The Giants announced their 2011 roster yesterday. It is full of great stories and perhaps great players, too. They have ten rookies on the team – mainly to bolster the speed of their special teams – and go into the 2011 season with a fresh approach and a better chance to compete for the NFC Playoffs than most prognosticators give them.
Mark Herzlich, a cancer survivor and an undrafted free agent, made the club. He is one of four rookie linebackers on the 53-man roster. Two late-round draft choices – Jacquian Williams and Greg Jones – and another UDFA (Spencer Paysinger) are the others.
“Herzlich didn’t bat an eye the whole camp,” said head coach Tom Coughlin. “Physically, he did everything you asked and more. I saw him improve literally week by week. He can play multiple positions. He’s very smart. He does an outstanding job on special teams. He’s told one time and he goes and does it. He deserves it.”

Here’s one way to keep busy this weekend as we await Hurricane Irene. What better way to spend your time indoors than to take a look back at all 25 of Eli Manning‘s interceptions from 2010?
Actually, this is not to celebrate the turnovers. It’s for you to take a look at the tipped passes – as well as the bad throws – that contributed to the high number of interceptions Manning threw last season. (This is actually part of my ongoing defense of the Giants’ QB.)
Anyway, if you choose to relive these less-than-memorable moments, they’re here.

I hate to say it but, this season is beginning to remind me of the 2009 season when Jerry Reese went into camp with only 3 safeties. Kenny Philips went down with a serious knee injury which forced Mr. Reese to scramble for players.
He signed C. C. Brown and Aaron Rouse. That was a painful season and a painful lesson to learn. The next year(2010) Reese brought in Antrel Rolle and Deon Grant.
Tight Ends with NFL experience are always a plus for a successful season. The Giants are a bit thin in the tight end department with Ben Patrick(FA from Arizona) retiring and the loss of Kevin Boss. I would guess the Giants brass are burning up the phone lines looking for someone that can block and catch.
So the question is…with the recent trade of Greg Olsen, the #1 draft pick for the Bears in 2007 to the Carolina Panthers does Jeremy Shockey become expendable. Shockey’s deal is worth up to $4 million, with $1 million in guaranteed money.
Love him or hate him he’s an up grade over what is in camp now. If he became available would the Giants bring him back? Just a question to consider at 2:40am.
In one scenario he is a huge distraction and Eli can’t work with him.
In a second scenario Eli thrives knowing that this is his team and he can control Shockey much better than before.

In 2010 The New York Giants went 10 & 6 and missed the playoffs for the second year in a row. They were embarrassed at home against the Tennessee Titans, lost for the fifth straight time against a not as talented Philadelphia Eagle squad, only to suffer the largest collapse in team history against the same team 4 weeks later.
The once mighty NY Giants defense allowed 347 points ranking them 17th in this category. The fans waited and held their breath for 137 plus days for their beloved New York Giants to take the field after the lock out.

Rich Eisen and Warren Sapp of the NFL Network were joined by Indianapolis Colts center Jeff Saturday yesterday to talk…football! How novel.
The three broke down the Giants’ current state of affairs, mostly attacking the low-hanging fruit: turnovers, collapses, meltdowns, etc etc etc…..Saturday scoffed at Tom Coughlin’s suggestion that Eli Manning take more sacks. He called it “ridiculous”. He’s right.

Giants’ Head Coach Tom Coughlin is in New Orleans this week attending the annual NFL Meetings. He held court at the coaches’ breakfast Tuesday morning and was quite frank about his understanding, yet disdain for his team’s inexplicable penchant for turnovers and late season collapses.
from James Varney of The Times-Picayune…
“Yes, there’s some bad decisions,” he said regarding Eli Manning‘s high turnover rate. “At the beginning of the year last year we probably had, conservatively, four, five six tipped ball interceptions. I mean, guys who got their hands on balls and guys who are exceptional receivers. We all know you throw the ball over the middle and it gets tipped it’s going the other way.
“There’s areas where we’ve all got go get better,” Coughlin said. “There were times we didn’t run the ball the way we say we can run the ball or want to run the ball. So I’m just saying there’s a lot of areas that need to be improved. And we had 17 fumbles, too! The first guy in this league he doesn’t even go for the tackle anymore, he goes for the fumble and guys are doing a great job at that. We’ve got to take care of the ball better.”
“Number one thing from our season is we told our players all along we cannot leave this in someone else’s hands, that never works out for you,” Coughlin said. “You take care of your own business. We had opportunities and we didn’t get it done. We won 10 games and we didn’t get in the playoffs. We felt like we should have but we left it up to someone else. Green Bay won and then went on and wins the whole thing. So that’s the number one thing, but we have to finish better.

I’ll make this simple. The Giants have as good a team as any in this league. Their worst enemy is themselves.
They can get back to the Super Bowl if they take these corrective steps. But first, some cold, hard facts.

Since the Giants’ season ended last month, I’ve read and heard countless solutions to the Giants problems and what they need to do to get back to the playoffs. I will address that in the coming weeks, but first we need to look at where they stand right now….
Not making the playoffs in a season where a team with a losing record qualified is disappointing. It is no solace finishing 10-6, either. It actually can work against you. What it tells you is that you blew opportunities. As we know, that is the story of the 2010 Giants.
