Super Bowl XXI Champs to Be Honored Monday Night

by John Fennelly on September 17th, 2011 at 9:29 am

For those of you who remember the greatest team in franchise history, this celebration is for you. From the Giants Communications Dept:

This season marks the 25th anniversary of the Giants first Super Bowl victory. The team will be honored with a special halftime ceremony at Monday night’s game. Fans can also relive and celebrate the unforgettable year throughout the season. The Giants have produced and will host a series of events, activities, memorabilia and programming, commemorating the 1986 Super Bowl winning team.

Members of the Giants 1986 Super Bowl team will sign autographs for fans prior to Monday night’s contest against the St. Louis Rams at MetLife Stadium, the team announced today. The autograph session will take place from 7:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. and will be located at the stadium’s four main entrances: MetLife, Verizon, Budweiser, and Pepsi Gates. All fans in line will receive a commemorative 25th anniversary 5”x7” autograph card.

The Giants encourage fans to arrive early and be patient about entering the stadium on Monday night. The enhanced security procedures at the stadium gates recommended by the NFL will increase the comfort and safety of fans at the game, but will require some additional time for inspections at the gates. Fans are asked to come early, enjoy the best tailgating tradition in the NFL, and take advantage of the video boards and other new amenities outside MetLife Stadium.

In order to accommodate this security enhancement, guests are asked to arrive earlier than normal to avoid longer security lines at the checkpoints. Guests may refuse inspections; however, stadium management reserves the right to refuse entry.

25TH Anniversary of SB XXI a Huge Smash

by John Fennelly on June 15th, 2011 at 6:41 am

Sunday’s 25th Anniversary of the Giants Super Bowl XXI victory was such a rush for those who attended, it was almost like reliving the game a second time (video below).

Bill Parcells was extremely emotional over the reunion, his voice was barely audible during his media session. Old feelings came rushing back as he entered the media room backstage, even embracing long-time Giants beat writer Vinny DiTrani as if he were a long, lost brother.

“As Harry (Carson) said, ‘We’re all each other’s guys’” Parcells stated in a wistful manner. Phil Simms did not get emotional during his session, but did admit it brought back some fond memories, saying not much changed over the years. The bond between the group was as strong as ever.

Simms did tell me the story of how he ended up with the No. 11. When he came to the team in 1979, he wanted No. 12 which was owned by a backup QB by the name of Jerry Golsteyn. Golsteyn would not give Simms the number, so he took No 11 instead. Golsteyn was gone the next season, but Simms did not make the switch, and Scott Brunner grabbed the number.

After that, it made no sense to make a change…..

Simms on Parcells, LT and the ’86 Giants

by John Fennelly on June 14th, 2011 at 2:19 am

Former Giants QB and CBS game analyst Phil Simms held court backstage before Sunday’s 25th Anniversary celebration commemorating the team’s Super Bowl XXI victory over Denver.

Simms was the MVP of that game, going 22-for-25 passing with 3 TDs and was the first player to utter the phrase “I’m going to Disneyland (World)”.

After this session I spoke with Simms about that picture-perfect day and his near-perfect game:

JF: I was standing in the end zone when you guys came out to warm up that day. I said to the group I was with – ‘Wow, Simms has some extra zip on the ball today’

Simms: Who, me? I really didn’t think that at the time.

JF: Well, we thought so. And then all game long people were saying ‘Imagine if Simms played in warm weather all the time.’

Simms: Oh yeah, that. Sure.  Hey, you know what, I remember a game in Miami. It was raining, even.  I threw a pass and then stood there and watched it.  I said, ‘Heck, this is easy. Anyone can do this..’

The man underestimates his career. Simms was relegated to handing off most Sundays. In my book, he was every bit as good as his contemporaries, many who are Canton now. He just wasn’t given the chance.

The Parcells Giants were a run-first team. A smashmouth team. Simms was his guy, even though they clashed often and Simms hated playing for him – until it was all over.

When Parcells left in 1991, Simms said he was not sorry to see him go. “It was the first time I took a deep breath in eight years.” But he also said the reason the Giants were great was because Parcells applied the pressure non-stop.

Here’s our guerilla video shot with my trusty iPhone….

Low-Key Bavaro Left High-Level Impact on Giants

by John Fennelly on June 13th, 2011 at 4:31 am

He was the quiet one. The one that teams feared.

Bill Parcells once said of him: “He’s a stone face, that Bavaro. I’d hate to have to fight that son-of-a-blank (sic).”

Today, former Giants’ All-Pro TE Mark Bavaro is decades away from the folk hero the Giants faithful aptly nicknamed “Rambo”. He is as soft-spoken and humble as ever, but anyone who ever saw him play knows he was the toughest of the tough.

Bavaro’s signature moment as a Giant came during the 1986 season vs the 49ers on Monday Night Football. Bavaro caught a Phil Simms delivery over the middle at Candlestick Park and dragged seven 49ers – including Hall of Fame safety Ronnie Lott – some 20-odd yards, a key play that would spark a Giants’ comeback victory and set them on a Super Bowl run.

McConkey Still Has Championship Spirit

by John Fennelly on June 12th, 2011 at 2:34 pm

If you’re a Giant fan, you have to love Phil McConkey.

The former Navy helicopter pilot exemplified the spirit of the Giants in 1986.  McConkey was cut by the Giants before that season, but was re-acquired by the club to bolster its sagging special teams play.  He did that, and more.

McConkey was the lovable underdog, the guy you had to root for.  Today, at the Giants’ anniversary event, he was as loquatious, passionate and poignant as ever.

In comparing the ’86 Giants to the Navy he said both outfits were similarly focused. “It was always about the mission.”

Lawrence Taylor was the team’s greatest player, but McConkey was it’s heart. When asked about Taylor, Phil had this to say:

“I don’t know LT, I just know Lawrence….he was a great teammate.”

Martin Talks Retired Players Rights; ’86 Giants

by John Fennelly on June 12th, 2011 at 1:57 pm

Former Giants DE and Ring of Honor inductee George Martin was a key figure on the team’s 1986 Super Bowl championship roster.  He was front and center during the pre-ceremony media session at today’s 25th reunion event at the Meadowlands Expo Center in Secaucus.

Martin played his entire 14-year career with the Giants (1975-88) and is most remembered for two plays involving Broncos’ QB John Elway that occurred during the 1986 season.

The first was in a regular season game vs Denver at the Meadowlands. Martin jumped up to block an Elway pass, but ended up intercepting it and rambling 78 yards for a TD.  The second was a half-sack of Elway in Super Bowl XXI that resulted in a safety.
