Giants-Cards Update: Beanie a Game-Time Decision

by John Fennelly on October 2nd, 2011 at 8:54 am

Beanie Wells, the Arizona Cardinals’ leading rusher, is questionable for today’s game vs the Giants. His hamstring injury forced him to sit out of last week’s game in Seattle and the Cards struggled on the ground without him.

In Weeks One and Two, Wells averaged 5.7 yards-per carry and 91.5 yards per game, scoring in both contests. Cardinals head coach Ken Whisenhunt remained optimistic that Wells could play against New York saying Wells would play “barring something we don’t know about.”

“Now, does that mean he’s going to be able to have 30 carries? We’ll see. That’s what you don’t know,” Whisenhunt said

ESPN reported this morning that Wells would be a “game-time” decision

Inside the Cardinals: A Peek at the Week Four Opponent

by John Fennelly on October 1st, 2011 at 10:00 am

Here is what we culled from the annals of the Arizona Cardinals’ media vault. Just about everything you need to know, or want to know about this longstanding NFL franchise who host our Giants tomorrow afternoon at 4:15pm…

The Cardinals once hailed from Chicago before moving to St. Louis in 1960, where they played in Busch Stadium until 1987. They moved west to Phoenix in 1988 and officially changed their name to the Arizona Cardinals in 1994.

They were longtime division rivals of the Giants until being moved to the NFC West Division in 2002 as part of the league’s geographical realignment.

This week’s game between the Cardinals and Giants is the 125th meeting between the two teams in a series that dates back to 1926. It is the Cardinals third-oldest rivalry (Chicago, Green Bay) and the Cardinals have faced the Giants more times than any other NFL franchise. The Giants lead the series, 80-42 with two ties.

From the Arizona Cardinals Media Dept:

Overview

The Cards are 1-2 in their first three contests of 2011. In each of the last two weeks, they appeared to have a tough road win within their reach but let each slip away with a late fourth quarter turnover. Last week in Seattle, it was a 13-10 loss to the Seahawks that spoiled a defensive effort that limited Seattle to 261 yards of total offense and produced four sacks and constant pressure on QB Tarvaris Jackson. Arizona’s lone TD came on a spectacular leaping grab by WR Larry Fitzgerald between two defenders that established a new franchise record in that category. Four Cardinals drives that penetrated Seattle territory ended without points – two culminating with INTs and another two on missed FGs (49 & 51 yards).

Cards Battening Down Hatches for Giants’ Pass Rush

Link Recommended by John Fennelly on September 29th, 2011 at 10:37 pm

The Arizona Cardinals’ offensive line will have their hands full with the Giants’ pass rush this Sunday, especially if DE Osi Umenyiora is cleared to play.

“It’s been one of their things that has made them a good, consistent football team for a number of years,” Cardinals coach Ken Whisenhunt said. “You have to make sure that you really are buttoned up in your protections and do a good job of mixing your passes, so you can get something out quick to compensate for that.”

Fired-up Rolle: “I’m No Pushover”

by John Fennelly on September 28th, 2011 at 6:00 am

Giants’ safety Antrel Rolle drew some heat from critics after he drew a senseless personal foul in Sunday’s game by tearing off the helmet of Eagles’ TE Brent Celek.

“I just had to let them know that I am not a pushover, I am not a punk under any means and sometimes you have to put your foot down,” Rolle said. “It is more of a mental toughness and more of an attitude than anything sometimes.”

OK. We get it. Good thing his manning-up didn’t cost the Giants a game. That being said, the Giants will be going to Arizona this week, where Rolle spent the first five seasons of his career. He vowed not to let his emotions spill over onto the field:

“There’s going to be extra special … you definitely want to go in and give them a show,” Rolle said. “But I am not going to let any emotions take me out of the game or make me even more exhausted than I already will be.”

Giants Wisely Pass On Leinart

by John Fennelly on September 1st, 2010 at 3:06 pm

They Don’t Need Another Project, They Need A Veteran

According to sources the Arizona Cardinals did contact the New York Giants regarding the services of one Matt Leinart.  The Giants are obviously not interested in trading for Leinart, who is expected by many to be cut by Arizona on Saturday.

Even as a free agent, Leinart is not an attractive choice. The Giants have their young project in Rhett Bomar, they don’t need another one.  They need a veteran backup.

Leinart Rumors Are Just That – Rumors

by John Fennelly on September 1st, 2010 at 11:51 am

Being around the Giants for bit, now, I can tell you this…..they do not want players of questionable character anymore.  That is what Matt Leinart, former Heisman Trophy winner-turned-terrible-NFL quarterback, is.

The Giants have no reason to even consider Leinart for their roster.  Personally, I would rather have Rhett Bomar remain the backup than bring in this guy.  In fact, Bomar is a better player right now than Leinart is.

Leinart is a turnover machine who is just days away from a visit from the Turk.  The Cardinals probably plan on cutting him Saturday. They have Derek Anderson and John Skelton, who are both muuuuuch better prospects.  That is why they are dangling Leinart out there right now, hoping some sucker will make a deal for him.

