors told him he could opt not to have the surgery and take his chances for next season. But there was a real chance that if he let it heal on his own, he could make it worse.

Tyree Signs Book Deal

David Tyree is a popular man these days, signing lucrative autograph deals, making multiple charity appearances, including last night at a benefit auction in honor of 9/11 hero Jeremey Glick, Bob Glauber at Newsday reports.

Next up is a book about his life, due in September. Tyree has had quite a ride, he struggled with drinking and was arrested for marijuana possession in 2004, but turned his life around by finding his faith. He then found out his mother had passed away just as the Giants were making their incredible playoff run.

Tyree’s journey was recently capped off by being part of one of the most incredible catches in Super Bowl history.

“I’ve got a great life,” he said. “I really couldn’t imagine it any better. There have been some heartaches along the way, but there have been so many blessings, too.”

I’m happy to see David taking his struggles and doing something positive with it. He’s an inspiration for others. No matter how dark things may look there’s a light at the end of the tunnel.

David Tyree : “While it was in the air, I was just amazed that he got off the play. Eli’s not one of the most fleet-footed of guys – so once he puts it up I’m just focusing in on it. It had that Chariots Of Fire feeling to it.”

Brian Kilmeade of Fox and Friends: “And you already had a touchdown in that game.”

Tyree: “Nobody talks about the touchdown though.”

Catch 42

...posted by Andrew Vazzano...

“Catch 42″ was the name chosen for the Eli Manning to David Tyree play in Super Bowl XLII, voted on by readers of the NY Daily News. Ralph Vacchiano has the breakdown:

“Catch 42” emerged as the favored name for the famous Eli Manning-to-David Tyree play. It received 36% (2,556) of the 7,016 ballots cast.

That made it a slim winner over The Hail Manning (33%, 2,338 votes), which led most of the way. The Ty-Reach (15%, 1,069) came in third, The Hat Trick (9%, 626) finished fourth, and The Glendale Grab (6%, 427) brought up the rear.”

Preferably, I liked The Glendale Grab, but Catch 42 will probably be the one that sticks.

I still prefer “The Flee to Tyree” but thats just me.

The Redemption Of David Tyree

...posted by Anthony De Rosa...

Greg Bishop and Pete Thamel at the New York Times pen a great article about Giants WR and Super Bowl hero David Tyree who went from a jail cell to the cover of Sports Illustrated.

Tyree was arrested for drug possession after police found half a pound of marijuana in his car several years ago. Tyree transformed his life, which started with using drugs at a young age, to a fateful day in March of 2004 when he decided to turn his life around.

Tyree talks about the coaches who believed in him, Jim Fassel and Tom Coughlin. Coughlin was there to console him when Tyree found out his mother had passed away this past December.

In 2006, Tyree and his wife started Next in Line, a project to counsel at-risk teenagers. His catch will live on forever, and hopefully so will his impact on the kids he’s devoted himself to save.

The Call You Haven’t Heard

...posted by Anthony De Rosa...

Marv Albert’s radio play by play of the Flee to Tyree dubbed over the Fox telecast.

You likely watched this play on television, and did not have the benefit of hearing Marv’s much better, impassioned call of this historic play. Joe Buck’s monotone, distant call simply does not do this play justice as Marv’s does.

Even Bill Simmons of ESPN, a unapologetic Patriots fan, was disgusted by Buck’s emotionless call.

If you’re a play-by-play announcer and you can’t get excited for a play like that, then why are you doing this for a living? Only Pat Summerall could get away with deadpan calls for miracle plays, and I have to say, even Pat’s voice might have cracked on that one. Over everything else, a play-by-play guy should be able to match the excitement of a particular game, right? How could Buck feel good about himself after that call? Imagine him doing the last seconds of the USA-USSR hockey game in 1980? “And the clock winds down … and the Americans have done it.” He should issue an apology to every Giants fan who would have put the call of that Manning-Tyree play on their answering machine or cell phone message.
