Saturday Morning News: For the Love of Tom

by John Fennelly on January 28th, 2012 at 7:05 am

Another day in the life of these Giants, who have been living in the spotlight for months now. What’s going to happen when this is all over? There has been so much excitement this season, it is hard to imagine that any season going forward will be able to match it.

The team has caught the imagination of the entire cognizant world, and then some. The media, who traditionally swarm in during Super Bowl week, has two turnkey markets to work with this year in New York and Boston. They will all converge on Indianapolis – a town known mainly for auto-racing and basketball until Peyton Manning arrived – beginning tomorrow in what promises to be the NFL’s most celebrated rave to date.

Tom Coughlin was asked how his team was handling the extra attention….

“From the response I’ve gotten from some people that have been very honest with us about that, I think they’ve done well….We’re trying to keep all things in perspective, not get the cart before the horse. I think they’re doing a pretty good job of that. Just the turnout, in terms of the number of people from the media, makes it very difficult for them to realize it’s work days. But these are work days for us and we have to get our work done.”

Coughlin was put in an unusual spot yesterday during his presser when a reporter asked him to comment on players calling him “loving” and “caring”…

“I can be that way,” he responded with a smile.

“What I’ve learned from him for being around him for seven years is when he’s all about football, he’s all about football, but there’s more than that side to him,” said DE Justin Tuck of Coughlin. “I think you have to pay attention to or realize that and maybe go through some things in life to realize that. Me going through the stuff that I went through this year, I realized that again. But he’s more than a football coach. He’s a mentor. He’s more of a father-figure at times – my hats off to him for that.”