Jerry Reese is smarter than that.  As Paul Schwartz of the Post tweeted this morning …“Matt Leinart to Giants? Forget it. Not gonna happen. “Discussions” were probably Cardinals calling Giants and Giants saying “No thanks.”

Saturday News and Notes

by John Fennelly on October 24th, 2009 at 12:33 pm

Hixon Thriving In Returner Role

It was no mystery this summer that the Giants were hoping that one of their young receivers would elevate their game and crack the starting lineup.  With Mario Manningham and Hakeem Nicks both producing, the Giants were able to re-slot Domenik Hixon back into the role of primary kick and punt returner.

Hixon is clearly the best man for the job and the Giants are a better team when Hixon is returning kickoffs and punts.  Last week, Hixon racked up 281 yards on 7 kick returns and two punt returns.  His 32.9 average on kick returns is second in the NFL behind Chicago’s explosive rookie, Johnny Knox.

Sackless in Secaucus

Even after the pasting the Giants took last week in the Big Easy, the defense remains the top ranked in the league. But us Giants affectionados know they can play much better going forward.

The Giants’ heralded trio of DEs – Justin Tuck, Osi Umenyiora and Mathias Kiwanuka have a combined total of nine sacks in the first six games.  I don’t need to tell you that those numbers are way below expectations thus far.

Opponents have done a good job neutralizing the Giants’ standard pass rush, but after last Sunday the Giants are looking to change a few things around.

This week, DC Bill Sheridan told reporters on Friday that he anticipates that teams will continue to max protect against them, which will open up some blitzing opportunities.  So far the Giants have shied away from blitzes, but Sheridan is putting all options on the table in order to optimize the performance of his talented defense.

Reporter: You said definitively you kind of wanted to ramp up the blitz. Just curious, then why in the past few games why did you keep it at the level – just because everything was working and you didn’t need to blitz more? Or what is the reason for kind of a change now?

Sheridan: Really, the answer is yes, because we were handling the other people. So we pressured in the previous games but we were up. Our base calls were successful. When you think of the last three games I thought we played well on defense. Things were going well. And we pressured intermittently and we pressured on third down, which everybody does. But our base defense on first and second down was more than adequate — since the Dallas game we had played well. So to answer you question, yes. Things were going well; we were playing good defense. But obviously they found a way to attack us and like I say, to throw the ball on us on every single down. And so we don’t want to let that happen and we will be prepared as we go forward.

Source: Edwards and Boldin Won’t Be Giants

by Anthony De Rosa on April 23rd, 2009 at 4:08 pm

A source close to the Giants reports that the Giants have decided the price for Braylon Edwards is too high and they will not be making a trade for him. The source also said the talks for Anquan Boldin are dead as well. The Giants will look for a receiver in the draft instead.

The Browns, according to sources, want at least a first- and a third-round pick for Edwards and possibly Mathias Kiwanuka The Giants haven’t offered anything more than the second- and fifth-round picks they got in the Jeremy Shockey trade. The Giants seemed unwilling to trade Kiwanuka when that report originally surfaced.

The Arizona Cardinals say they have yet to receive an offer for Anquan Boldin from anyone.

The Giants could be looking at several wide receivers that may be available to them at the draft. Among them are Rutgers’ Kenny Britt, North Carolina’s Hakeem Nicks, Maryland’s Darrius Heyward-Bey, and Ohio State’s Brian Robiskie.

Ralph Vacchiano appeared on SNY’s Daily News Live this afternoon and reminds folks that shortly before the 2004 draft many folks were saying that the deal between the Giants and the Chargers for Eli Manning was dead as well.

Vacchiano sees Hakeem Nicks as a likely pick for the Giants in the draft.

I’m not certain this is etched in stone. We have seen this kind of subterfuge and misinformation strategically placed before. We will know soon enough.

Ocho Off The Block, No Offers Yet For Boldin

by Anthony De Rosa on April 22nd, 2009 at 11:19 am

Ralph Vacchiano on his blog for the New York Daily News reports that it looks less and less likely that Anquan Boldin or Chad Johnson will be moved.

Bengals coach Marvin Lewis said yesterday that they’re not trading Ocho Cinco.

“I don’t know why people continue with the speculation of moving Chad,” Lewis said. “Many times we’ve reiterated … I don’t know if we’re keeping count on this … Chad’s not getting moved.”

Cardinals GM Rod Graves said they have received no offers for Boldin since they announced they were willing to listen.

“Quite a few teams have called but we have no offers. I don’t know if that’s any indication of the way the rest of the league sees Anquan, I just think that there is time between now and draft day. Many teams have been finishing up the draft boards.”

Gil Brandt, Vacchiano’s Sirius NFL Radio co-host, said in an online chat today that there is a “100 percent” chance that Braylon Edwards will be dealt by draft day.
