Mike Garafolo of the Star Ledger provides a number updates from camp today.

Kenny Phillips was given a chance to work with the first team, as Michael Johnson was bumped to the second unit. Phillips deflected a pass from Eli Manning for Steve Smith. James Butler grabbed the deflection for an INT.

Garafolo provides more notes regarding Justin Tuck, Derrick Ward, Kareem McKenzie, Eli Manning’s worst pass of training camp, a great practice by David Diehl, and a wicked takedown of Bryan Kehl by Chris Snee.

The Giants have announced their signing of right guard Chris Snee to a six-year contract extension.

“I am just happy to have it done before the season and really just have peace of mind and not worry about it and go out and play,” Snee said. “I had faith that it would be done.”

Snee, son-in-law of coach Tom Coughlin, has been a Giant his entire five year career, after being signed in the second round of the 2004 draft. Left guard Rich Seubert and left tackle David Diehl recently signed contract extensions with the Giants as well. The Giants offensive line was credited with being one of the main factors for their championship season. Locking in Snee, Seubert, Diehl along with center Shaun O’Hara and right tackle Kareem McKenzie ensures that the Giants will continue to carry that competitive advantage into the forseeable future.

“We are very pleased to get Chris extended,” general manager Jerry Reese said. “He has been a tremendous player and person for us since day one. It’s also very important to keep our offensive line intact.”

Snee spoke about the importance of chemistry among the fraternity of Giants linemen.

“We have spoken so much about how well we play together and the importance of continuity,” Snee said. “We feel like we’re the core group of the offense - that is where we feel like it starts. To keep this group together for as long as we can is important.”

Snee has started all 59 regular season and six postseason games as a Giant. He has 48 consecutive regular season starts, the third-longest streak on the team behind David Diehl (80) and Eli Manning (55).

Snee and his offensive line carried the Giants to finish fourth in the NFL in rushing yardage with an average of 134.3 yards a game.

Snee hopes to remain a Giant his entire career, which this deal likely ensures.

“That would be great,” he said. “That is what I told myself the day I came in. As I saw the roster changing so frequently, I started to think, ‘Maybe it is not as 100 percent as I thought.’ But this certainly is a great step in that direction.”

ESPN’s Mike McAllister, along with John Clayton, and Football Outsiders’ Aaron Schatz came up with a list of Giants who should have been picked to be in the Pro Bowl had they not made the selections in mid-December, before the Giants made their incredible playoff run.

The five Giants they chose were guard Chris Snee, quarterback Eli Manning, wide receiver Plaxico Burress, fullback Madison Hedgecock, and defensive end Justin Tuck.
